What “Ghibli images” usually means
“Ghibli image” is not a precise technical image category. People often use the phrase to describe a combination of visual qualities associated with classic Japanese fantasy animation: hand-painted backgrounds, soft watercolor-like textures, expressive faces, rounded shapes, detailed plants, warm natural light, atmospheric depth, gentle humor, and a feeling of quiet storytelling.
You can ask an image generator for those descriptive qualities without requesting a direct copy. Avoid prompts such as “draw Totoro,” “recreate a scene from Spirited Away,” or “make this exact movie still in Ghibli style.” Instead, describe an original subject, setting, mood, color palette, and medium.

ChatGPT Images: best for a conversational workflow
In ChatGPT on the web or mobile app, ask it to create an image and describe the scene. You can then request targeted changes such as “make the sky less orange,” “move the bicycle farther left,” or “replace the background with a mossy forest.” You can also upload an image and ask for an original illustrated reinterpretation.
The main advantage is iteration: you can explain what is wrong in ordinary language instead of rebuilding the entire prompt. The main limitation is that free usage limits and image availability can change.
Microsoft Designer: best for quick social graphics
Designer is useful when the generated illustration needs to become a finished social post, card, banner, or wallpaper. Its workflow generally begins with an image-generation or design prompt, followed by editing tools for cropping, text, background removal, erasing, and upscaling. Interface labels may change, so look for the current Image Creator, Designer, or AI-image entry point in your Microsoft account.
Microsoft notes that text inside generated images may be inaccurate. It also says that AI-generated files include content credentials identifying their AI origin. Its consumer FAQ describes Designer as licensed for personal, non-commercial use with a Microsoft account, so do not assume that a free Designer image is automatically cleared for commercial merchandise or advertising. Check the current terms before selling or publishing commercially.

Canva: best for finishing the design
Canva is particularly convenient when the image is only one part of the final project. Generate an illustration through Magic Media or another available text-to-image app, place it on a Canva canvas, and then add typography, borders, frames, stickers, captions, or a layout.
Canva’s free access and generation quotas are not permanent guarantees. A feature may be available in one account or region and unavailable in another. Before using the output for paid work, review Canva’s current AI and content-licensing terms, especially if the design includes trademarks, recognizable people, or third-party source images.
Use this prompt formula
A reliable prompt normally contains eight parts:
- Subject: who or what appears in the image
- Action: what the subject is doing
- Setting: the location and important background details
- Mood: peaceful, playful, mysterious, nostalgic, or adventurous
- Visual medium: watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, ink, or hand-painted animation
- Lighting: soft afternoon sunlight, overcast morning, lantern light, or golden hour
- Composition: close-up, portrait, square, wide, centered, or cinematic perspective
- Color and constraints: palette, aspect ratio, and things to exclude
Use this structure:
[subject] + [action] + [setting] + [mood] + [visual medium] + [lighting] + [composition] + [color palette] + [constraints]Copy-ready original illustration prompt
Paste the following prompt into ChatGPT Images, Microsoft Designer, Canva, or another image generator, then replace the bracketed details:

For example:
Create an original, whimsical hand-painted animated-film illustration of a child riding a bicycle through a mossy rural village. Use expressive but original character design, soft watercolor and gouache textures, carefully painted natural backgrounds, rounded forms, subtle facial expressions, warm afternoon sunlight, gentle atmospheric perspective, and a cinematic wide composition. Use muted greens, sunflower yellow, terracotta, and sky blue. The mood is peaceful, curious, and nostalgic. Do not include existing movie characters, logos, film stills, text, or recognizable copyrighted designs.
Notice what the prompt does not do: it does not name a film, character, director, or studio. That gives the model useful visual direction while leaving room for an original result.

How to turn your own photo into an illustrated image
Use a photograph that you took yourself or that you have permission to edit. In ChatGPT, attach the image, describe the transformation, and state which parts should remain recognizable. Similar upload-and-edit workflows may be available in Designer and Canva, depending on the current account and feature.
Try this prompt:
Transform this photo into an original hand-painted animated illustration. Preserve the subject’s pose, approximate clothing colors, overall expression, and scene layout, but redesign the rendering with soft watercolor textures, lush background detail, warm natural light, gentle outlines, and an imaginative rural-fantasy atmosphere. Do not copy a named character, movie frame, logo, or exact studio style.

