Photoshop’s Generative Fill and other Firefly-powered tools can fail for very different reasons: an unsupported document, missing account access, blocked Adobe services, GPU or memory problems, a damaged installation, or an Adobe-side issue. Start with the document and account checks before reinstalling Photoshop.
For the fastest diagnosis, test a small RGB, 8-bit image with an unlocked raster layer, while signed in to Creative Cloud and connected without a VPN or restrictive network filter.
Quick fixes to try first
- Update Photoshop and Creative Cloud Desktop, then restart the computer.
- Sign out of Creative Cloud and sign back in with the Adobe ID that owns the Photoshop plan.
- Check your generative-credit balance and plan permissions.
- Confirm the document is RGB Color and 8 Bits/Channel.
- Select an unlocked raster layer and make an active selection.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, restrictive firewall, or managed network filter.
- Try a small image on another network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Restart Photoshop and test again.
These steps separate the most common entitlement, document, connectivity, and installation problems without immediately making destructive changes.

Identify what “not working” means
The symptom usually points toward the correct branch:

Fix Generative Fill when it is greyed out or missing
Adobe identifies several basic requirements for Generative Fill: an RGB document, 8-bit color, an active selection, and an unlocked raster layer. Check these before troubleshooting your graphics card.
Use a compatible document
- Open the image.
- Choose Image > Mode > RGB Color.
- Choose Image > Mode > 8 Bits/Channel.
- Choose a selection tool and select the area to change.
- Select the layer containing the image pixels.
- Unlock the layer if it is locked.
- Open the Contextual Task Bar and choose Generative Fill.
Do not rasterize, flatten, or convert your only original layer without preserving it first. Duplicate the layer or save a copy of the document. Rasterizing a Smart Object, text layer, or vector shape can make the feature available, but it also reduces editability. For a 16-bit or 32-bit workflow, work on a duplicate converted to RGB/8-bit, then composite the generated result back into the higher-bit document if appropriate.
If the Contextual Task Bar is not visible, enable it from Window > Contextual Task Bar, where that menu is available in your Photoshop build.
For a Smart Object, preserve the original Smart Object and work on a duplicate or rasterized copy. Large panoramas and very high-resolution files should be tested with a smaller crop first.

Fix the “Check your internet connection” error
This message does not necessarily mean that your broadband connection is offline. Photoshop may be unable to authenticate your Adobe account, reach the generative service, or complete the request because of a VPN, proxy, firewall, endpoint-security tool, or managed school or company network.
- Quit Photoshop.
- Quit and relaunch Creative Cloud Desktop.
- Confirm that Creative Cloud is signed in to the correct Adobe ID.
- Sign out and back in if authentication appears stale.
- Disable a VPN temporarily for a controlled test.
- Check whether a proxy or firewall is blocking Adobe services.
- Retry using a phone hotspot or another trusted network.
If the hotspot works, the problem is probably in the original network path: router filtering, DNS resolution, proxy policy, VPN configuration, firewall rules, or corporate filtering. Ask an administrator to configure an approved Adobe exception rather than leaving security software disabled.

If the same failure occurs on multiple networks, documents, and devices, an account restriction, feature-specific bug, or Adobe service problem becomes more likely. That still does not prove a service outage; check Adobe’s current service information and report the exact error.
Changing DNS can sometimes help with name-resolution problems, but it will not repair an account entitlement, blocked service, or server-side failure. Adobe specifically recommends checking internet access, VPNs, and firewalls in its official troubleshooting guidance. Community reports of network changes helping are useful as anecdotal evidence, not as a universal fix.
Check your Adobe plan, credits, account, and country
You can be successfully signed in and still lack permission for a particular feature. Check the credit indicator or Account menu in Photoshop, then review your plan in your Adobe account.
Adobe distinguishes between standard and premium generative features. As of the plan information checked in August 2026, Creative Cloud Pro includes unlimited access to standard features such as Generative Fill and a monthly allocation for premium features. Some Photoshop Single App and Photography plans include a limited monthly allocation. Firefly plans also provide unlimited standard generations while using credits for premium features.

