Adobe Illustrator does not have a dedicated “double-sided document” mode. The reliable method is to create two same-sized artboards—one for the front and one for the back—then save them as pages in a single PDF. Duplex printing is configured afterward in Acrobat or your printer driver.
The basic setup: two artboards
Use two artboards for a business card, flyer, postcard, invitation, brochure cover, or any other flat piece with artwork on both sides. Illustrator treats each artboard as a printable region, and multiple artboards can become separate pages in a multi-page PDF. See Adobe’s artboard documentation.

Create both artboards in a new file
- Choose File > New.
- Enter the final trim width and height, using inches or millimeters as appropriate.
- Set the number of artboards to 2, if that option appears in your version of Illustrator.
- Create the document and open Window > Artboards to confirm that both artboards exist.
Add the second artboard later
- Open Window > Artboards.
- Select the original artboard.
- Click New Artboard, or select the Artboard tool and draw a second artboard.
- Set its width, height, and orientation to exactly match the first artboard.
- Place it beside the first artboard for easier editing.
- Rename the artboards Front and Back.
Duplicating the original artboard is often the safest way to preserve identical dimensions. Illustrator documents this option in its guide to duplicating artboards.
Check the artboard order
The visual arrangement on Illustrator’s canvas is not enough to guarantee the final page order. In most workflows, the first artboard becomes PDF page 1 and the second becomes PDF page 2, but you should verify the order before sending the file.

- Open Window > Artboards.
- Confirm that the order is Front, then Back.
- Drag the artboards into the correct order if necessary.
- Export the PDF and check its page thumbnails in a PDF viewer.
Naming the artboards helps you work safely, but the artboard order controls the PDF sequence. A two-page PDF should contain the front on page 1 and the back on page 2 unless your printer specifies another arrangement.
Design the front and back correctly
Keep each side’s artwork inside its own artboard. The gray canvas around an artboard is not part of the exported page, so artwork sitting outside an artboard should not be relied on for the printed design.

Trim, bleed, safe area, and printer margins
- Trim size: the final size after cutting.
- Bleed: extra artwork extending beyond the trim edge when a design runs to the edge.
- Safe area: the interior area where important text and logos should remain.
- Printer margin: the area a desktop printer may be unable to print.
Use identical artboard dimensions for both sides unless the print provider explicitly requests a different setup. Add bleed only when the design reaches the edge and follow the printer’s required amount. Do not make the back a different size simply because the sheet will be flipped.
For desktop printing, page size and the imageable area can vary by printer and driver. Adobe explains these page and orientation considerations in its guide to changing page size and orientation.
Do not place the front and back side by side on one oversized artboard unless a printer specifically asks for a spread or imposed layout. Two artboards make the page structure and PDF export much less ambiguous.

Export both sides as one PDF
Preferred method: Save As PDF
- Choose File > Save As.
- Select Adobe PDF (*.PDF) as the format.
- Click Save.
- Choose the PDF preset required by your printer.
- In the PDF options, include all artboards rather than exporting only the active artboard.
- Set bleed and printer marks only according to the printer’s specifications.
- Save the PDF.
Adobe’s PDF creation instructions use File > Save As, the Adobe PDF format, and the Adobe PDF options dialog. Dialog labels can vary slightly between Illustrator releases, so look for the option that includes the artboards or creates a multi-page PDF.
Alternative: Export As PDF
- Choose File > Export > Export As.
- Select Adobe PDF (*.PDF).
- Enable the artboard or multi-page option when it is available.
- Export the file.
Open the finished PDF and confirm that it has exactly two pages. If it has one page, return to Illustrator and check the Artboards panel and the artboard-selection controls in the export dialog.
Choose the preset your printer requests
There is no single universally correct PDF preset. Depending on the job, a printer may request Press Quality, High Quality Print, a particular PDF/X standard, or a supplied preset. Choose the print provider’s specification rather than assuming the most professional-sounding option is always best.
Ask the printer for its requirements for:
- PDF/X version, if applicable;
- bleed amount;
- crop and other printer marks;
- color profile;
- image resolution;
- whether marks should be included; and
- whether both sides should be pages in one PDF or separate files.
Print the PDF double-sided
Creating a two-page PDF does not automatically tell a printer to put the pages on opposite sides of one sheet. That is the duplex, or two-sided, printing step.
Automatic duplex printing
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader or another PDF viewer.
- Choose File > Print.
- Select the physical printer, not a virtual PDF printer.
- Enable Print on both sides of paper.
- Choose the appropriate flip direction.
- Check the preview if one is available.
- Print one test sheet before producing the full run.
Adobe notes that duplex availability and the exact control depend on the printer driver. If Acrobat does not show the option, open Printer Properties or Printer Preferences from the print dialog. See Adobe’s guide to printing PDFs.

