You can tie-dye a shirt at home by folding, twisting or crumpling a clean, damp garment, binding it with rubber bands, applying fabric dye, and letting the color set according to the dye maker’s instructions. These three beginner patterns—spiral, stripes and crumple—use the same basic supplies but produce very different designs.

Supplies for tie-dyeing a shirt
- Clean cotton shirt, preferably white or a light color
- Fabric dye suitable for the shirt’s fiber, prepared exactly as its label directs
- Rubber bands
- Gloves
- Water
- Squeeze bottles if you are using a squirt-on dye method
- Plastic sheeting, a washable tray or another protected work surface
A tray or rack helps catch drips. Rit’s spiral instructions also use a prewash in warm, soapy water to remove finishes and leave the shirt damp. Follow your own dye package if its preparation differs.

Prepare the shirt and work area
- Cover the table or work surface. Dye can stain fabric, counters and clothing.
- Check the shirt’s fiber content and the dye label. Fabric composition, previous finishes and dye formulation all affect the result; do not assume one dye works equally well on every fiber.
- Prewash when the dye instructions call for it. Keep the shirt damp rather than letting it dry before folding.
- Put on gloves and mix or load the dye according to the manufacturer’s directions.
Pattern comes mainly from the way the fabric is folded, twisted, bunched and bound before color is added. The Rit tie-dye overview and adidas step-by-step guide use these same principles.

Choose a pattern
| Pattern | Visual result | Folding and binding | Color-placement control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spiral | Radial wedges rotating from a chosen center | Consistent twist into a flat disk, then bands crossed over the disk | High once the disk is divided into sections |
| Stripes | Repeated bands running vertically, horizontally or diagonally | Accordion folds with bands at regular intervals | High for direction and section width |
| Crumple | Irregular, broken color areas | Loose bunching into an uneven bundle | Lower and less geometric |
The ease and control descriptions are practical inferences from each folding method, not comparative test results.
Pattern 1: Spiral tie-dye
A spiral is made by twisting from a point you choose. The center does not have to be in the middle of the shirt; placing it near a shoulder, side seam or lower front is a design choice.

- Lay the clean, damp shirt flat.
- Pinch the fabric where you want the spiral center.
- Twist steadily in one direction, turning the shirt around that pinch point until the whole garment forms a tight, flat disk.
- Secure the disk with rubber bands crossing over it. The bands should divide the disk into wedge-shaped sections.
- Apply dye to the exposed sections, changing colors where you want the wedges to meet. Saturate the folds without letting the disk fall apart.
This pinch-and-twist method is shown in the Rit spiral guide and the adidas guide.

Let the dye set, then rinse and wash
- Place the tied shirt in a bag or other contained area while the dye sets. Use the time stated by your dye manufacturer.
- Do not treat one setting time as universal. Adidas describes leaving a bagged garment for up to 24 hours, while other products may specify a different period.
- Remove the rubber bands after the recommended setting period.
- Rinse the shirt thoroughly, following the dye maker’s directions for water temperature and rinsing order.
- Wash and care for the shirt as directed on the dye packaging. Rit identifies ColorStay Dye Fixative as an optional product used after dyeing; use it only as its label directs.
Keep the newly dyed garment separate from other laundry until the product instructions say it is safe to wash normally.

Fabric and color precautions
- White or light cotton is the simplest starting point for bright colors, but always verify fiber suitability on the dye label.
- Existing finishes and the shirt’s original color can change the final appearance.
- Wear gloves and protect the work surface to manage staining and spills.
- Follow the product label for preparation, setting, rinsing, washing and disposal; there is no single procedure that applies to every dye.
Optional variation: reverse tie-dye with bleach
Reverse tie-dye is a different process from adding fabric dye: it removes or lightens some of the shirt’s existing color with bleach. The Clorox reverse tie-dye guide specifically recommends 100% cotton, notes that the original dye affects how the bleach responds, and advises testing a hidden area first. Keep bleach products, ventilation, protective equipment and all label safety directions separate from the standard dye steps above; never assume a regular tie-dye recipe is suitable for bleach.
