The Trim It Tote is a lined, zipper-top bag pattern from AllPeopleQuilt, designed by M’Liss Rae Hawley. The finished bag measures 12 × 10 × 4-1/2 inches, and its defining detail is ribbon or trim topstitched onto the fabric before the bag is assembled. The pattern was published June 14, 2013; its measurements and instructions are those specified in that pattern.
What the Trim It Tote pattern makes
This is a personalized fabric tote with a zipper closure, two D-ring handle attachments and a flat, interfaced base. The trim is part of the pattern’s materials and construction, not simply a suggested finishing touch: it calls for 12 to 20 pieces, each 27 inches long and 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches wide.
AllPeopleQuilt’s official Trim It Tote pattern includes the supply list, cutting measurements and sewing instructions. The project also appears in the publisher’s 44 Free Bag Patterns roundup.

Materials and measurements
The fabric quantities in the pattern assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabric. Measurements include 1/4-inch seam allowances.

The finished tote measures 12 × 10 × 4-1/2 inches. For trim selection, the pattern’s practical constraint is that the pieces must be topstitched to the foundation fabric. Trims that lie flat are likely to be easier to stitch securely than bulky or highly textured choices; that is a practical consideration, not a tested comparison in the pattern.

How the tote is constructed
- Prepare and mark the foundation. Fuse the heavyweight interfacing to the foundation fabric, then use a water-soluble marker to mark the area where the trim will go.
- Apply the trim. Topstitch the ribbons or trims to the right side of the foundation, one piece at a time, leaving the amount of visible base fabric you want between rows. The decorated foundation is then cut into two panels, and the panel edges are stay-stitched.
- Make the handle and ring tabs. Thread fabric tabs through the D-rings and attach one tab to each panel. Fold and topstitch the handle strip.
- Install the zipper. Temporarily baste the bag panels together across the top, then press the seam open over a towel to protect the dimensional trim. Sew the zipper over the basted seam and remove the basting stitches.
- Shape the outer bag. Sew the sides and base, box the lower corners to form the flat bottom, and fuse the heavy interfacing into the base.
- Add the lining. Construct the lining in the same general way, insert it into the outer bag, turn its top edge under and hand-stitch it to the bag around the zipper area.
What the pattern does and does not specify
The published instructions provide the project’s materials, measurements and assembly sequence. They do not state a difficulty rating or estimated completion time, and they do not report testing results. The pattern is a single project rather than a comparison of alternate versions or materials.