Long-edge versus short-edge flipping
- Flip on long edge: usually correct for a conventional portrait document that turns like a book.
- Flip on short edge: often correct when the sheet turns over the top, or when the page orientation requires that behavior.
Neither choice is universal. The correct setting depends on the physical way the finished item is meant to be read. Do not rotate the back artwork by 180 degrees as a default fix; test the printer setup first.
Use an orientation test
- Add a large temporary arrow near the top of each side, or mark the top edge of a scrap sheet.
- Print the front and back using the intended flip setting.
- Flip the sheet as it will be handled after printing.
- Check whether the back reads upright.
- If it is upside down, try the other flip edge or follow the print provider’s rotation instructions.
This one-sheet test is more dependable than guessing, especially because different printers feed paper in different directions.
If the printer has no automatic duplex mode
You can print the two pages manually, but do not rely on one universal reinsertion instruction. Printers vary in which side they print, which edge enters first, and whether the sheet is turned face up or face down.
- Mark an arrow and a small label on a scrap sheet.
- Print only PDF page 1.
- Observe how the printer returns or ejects the sheet.
- Reinsert the sheet according to the feed direction you recorded.
- Print only PDF page 2.
- Check whether the back is upright, correctly positioned, and on the intended side.
- Repeat the test with a different reinsertion direction if necessary.
Once the correct procedure is known, use the same orientation for the production batch. Manual duplexing can also introduce registration shifts, so inspect a physical proof before printing many copies.

- Choose File > Print.
- Select the physical printer.
- Choose all artboards or specify the artboard range.
- Set the output and print options.
- Use the printer driver’s duplex setting if the printer supports it.
Adobe documents printing all artboards as separate pages, printing a range, or ignoring artboards in its guide to setting up documents for printing.
A PDF-first workflow is usually safer when sending the job to a commercial printer, sharing it with another person, preserving page order, or checking the final pages in Acrobat. It also reduces surprises caused by different printer drivers.

The PDF has only one page
- Open Window > Artboards and confirm that two artboards exist.
- Check that both artboards were included during PDF export.
- Make sure the second design is inside the second artboard.
- Confirm that you exported the document rather than printing only the active artboard.
- Reopen the PDF and check its page count.
The back is upside down
Try the other long-edge or short-edge option, inspect the printer’s properties, and repeat the arrow test. Rotate the reverse artwork only when the printer’s required production orientation calls for it.
The two sides do not align
Check that the artboards have identical dimensions and that the print dialog is not using Fit to Page or another automatic scaling option. When the physical dimensions must remain exact, use 100% or Actual Size if appropriate for the printer workflow. Consumer printers may still have imperfect front-to-back registration.
Artwork is clipped
The artwork may extend beyond the printer’s imageable area, the media may be too small for the bleed and marks, or the selected page size may be wrong. Check the printer’s supported media size and printable area. Adobe notes that these limits can vary by printer and its driver or PPD.

The printer requests separate front and back files
Follow the printer’s request. Otherwise, a two-page PDF is typically the clearest delivery: page 1 is the front, page 2 is the back, both pages use the same trim dimensions, and both sides use consistent bleed settings. Do not add an extra instruction page unless requested.
The reverse side looks mirrored
Normal duplex printing does not require mirroring the back design. Mirroring is a special production requirement and should be done only when the printer or manufacturing process explicitly specifies it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When two artboards are not enough
Two artboards work well for a flat front-and-back piece, but a folded brochure is a different production problem. Folding may require panel imposition, page rotation, creep compensation, and a printer-specific template. Use the print provider’s dieline or template, or prepare the layout in InDesign or a dedicated prepress workflow when the printer requires it.
Separate Illustrator files can also be appropriate when a print provider asks for one file per side. Keeping both sides in one document is generally easier for matching size, bleed, and page order; separate files reduce the risk of exporting unrelated artboards but require more careful file management.
