The quickest way to add a logo depends on your WordPress theme: classic themes usually use Appearance → Customize → Site Identity; block themes use Appearance → Editor and a Site Logo block; page builders and theme frameworks may control the logo from their own header template.
Before uploading anything, prepare more than one version. A painting business, for example, may need a horizontal logo for the desktop header, a compact mark for mobile, a square icon for browser tabs and social profiles, and a light version for dark backgrounds.
Logo and site icon are not the same thing
Your logo is the visible brand mark used in the header, footer, landing pages, invoices and marketing materials. Your site icon, also called a favicon, is the small square image shown in browser tabs, bookmarks and some mobile contexts.
A full wordmark usually becomes unreadable at favicon size. Use a simplified icon, monogram or paint-related mark instead of forcing a long business name into a tiny square.

What makes a good WordPress logo?
A practical website logo should be:
- Recognizable when displayed small.
- Legible without relying on fine detail.
- Distinct from competing businesses.
- Appropriate for your audience and industry.
- Usable in color, black and white, and reversed on a dark background.
- Available in horizontal, stacked and icon-only versions.
- Simple enough for a website header, social avatar, email signature and printed material.
Do not design only for a large desktop header. A logo that looks excellent at 400 pixels wide may collapse into an unreadable shape in a mobile navigation bar or browser tab.
| Use | Useful version |
|---|---|
| Desktop header | Horizontal symbol-and-wordmark version |
| Mobile header | Compact wordmark or icon-only mark |
| Site icon | Square, simplified icon |
| Social profile | Square or circular-friendly mark |
| Print and signage | Vector or high-resolution source |
| Dark header or hero image | Light or reversed version |
WordPress has no universal “correct” logo width. The active theme, header design, CSS and page builder determine the rendered size. For example, the Twenty Twenty-One documentation gives a theme-specific recommendation of at least 300 pixels wide or 100 pixels tall. That is not a rule for every WordPress site.
Prepare the right logo files
Keep the original editable design file, then export a small asset package:
- Primary horizontal logo: for the desktop header.
- Stacked or vertical logo: for narrow layouts, footers and selected marketing graphics.
- Icon-only mark: for the site icon, mobile use and avatars.
- Transparent PNG: for straightforward WordPress use over colored backgrounds.
- Vector source: preferably SVG for safe web workflows, plus PDF or EPS for print and future editing where available.
- Light/reversed version: for dark headers and image backgrounds.
- Monochrome version: for invoices, documents, stamps and low-color printing.
| Format | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Scalable web artwork | Upload and security support varies by site |
| PNG | Transparent web logo | Can become soft when enlarged |
| WebP | Web delivery where your workflow supports it | Should not be your only master asset |
| JPG | Logos that do not need transparency | No transparent background; compression can create artifacts |
| Print delivery and vector exchange | Not usually the preferred header upload | |
| EPS or AI | Editable design and print workflows | Requires compatible design software |
Do not use a JPG by default. If your logo should sit directly on a colored header, a JPG normally creates an unwanted rectangular background.
How large should the file be?
Export the artwork larger than its intended display size, then control its rendered width in WordPress or the theme. As practical starting points, export:
- Horizontal web logo: approximately 600–1,200 pixels wide.
- Compact logo: approximately 300–600 pixels wide.
- Site icon: square and at least 512 × 512 pixels.
These are production guidelines, not WordPress requirements. For a logo displayed at 250 CSS pixels on a high-density screen, a source around twice that width is often useful. Remove excessive transparent space around the artwork: otherwise the image may appear too small even when WordPress is using the expected width.
Choose how to create the logo
Design it yourself
DIY tools suit personal sites, new painting contractors, simple wordmarks and budget-conscious projects. Canva and Adobe Express both offer editable templates and free logo-making workflows. Adobe Express says its logo maker can export PNG, JPG and PDF files and describes a default square download of 500 × 500 pixels.

