In Canva, select the page or element you want to animate, choose Animate, then apply a preset effect or select Create an Animation to draw a custom motion path. Preview the result, adjust its timing, and export it as MP4 or GIF when that format is available.
The exact control names and panel locations can vary between Canva’s web editor, mobile app, design type, account, and interface version.
What can you animate in Canva?
Canva supports simple 2D motion and composited video for many common design projects. You can animate:
- Text and headlines
- Photos and product images
- Illustrations, shapes, stickers, characters, and logos
- Entire pages or presentation slides
- Video clips and backgrounds
- Social posts, invitations, announcements, explainers, presentations, reels, and GIF-style graphics
Canva is well suited to preset effects, moving text, slide transitions, and basic object movement. It is not a replacement for frame-by-frame character animation or advanced 3D motion-graphics software.

Element animation versus page animation
These are different operations:
- Element animation: Moves or changes one selected object, such as a title, photo, icon, or character.
- Page animation: Applies movement or a transition to an entire page or slide.
- Custom motion path: Records an element’s movement along a route that you draw by dragging it across the canvas.
- Video timeline motion: Controls when pages, clips, text, and other objects appear in a video sequence.
Canva’s presentation animation guidance distinguishes page animations from element animations. A live presentation’s on-click effect should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a timed MP4 animation.
How to create an animation in Canva
- Choose a design type. Select Video for reels, Shorts, ads, explainers, and multi-scene projects. Choose Presentation for animated slides, or a social-media design for a short animated post. Use custom dimensions when a platform requires a specific canvas size.
- Start with a template or blank design. Canva’s animation-maker workflow lets you begin with a video template, upload media, or create a project from scratch.
- Choose a background. Use a solid color, gradient, photo, video, branded background, or animated template. Keep it visually quiet when text or a product must remain readable.
- Add your objects. Use the Text, Elements, Uploads, Photos, Videos, and Apps panels. Keep independently moving items separate: for example, use separate elements for the headline, subtitle, logo, decorative shape, product, and call-to-action.
- Select an object or page. Click the object you want to move. To animate the complete slide, select the page or use the page-level animation control.
- Open Animate. Look for Animate in the editor toolbar. Canva’s animation-maker instructions identify Create an Animation as the custom-motion option.
- Choose a preset. Pick an entrance, emphasis, exit, movement, or text effect. Names and groupings can change, so use the visual preview rather than relying on a fixed list of labels.
- Adjust timing and sequence. Set how long each page remains visible and when individual objects appear. Stagger related elements rather than moving everything at once.
- Add finishing elements. Use transitions, captions, subtitles, music, narration, sound effects, filters, or other video effects where they support the message.
- Preview the complete design. Check the animation at normal playback speed, preferably on the device where it will be viewed.
- Download or share it. Choose an appropriate export format, present directly from Canva, share a link, or use a supported social-publishing option.
How to animate text in Canva
- Select the text box itself. If you are editing individual characters, exit text-editing mode first.
- Choose Animate.
- Apply a text effect such as a fade, pop, pan, or rise when appropriate.
- Choose Create an Animation if the text needs to travel along a specific route.
- Preview the result and leave the text on screen long enough to read.
Canva documents text presets and custom text movement on its text-animation page. Suitable designs may offer MP4 or GIF export.

How to create a custom motion path
- Select the element.
- Click Animate.
- Choose Create an Animation.
- Drag the element along the route you want it to follow.
- Release it to record the movement.
- Preview the result and simplify or redraw the path if it feels too fast, slow, sharp, or unnatural.
Custom paths work well for moving a ball in an arc, sliding a product onto the screen, sending a character across a scene, moving a logo into position, or directing an arrow toward a button. Keep the route inside the visible canvas unless leaving the frame is intentional.
How to animate an entire presentation
For a quick result, select a page and look for page-level animation or transition controls. Page animation is useful when an entire slide should fade or move into view, or when several presentation slides need consistent transitions.

