You do not need a separate app to create and use a personal wallpaper on an iPhone or iPad. Apple’s built-in wallpaper tools can turn a photo, emoji pattern, color, or photo collection into a wallpaper, then let you customize the Lock Screen clock, widgets, controls, filters, and supported effects. For a collage, quote, pattern, or carefully arranged graphic, create the image in an editing app, save it to Photos, and import it through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper.
First, decide what you mean by “create”
There are three different ways to make a custom wallpaper:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Use an existing photo. This is the fastest option. Apple lets you crop, reposition, and zoom the image during setup.
- Design a new image. Use an editor to make a collage, quote card, illustration, color layout, or pattern, then save the finished file to Photos.
- Customize Apple’s wallpaper experience. Add Lock Screen widgets, change the clock, apply filters, use Photo Shuffle, connect a Lock Screen to a Focus, or add supported Live Photo and spatial effects.
Apple’s wallpaper editor is excellent for arranging a photo and customizing the Lock Screen, but it is not a full Photoshop-style design canvas. Use a separate editor when exact typography, layers, collage positioning, or a custom illustration matters.
The quickest way to use your own photo
On iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Photos, then choose the image.
- Pinch to zoom and drag the image until the subject is positioned correctly.
- Customize the Lock Screen clock, widgets, filters, and other available controls.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use the result on both screens, or tap Customize Home Screen to make a separate Home Screen design.
These labels come from Apple’s current iPhone wallpaper workflow; older iOS versions may show slightly different options. See Apple’s iPhone wallpaper guide.

- - 250+ HD/4K Wallpaper.
- - Set Images as wallpaper for you mobile phone screen easily.
- - Cool app wallpapers and simple to use it.
- - You can choose your custom image from you phone.
On iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos or another wallpaper category.
- Select the image and adjust its position.
- Customize the Lock Screen if the available controls appear.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
The iPad workflow is similar to the iPhone version, although available controls depend on the iPad model and iPadOS version. Apple’s current instructions are in its iPad wallpaper guide.
Apply a wallpaper directly from Photos
On supported current iPhone and iPad software, you can begin with the image instead of opening Settings:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Photos.
- Open the picture you want to use.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Use as Wallpaper.
- Adjust the photo and Lock Screen elements.
- Tap Add, then select a wallpaper-pair or separate Home Screen option.
If you do not see Use as Wallpaper, use Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper instead. Menu names and availability can vary by device and software version. Apple documents this Photos workflow for current software in its wallpaper guide.
Design a wallpaper from scratch
For a collage, quote, digital painting, pattern, or coordinated Lock Screen and Home Screen set, create the image in an editing or design app first.
- Open a design or image-editing app.
- Start with a high-resolution canvas in the same general orientation as the device.
- Add a background color, photograph, illustration, or texture.
- Place text, logos, faces, and other important details away from areas that will be covered.
- Export the result as a high-quality PNG or JPEG.
- Save or export the file to Photos.
- Apply it through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos.
Do not rely on one universal pixel size for every iPhone and iPad. Screen proportions, scaling, orientation, and cropping differ between models. A high-resolution image with the correct general orientation is safer than a fixed-size template, and Apple’s preview lets you make the final adjustment.
Keep the important parts inside the safe area
- Leave breathing room near the top center for the Lock Screen clock.
- Keep faces, logos, and headlines away from all edges.
- Do not place small text where Home Screen icons will cover it.
- Use strong contrast between text and its background.
- Make separate portrait and landscape versions when designing for an iPad.
- Preview the design on both the Lock Screen and Home Screen before committing to it.
A design that looks perfect as a flat image can become difficult to read once Apple adds the clock, widgets, controls, or app icons.

Customize the Lock Screen
After choosing an image, touch and hold the Lock Screen to open the wallpaper gallery, or create one from Settings > Wallpaper. Depending on the wallpaper, device, and operating system, you may be able to change:
- The clock font, color, and appearance.
- The clock size or height where supported.
- Lock Screen widgets.
- Lock Screen controls on supported software.
- Color filters and appearance variants.
- Photo zoom and positioning.
- Depth or multilayered effects for eligible photos.
- Focus links.
- Photo Shuffle frequency.
Not every control appears for every image. For example, a photo may support a depth-style treatment while a graphic or patterned wallpaper does not. Apple’s Lock Screen customization instructions describe the available editing areas.
Set a different Home Screen wallpaper
Set as Wallpaper Pair is the convenient option, but it initially uses the same wallpaper set for the Lock Screen and Home Screen. It does not prevent you from customizing the Home Screen afterward.
To use a different image or treatment:
- Finish customizing the Lock Screen and tap Add.
- Tap Customize Home Screen.
- Choose a color, a custom photo, or another available background option.
- Turn off Blur if you want the Home Screen image to remain sharp.
- Finish the customization and return to the Home Screen to check the result.
Apple offers Blur intentionally to make app icons easier to distinguish. If your Home Screen looks unexpectedly fuzzy, open the wallpaper customization screen and choose a non-blurred option.
Create an emoji or color wallpaper
You can make a simple design without importing an image:
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Emoji to create a repeating emoji pattern, or tap Color for a plain or gradient-style background.
- Adjust the available colors, arrangement, or pattern controls.
- Tap Add.
- Choose a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen separately.
The exact pattern and color controls can change between software releases. If a category is not visible, scroll through the wallpaper gallery; some Apple wallpaper options may display a Get button before they can be used. See Apple’s wallpaper support page for current availability details.