Templates are useful for exploring direction, but a template-based mark may look generic or resemble other local businesses. Check whether individual icons, fonts and other elements have the commercial-use rights you need.
Use an AI or automated logo maker
Automated tools can produce several starting concepts quickly and may generate coordinated brand assets. Looka, for example, separates one-time logo purchases from annual Brand Kit subscriptions and describes packages that may include PNG, EPS, SVG and PDF files.
Do not assume that an AI-generated design is unique, exclusive or automatically suitable for trademark registration. Before paying, check the rights for the logo, symbols, fonts and templates; confirm whether editing remains available; and find out whether the charge is one-time or recurring. Looka’s help page lists historical prices of $20 for a basic PNG package and $65 for a premium package, but that page is dated September 24, 2021, so do not treat those figures as current prices.
Hire a designer
A professional designer is usually the better choice for an established painting company, a competitive local market, custom lettering, distinctive illustration or a broader identity system. Ask for:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Transparent PNG exports.
- Horizontal, stacked, icon-only, light and dark versions.
- Font names and licensing information.
- RGB, HEX and CMYK color values, plus Pantone values where relevant.
- Written terms covering usage rights, ownership and any third-party assets.
A logo download is not automatically the same as copyright ownership, commercial permission, trademark exclusivity or the right to reuse every included element.
Create the logo systematically
1. Write a short design brief
Record your business name, optional tagline, three to five brand adjectives, preferred and prohibited colors, competitors to avoid imitating, and every place the logo will appear. For a painting business, consider whether the brand should feel residential, premium, traditional, eco-conscious or fast and practical. Decide whether the business name must remain readable in the mobile header.
2. Build for clarity before decoration
- Start with the name or core symbol.
- Choose type that remains legible when reduced.
- Use a restrained color palette.
- Remove unnecessary detail.
- Test the mark in one color.
- Test it without the tagline.
- Create the square icon version.
- Create a reversed version for dark backgrounds.
Check kerning, similar-looking letters, thin strokes, font licensing and accidental resemblance to another brand. Do not make color the only way the mark is recognizable; this helps with grayscale printing and different color-vision conditions.

Set the WordPress site icon
For WordPress 6.5 and later, the official route is:
- Prepare a simplified square image.
- Make it at least 512 × 512 pixels.
- Prefer PNG for a straightforward favicon workflow.
- Go to Settings → General.
- Choose the site icon and select or upload the image.
- Save the settings.
- Check a private window or another browser.
See WordPress’s site-icon documentation for the current requirements. The Site Logo block may also offer Use as site icon, but the visible logo and site icon often should be different assets. WordPress’s Learn WordPress lesson explains the distinction.
Accessibility, links and image metadata
Choose useful alternative text
- If the logo is the only linked route to the homepage, use the site or organization name as the alt text.
- If the logo is decorative and an adjacent site title communicates the same information, empty alt text may be appropriate.
- Do not insert keywords into logo alt text.
- Do not use a filename such as
final-logo-v7.png.
If important text appears inside the image, do not make the image the only place visitors can find the site name. Keep the name available in the page structure or accessible link name. WordPress’s Image block documentation covers image details such as alt text and available resolution choices.
Check contrast
Test the logo against every header state, including a transparent header over a hero image. Provide a dark logo for light backgrounds, a light logo for dark backgrounds and a monochrome fallback. A logo that is technically present but indistinguishable from its background is a functional failure.
Optimize the logo without blurring it
- Keep the editable or vector original outside the Media Library.
- Export a web-sized version rather than a huge print-resolution PNG.
- Remove unnecessary metadata.
- Use transparency only when needed.
- Check compression at the size visitors will see.
- Choose an appropriate Media Library resolution rather than always using Full Size.
SVG is scalable, but it is not automatically enabled or safe for every WordPress installation. Upload it only through a trusted, maintained and sanitized workflow that your site’s security policy permits. If WordPress rejects the file, use a transparent PNG rather than casually bypassing the restriction.
Keep a known-good original when optimizing SVGs. Aggressive optimization can remove a needed viewBox, break fonts, alter gradients or filters, remove metadata or create browser-rendering differences.

“I cannot find Site Identity”
Look for Appearance → Editor. Block themes may hide the Customizer because site editing is handled in the Site Editor. If neither route fits, inspect the theme’s header settings and any page-builder Theme Builder.

“The logo is blurry”
The file may be too small, overly compressed or being enlarged from a low-resolution responsive size. Upload a larger PNG, use a safely supported vector, remove transparent padding and check the selected image resolution.
“The logo is too large”
Set a numeric width in the Site Logo block or builder. Then check maximum-width and height rules, mobile-specific settings and transparent canvas space. Clear page, CDN and browser caches after saving.
“The logo has a white box”
You probably uploaded a JPG or a PNG exported without transparency. Export a transparent PNG, use a safely supported SVG or select the reversed logo for a dark background.
“It looks right in the editor but wrong on the live site”
Check whether the saved template was published, then clear the caching plugin, CDN and browser cache. Inspect separate desktop and mobile headers, theme-generated CSS, logged-in versus logged-out output, failed asset URLs and mixed-content errors.
“The site icon has not changed”
Favicons are cached aggressively. Test in a private window or another browser and clear site or CDN caches before concluding that the upload failed.
“WordPress refuses the SVG”
Do not bypass the restriction casually. Use a trusted sanitized workflow approved for your site, or upload a transparent PNG instead.