Depending on the plan and feature, it may affect access to a premium feature while standard features remain available. Adobe says paid-plan credits reset according to the plan’s billing or reset date. Review the current generative-credit FAQ, Photoshop credit documentation, and live Creative Cloud pricing rather than relying on old numbers.
Adobe also says Photoshop generative AI availability varies by country. Its troubleshooting page lists China, Russia, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria among locations where these features are unavailable, and notes that Enterprise and Education administrators may restrict access. Do not attempt to bypass geographic, organizational, or licensing restrictions with modified software.
A plan upgrade can solve an entitlement or credit limitation, but it cannot fix a blocked Adobe domain, bad GPU driver, corrupted preferences, or unsupported document.

Update Photoshop and Creative Cloud
Use Creative Cloud to check for updates, or choose Help > Updates where that command is available. Confirm the installed build under Help > About Photoshop. If Adobe Support asks for technical details, open Help > System Info and save the report.

Do not install an old version simply because an online guide mentions it.
If the problem began immediately after an update, record the exact version and test a previous supported version through Creative Cloud’s Other versions option, where available. Treat a rollback as a diagnostic step: older builds can lose support or compatibility.
Fix freezing, crashing, and local lag
Cloud generation and local Photoshop performance are related but not identical. Adobe’s online service handles the generative request, while Photoshop still prepares the document, handles selections, displays results, and performs GPU-accelerated interface work.
Check the GPU
- Choose Help > GPU Compatibility.
- Open Edit > Preferences > Performance on Windows, or Photoshop > Settings/Preferences > Performance on macOS.
- Check whether Use Graphics Processor is enabled.
- Update the driver directly from the GPU manufacturer.
- Restart Photoshop.
- If Photoshop crashes or shows artifacts, test with GPU acceleration disabled.
Disabling GPU acceleration can improve stability, but it may make zooming, panning, selections, Neural Filters, Object Selection, and other operations slower. A newer or more powerful GPU is not guaranteed to make the remote Generative Fill request faster; it can instead improve local responsiveness, document preparation, compatibility, and compositing.
On hybrid laptops with multiple GPUs, verify which GPU Photoshop reports and check for driver conflicts. If GPU mode changes local lag but not the time spent at “Generating,” the remaining delay is more likely network- or service-side.
Check RAM and the scratch disk
- Close other memory-heavy applications.
- Avoid testing with many huge documents open.
- Review Preferences/Settings > Performance.
- Keep substantial free space on the scratch disk.
- Use a fast internal SSD where possible.
- Watch for a Scratch disks are full warning.
Do not use one universal memory percentage for every computer. The appropriate setting depends on total RAM, document size, and the other applications you need to keep open. Adobe’s Photoshop 27.x requirements page, last updated June 9, 2026, lists 8 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended. For Windows, Adobe lists DirectX 12 feature level 12_0 or later and at least 1.5 GB of GPU memory, with 4 GB recommended for 4K displays and higher. Test whether the document is the problem
Create a controlled test instead of repeatedly retrying the original file:
- Create a new blank RGB/8-bit document.
- Open a small JPEG or PNG.
- Use a simple selection.
- Try a short prompt such as add a soft blue sky.
- Test the same feature on a duplicate of the original document.
- Works in the new document: the original file’s mode, layer type, selection, dimensions, corruption, or complexity is probably involved.
- Fails everywhere: account, service, network, installation, or system configuration is more likely.
- Only one tool fails: investigate that tool or model specifically rather than assuming all Photoshop AI is broken.
Measure where the delay occurs. Is Photoshop lagging before you click Generate? Does it happen only with large images? Does a small image work on a different network? Do all AI features fail, or only Remove Tool, Generative Upscale, Generate Background, or Generative Fill? These distinctions prevent you from replacing hardware when the actual problem is a document or service request.
Reset Photoshop preferences safely
Reset preferences after checking the document, account, network, GPU, memory, and scratch disk. A damaged preference can cause odd interface and performance behavior, but resetting it removes customization.
From Photoshop
- Open Preferences > General.
- Select Reset Preferences on Quit.
- Quit Photoshop and launch it again.
At launch
- Windows: hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift while launching Photoshop.
- macOS: hold Command + Option + Shift while launching Photoshop.
Confirm deletion of the settings file when prompted. Export or record important workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, tool presets, color settings, and performance preferences first. Adobe includes preference reset among its Generative AI troubleshooting steps.
When to reinstall Photoshop
Reinstalling is a later-stage repair, not the first response to a slow generation. Consider it when Photoshop still crashes or freezes after GPU and preference tests, the installation appears corrupted, the same feature fails in a clean document and eligible account, or Adobe Support recommends it.
- Save custom presets, actions, workspaces, and plug-in information.
- Confirm the problem is not limited to one document.
- Confirm Creative Cloud Desktop is working and signed in.
- Record the Photoshop version and system information.
- Reinstall through Creative Cloud.
- Restart the computer.
- Test Photoshop before restoring third-party plug-ins and custom settings.
Reinstallation will not solve a regional restriction, exhausted entitlement, blocked network, unsupported document, or Adobe service outage.

