Choose preserved or living moss first
Decide what you want the wall to do before buying materials. Preserved moss is the practical choice for a framed decorative panel; living moss is a planting project that needs suitable conditions over time.

Care directions for preserved moss are not uniform across suppliers. BEMOSS recommends 40%–60% indoor humidity for its stabilized products, cautions against water and misting, and says direct sunlight can fade pigment (BEMOSS FAQ). MOSSwall also says not to water or trim its preserved moss, but gives different advice about direct sun filtered through window glass (MOSSwall installation FAQs). Use the care sheet for the moss you buy rather than combining different suppliers’ directions into a universal rule.

Gather materials for a framed preserved moss panel
- A frame or stable backing panel, such as wood. Installation guidance also describes foam, fabric, plywood, or MDF as possible substrates; choose one suited to your panel and mounting plan.
- Preserved moss intended for decorative use. It may help to combine varieties with different textures.
- An adhesive labeled as compatible with your moss and backing. Craft adhesive spray and tacky glue are used in one product-specific project, but that does not establish a universal adhesive choice (Aleene’s preserved moss wall art project).
- Optional accents such as driftwood, cork, preserved flowers, or other botanical elements.
- Scissors and tweezers for trimming and positioning material.
A beginner tutorial from Terrart NYC describes this general set of materials and recommends arranging the composition before attaching it (Terrart NYC’s beginner’s guide).
Make the moss wall step by step
- Measure and choose the location. Decide the panel size and where it will hang. Consider whether the location suits the care instructions for your moss and whether the wall and mounting hardware can support the finished piece.
- Prepare the backing. Place the backing into the frame, or prepare a stable panel that can be framed or mounted. Make sure the surface is appropriate for the adhesive you plan to use.
- Arrange the design without glue. Lay out the moss and accents first. Start with larger areas, then add contrasting textures and decorative pieces. Photograph the arrangement if you want a reference while attaching it.
- Attach the moss in small sections. Apply adhesive according to its label, working a section at a time so you can keep the planned layout. Follow the product’s instructions for ventilation, application, material compatibility, and drying time; no single adhesive is established as best for every moss and backing combination.
- Let the panel dry fully. Use the adhesive label’s drying guidance before moving or mounting the piece.
- Mount it for its actual weight. Use hardware appropriate for the panel, frame, and wall. For a large or heavy piece, choose a mounting method rated for the finished load rather than relying on a general hardware recommendation.
Terrart NYC’s tutorial describes arranging moss, adding accents, securing the design, and allowing it to dry. A separate installation article discusses substrate preparation, framing, and mounting, but does not provide a general wall-anchor rating (Kerala Karshakan e-journal, “Steps to install moss wall”).

Care for the finished panel
Keep preserved moss dry: do not water or mist it. Check the supplier’s instructions for its particular humidity and light recommendations, because guidance differs by product. BEMOSS warns that direct sunlight can fade pigment, while MOSSwall gives distinct advice about sunlight filtered through window glass (BEMOSS FAQ; MOSSwall installation FAQs).

Do not treat a living installation as a preserved panel with different moss. Plan for light, moisture, humidity, drainage, and airflow before mounting it; depending on the design, it may require a watering or misting system. Hot glue is not suitable for live moss, according to the installation guidance from Kerala Karshakan and MossLab (Kerala Karshakan e-journal installation article; MossLab indoor moss wall installation article).