Use element animation when a title, diagram, photo, or bullet point should appear independently. In presentation mode, on-click effects let you control audience pacing. For an exported video, test the result as a timed sequence instead of assuming live presentation behavior will transfer unchanged.
Canva also offers Magic Animate, an AI-assisted option that can suggest motion for a complete design or presentation. Canva identifies it as available in listed paid-plan categories, so availability can depend on the account and plan. Review its suggestions: automatically added movement may be excessive or poorly matched to the message.
Timing, audio, and transitions
There is no single correct duration for every Canva animation. Base timing on the content:
- Use a brief entrance for a simple headline.
- Give reading-heavy text enough time to be understood.
- Use slower movement for instructional content and faster cuts for energetic social content.
- Stagger objects to establish hierarchy instead of animating every item simultaneously.
- Synchronize changes with narration or music only when the timing improves comprehension.
Canva’s video tools include transitions, captions, stock media, audio, animated text, motion paths, and other effects; availability can vary by design and account. Its video-effects overview also describes Beat Sync and related editing features.

Choosing an export format

| GIF | Short, looping graphics where GIF is specifically supported and audio is unnecessary. |
| Share link | Collaboration, review, and distributing an editable or viewable Canva design. |
| Present | Live presentation playback with on-click pacing. |
MP4 is usually the more practical choice for full-motion content because it handles video and audio more efficiently than GIF. GIF may be available for suitable animated designs, but export options are not identical for every Canva design type.
To export, choose Download, select the available format, confirm which pages are included, and complete the download. Canva also supports presenting, sharing, and—where supported—publishing to social platforms. See its animated-video workflow for the current export paths.

- Is the text readable at normal playback speed?
- Do objects collide or obscure one another?
- Does anything leave the visible canvas unintentionally?
- Does every object appear at the intended moment?
- Are captions visible long enough?
- Is the music quieter than the narration?
- Does the animation still make sense without sound?
- Does the first frame work as a thumbnail?
- Does a loop begin and end smoothly?
Common Canva animation problems and fixes
“Animate” does not appear
- Confirm that an element or page is selected.
- Exit text-editing mode and select the text box.
- Check whether the object is locked.
- Try selecting an individual element instead of a group.
- Try a video or presentation design if the project needs a timed sequence.
- Check the web editor if the mobile app exposes fewer controls.
- Reload the design or update the app if the interface appears incomplete.
The animation is too fast or too slow
Review page duration and object timing, reduce simultaneous effects, and give reading-heavy text more time. Judge the result in normal playback rather than only while dragging through the editor.
The custom path looks unnatural
Redraw it with fewer turns, avoid sharp corners unless they are intentional, keep it inside the canvas, and preview after each revision.

An object disappears
The path may leave the canvas, the element may be behind another layer, its timing may not overlap the page duration, or an exit effect may remove it early. Also check whether it is hidden or partly off-canvas.
The downloaded file differs from the editor
Confirm the export format and included pages. Check premium assets, fonts, audio, and video elements, then test the file in another playback app. If the project is long, export a short test section before exporting the complete animation.

Canva offers a Free plan and markets basic animation creation through its free animation tools. That does not mean every template, stock asset, AI feature, background-removal tool, or advanced feature is free.
Canva’s U.S. pricing page displayed, in an August 16, 2026 snapshot, US$0 per year for Free, US$144 per year for one person on the displayed annual Pro plan, and US$250 per year per person for Business; Enterprise uses contact-sales pricing. Prices can vary by location, tax, billing method, promotions, and plan changes. Check the current pricing page before subscribing. Tips for better Canva animations
- Animate with a purpose: guide attention, explain a change, or improve pacing.
- Give each scene one primary focal point.
- Keep text large, high-contrast, and visible long enough to read.
- Use consistent movement across pages.
- Avoid dramatic transitions on every slide.
- Preview on a phone for mobile-first content.
- Test the design with sound off as well as on.
- Export a short test before committing to a long final download.
Desktop and mobile differences
The same basic sequence applies on both platforms: select an element or page, choose Animate, apply a preset or custom animation, preview, and export. However, toolbar placement, panel layout, and available controls can differ between Canva’s web editor, iPhone, Android, and tablet apps. Treat screenshots and labels as version-specific rather than universal.

How do I make a custom animation in Canva?

Should I download a Canva animation as MP4 or GIF?
Choose MP4 for videos with multiple scenes, audio, or more complex timing. GIF can suit a short, silent loop when the design supports GIF export.
Can I animate text in Canva?
Yes. Select the text box, choose Animate, and apply a text effect. Suitable designs may also allow a custom motion path and MP4 or GIF export.
Why can’t I see the Animate option?