Use several photos with Photo Shuffle
Photo Shuffle automatically rotates personal images instead of keeping one picture fixed. From Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, choose Photo Shuffle, then select one of the available sources:
- Featured categories such as People, Nature, or Cities.
- An existing album.
- Photos selected manually.
You can also choose when the wallpaper changes:
- On Tap
- On Lock
- Hourly
- Daily
Categories and controls vary by device and software. A shuffled collection can also expose cropping problems that are not obvious with one image, so review the selected photos and remove pictures whose subjects sit too close to an edge.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use a Live Photo wallpaper on iPhone
Apple documents Live Photo Lock Screen wallpapers for iPhone running iOS 17 or later. To try one:
- Go to Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Photos, then Live Photo.
- Select the Live Photo.
- Make sure the play control is enabled if you want it to animate when the iPhone wakes.
- Tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or customize the Home Screen separately.
The file must still be a genuine Live Photo; a still image or an ordinary video is not equivalent. Live Photo behavior and availability are not automatically the same on iPad or on every newer software release. Check Apple’s Live Photo wallpaper instructions for the target device.
Try a spatial or 3D photo wallpaper
Apple’s current iPhone documentation says that certain photos can become spatial wallpapers on iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26. This is not a universal feature for every iPhone, iPad, or photo.
- Open Settings > Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Photos.
- Scroll to Spatial Scene.
- Select an eligible photo and wait for the spatial scene to generate.
- Tap Add.
- Choose the wallpaper-pair or Home Screen option.
Photos with good lighting, a clear separation between subject and background, or a landscape composition are more likely to qualify. Apple says the spatial effect applies to the Lock Screen, not the Home Screen. If Spatial Scene or the spatial button is missing, check the iPhone model, confirm iOS 26 is installed, and try a different photo. Availability on iPad should be treated as model- and software-dependent.

Link wallpapers to Focus
You can create multiple Lock Screens and associate them with Focus modes such as Work, Personal, Sleep, or Do Not Disturb. When that Focus activates, its linked Lock Screen appears with it.
To configure this, open the Lock Screen gallery, select or create a Lock Screen, tap the Focus option, and choose the Focus mode. The available choices and labels can vary by software version. This is separate from Photo Shuffle: Photo Shuffle rotates images within one wallpaper, while Focus switching changes between configured Lock Screens.
Fix common wallpaper problems
The subject is cropped
This usually happens because the source image and display have different aspect ratios, or because the subject is too close to an edge.
- Pinch to zoom out as far as the preview allows.
- Drag the image to reposition the subject.
- Re-edit the original with more empty space around the subject.
- Create separate iPhone and iPad versions instead of forcing one file to fit both.
Apple supports repositioning and zooming during Lock Screen customization.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsText is hidden
Move important text away from the top-center clock area and away from the regions where widgets and app icons appear. If the background is busy, add a plain shape, gradient, or shadow behind the text. Always inspect the applied wallpaper rather than judging only the editor preview.
The image looks blurry
Use the original photo or export the design at the highest practical quality. Blur can result from a low-resolution source, compression during download or sharing, or a small export canvas. A temporary preview scale can also make an image look softer than it will after application.

The Home Screen is blurry
Open the wallpaper customization screen, choose Customize Home Screen, and turn off Blur or select another background treatment.
The Lock Screen gallery will not open
Touch and hold the Lock Screen again. If Face ID does not open the gallery, enter the device passcode when prompted. You can always use Settings > Wallpaper as an alternative route.
A wallpaper category is missing
Scroll through the gallery and look for a Get button. Categories such as Weather, Astronomy, Nature, and other featured collections can depend on the device, operating system, and region.
A Live Photo does not animate
Confirm that the source is a Live Photo, the Live Photo option is selected, and the play control is enabled. Also verify that the target iPhone and software meet Apple’s support requirements.
The spatial effect does not appear
Check that the iPhone is an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26, then try another eligible image. Ordinary photos do not all convert into spatial wallpapers.
Do you need a wallpaper-making app?
For one photo, an emoji pattern, a color background, or Photo Shuffle, Apple’s tools are the simplest choice and require no additional app or subscription.
