For soft, full-looking ribbon, secure one end near the tree’s top, work downward, and tuck some sections into the branches while letting others billow outward. Wired ribbon is easiest to shape. Choose a wrap, cascade, zigzag, swag, or bows, and treat any ribbon-length estimate as a starting point—not a rule.
Choose ribbon that suits your tree and style
Match the ribbon to the tree’s shape and the look of its lights and ornaments. For a full tree, wide ribbon makes a stronger visual statement; thin ribbon is easier to scale to a slim or tabletop tree. Wired ribbon holds adjustable loops and billows, while non-wired ribbon can still work well for small bows.

Estimate how much ribbon to buy
Tree height gives you a useful first estimate, but the shape of the tree, ribbon width, and how densely you decorate all affect the amount you’ll use.

These are styling estimates, not a fixed requirement. If possible, buy an extra roll in the same color and pattern so you can extend the design without a visible change in ribbon.
Put ribbon on in the right order
- Shape the tree. On an artificial tree, spread and arrange branches so the tree looks full before decorating.
- Add lights. Place and check the lights before ribbon makes branches harder to reach.
- Add ribbon before most ornaments. This gives you room to tuck ribbon into the branches and adjust its path. Decorating order can vary with the look you want, but this sequence is a practical default. (Lowe’s)
Choose a ribbon placement technique
Loose horizontal wrap
Anchor the ribbon near the top or attach it to a sturdy branch. Circle the tree in descending passes, pushing selected sections back into the branches and allowing the sections between them to puff outward. Keep the spacing broadly consistent, but vary where you tuck the ribbon so the billows do not line up in a straight column. Avoid pulling the ribbon taut; a little slack creates softer movement.

Vertical cascades
Cut several lengths long enough to run from the crown to below the lowest branches. Secure each length at the top, weave it down through the tree, and finish by attaching it to a lower branch. Vary the twists and outward billows from one length to the next for a less uniform look.
Zigzags and short segments
For a graphic, less formal pattern, guide a ribbon back and forth as you work down the tree. You can also use shorter sections rather than one continuous length; this makes it easier to change direction or vary the spacing as you go.

Spirals, tails, and swags
A continuous spiral wraps diagonally around the tree, creating a candy-cane-like sweep. For a simpler look, let lengths hang from the top as tails. Or drape ribbon in separate swags; Home Depot describes swags of about 12 inches, arranged from the bottom upward. In each style, fasten the ribbon where needed rather than relying on tension to hold it in place. (Home Depot)
Separate bows
Tie individual bows onto branches or use one as a topper. Wired ribbon is convenient when you want to shape the loops, but non-wired ribbon can also be tied into bows.

Finish neatly and decorate safely
- Tuck ribbon ends into branches or fasten them out of sight. If a section slips, secure it with floral wire or a green pipe cleaner instead of pulling the whole run tighter.
- Keep fabric ribbon away from hot bulbs. Use lights in good condition with a recognized testing-laboratory label, and turn them off before leaving home or going to bed.
- For a live tree, keep it watered and at least three feet from heat sources. NIST explains that a demonstration tree kept watered did not ignite under the same ignition source that ignited a dry tree; moisture can limit ignition likelihood, fire growth rate, and peak fire size. This is not a guarantee that a watered tree cannot burn.
- Never use lit candles on a Christmas tree. This is NFPA guidance reproduced by NIST in its Holiday Fire Safety guidance, updated September 3, 2025.
- Use a stable setup when reaching high branches. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that falls accounted for 41% of the most frequent holiday decorating incidents, lacerations 10%, and back strains 5%; these are annual estimates for 2012–2014 cited in its 2018 release, not ribbon-specific statistics.