This approach works better than simply saying “make me Ghibli.” It tells the model what must stay consistent and what can be artistically reinterpreted. If the person is not you, obtain permission before uploading the photograph. Be particularly careful with photos of children, private individuals, or images obtained from social media.
Generate variations instead of settling for the first result
Image models are probabilistic: the same prompt can produce different compositions and mistakes. Make several versions, then choose the one with the strongest pose, facial expression, lighting, and background.
Use focused follow-up requests for specific problems:
- Bad anatomy: “Keep the composition, but correct the hands and make the bicycle frame structurally consistent.”
- Unwanted realism: “Use softer painted edges, simplified shapes, and more visible watercolor-and-gouache texture.”
- Weak background: “Add layered foliage, distant hills, a footpath, and atmospheric depth without distracting from the subject.”
- Wrong mood: “Make the lighting gentle and hopeful, with muted colors and a quieter expression.”
- Unwanted copying: “Redesign the character and architecture so they are clearly original; remove any recognizable film-specific details.”
Do not keep adding unrelated instructions to a broken prompt. A targeted edit usually produces a more predictable result than rewriting every detail at once.

Do not rely on AI to render important text
Generated lettering frequently contains misspellings, distorted characters, or invented words. If the image needs a title, name, date, quote, menu, or event information, generate the illustration without text and add the wording afterward in Canva, Microsoft Designer, a presentation app, or another editor.
This also gives you control over font size, contrast, alignment, accessibility, and spelling. It is especially important for invitations, posters, thumbnails, and business graphics.
Finish the image in a free editor
After choosing a result, make the output fit its purpose:

Useful finishing actions include cropping, adjusting brightness and contrast, removing a distracting object, erasing an unwanted background detail, adding a border, and placing text on a separate layer. Microsoft Designer documents cropping, text placement, background removal, erasing, and upscaling; Canva supports combining generated visuals with layouts, frames, stickers, and typography.
A mouse or touchscreen is enough for basic edits. If you want to manually paint masks, refine edges, or add human-authored details, an optional drawing tablet for digital art can make those tasks more comfortable, but it is not required to create an image for free.

Digital creation and physical printing are separate steps. If you want a postcard, wall print, or small art print, export the finished image at the highest suitable resolution, choose a print size that does not require extreme enlargement, and use matte or fine-art paper when you want less glare and a more painted appearance.
A photo printer for art prints can be useful for people who expect to print regularly, while a local print shop may be more economical for a one-off poster. Before ordering, inspect the image at full size and remember that AI-generated details that look acceptable on a phone may look soft or distorted on paper.
Copyright, trademarks, and responsible use
Studio Ghibli’s official website states that its works and related photographs, images, text, and other materials are generally reserved and may not be reproduced, transmitted, exhibited, exploited, or otherwise used without permission except where applicable law allows it. The studio has also warned about unauthorized commercial reproductions of film images and paintings.
That does not mean every image containing soft watercolor animation is automatically unlawful, nor does it mean that adding the words “inspired by” makes a copied image acceptable. The legal question can depend on the actual output, the prompt, source material, similarity, branding, intended use, jurisdiction, and platform rules. Copyright, trademark, unfair-competition, and publicity-rights issues may all matter.

For a cautious general-purpose workflow:
- Use an original subject and original character design.
- Describe visual attributes instead of naming a specific film or character.
- Do not upload film stills, official artwork, or another person’s photo without authorization.
- Do not include Studio Ghibli logos or imply that the studio endorsed, licensed, or created the image.
- Do not sell merchandise featuring recognizable copyrighted characters or film scenes unless you have permission or a legally supportable basis.
- Keep your own edits, layout work, painting, typography, and other human contributions.

The U.S. Copyright Office explains that copyright protects human creativity and that AI-generated material may need to be disclosed or excluded from a registration claim. Human-authored additions may be protectable even when purely AI-generated elements are not independently copyrightable. This is general information, not a legal determination about a particular image or jurisdiction.
Which tool should you choose?
- Choose ChatGPT Images if you want to upload a photo, explain revisions conversationally, or iterate on a scene.
- Choose Microsoft Designer if you want a simple browser workflow with quick cropping, background removal, erasing, and social-design tools.
- Choose Canva if the final result needs text, a layout, a presentation, invitation, thumbnail, or printable design.
- Consider a local or developer workflow only if you are comfortable downloading models, managing storage, using a capable computer, and checking the license for each model. AWS documentation describes text-to-image workflows using Stable Diffusion and breaks prompts into elements such as image type, subject, setting, and artistic category, but this is not usually the easiest no-cost route for a beginner.
A practical five-minute workflow
- Open ChatGPT Images, Microsoft Designer, or Canva and confirm what the current free account allows.
- Choose an original subject and setting.
- Describe the medium, lighting, composition, mood, and palette.
- Add a constraint excluding existing characters, logos, film stills, and text.
- Generate several variations.
- Choose the strongest composition and request one change at a time.
- Export the image, then add text and crop it in an editor.
- Before sharing or selling it, review the tool’s current terms and remove any third-party characters, logos, or unauthorized source material.