If the problem started after an update
Write down the exact Photoshop build, the affected tool, document type, and error text. Test the same operation in a new RGB/8-bit file and, if available, a previous supported Photoshop version. If the earlier build works, that is evidence of a possible update regression, not proof that every installation of the new build is faulty.

Adobe community reports have described false-looking connection errors and tool-specific slowness after updates. Treat those reports as anecdotal. Reproducible details are more useful than assuming that every “internet” error is caused by broadband or every slow tool requires a faster GPU.
What to send Adobe Support
Provide enough information for the problem to be reproduced:
- Photoshop version and build.
- Operating system and version.
- CPU, RAM, GPU, and graphics-driver version.
- The exact tool, model, and prompt.
- Document color mode, bit depth, dimensions, and layer type.
- Whether a new document works.
- Whether another network works.
- The exact error text and a screenshot.
- The report from Help > System Info.
Final decision tree
- Greyed out: verify RGB, 8-bit, active selection, unlocked raster layer, supported build, account, and region.
- Connection error: refresh Creative Cloud sign-in, test without VPN or proxy, check firewall and managed-network filtering, then try another network.
- Freeze or crash: check GPU Compatibility, update the driver, test GPU acceleration on and off, reduce memory pressure, reset preferences, and inspect plug-ins.
- Slow generation: determine whether the delay is local or server-side, test a small document, check network behavior, RAM, scratch space, and recent updates.
- Still broken everywhere: document the build and symptoms, check Adobe service status, and contact Adobe before buying hardware or reinstalling repeatedly.
FAQ
Why is Generative Fill greyed out in Photoshop?
Check that the document is RGB and 8-bit, that you have an active selection, and that the selected layer is an unlocked raster layer. Also confirm that your Photoshop build, Adobe account, and region support the feature.

Not necessarily. The generation request depends on Adobe’s online service and your network. A compatible GPU and current driver can improve local responsiveness and stability, but do not guarantee faster cloud generation.
Can running out of generative credits make Photoshop AI slow?
Credit limits affect access according to the plan and feature; they do not universally make every generation slower. Check your plan and credit balance in Photoshop and review Adobe’s current credit FAQ.
Should I reinstall Photoshop if Generative Fill is not working?
Not as a first step. Check the document, account, network, GPU, memory, and preferences first. Reinstall only if the installation appears corrupted or the feature still fails after those checks.
How can I tell whether the problem is my file or Adobe’s service?
Try a small image in a new RGB/8-bit document with a simple selection, then test on another trusted network. If the test document works, the original file may be involved; if failures persist across documents and networks, account, installation, or Adobe service issues become more likely.
