To create cat-eye nails, apply magnetic gel polish, hold a cat-eye magnet 2–5 mm above the still-wet color for about 5–10 seconds, then cure immediately. The magnet gathers metallic particles into a reflective beam or glow; magnetizing after the gel cures will not create the effect.
What creates the cat-eye effect
Magnetic gel polish contains tiny metallic or magnetic particles. While the gel is uncured, a nearby magnet pulls those particles into a concentrated reflection. Depending on the magnet angle and movement, the finish can look like a sharp diagonal stripe, a halo or a softer velvet glow. Sally Beauty describes it as “a luminous, shifting line that moves in the light,” while Le Mini Macaron calls the result a multi-dimensional shimmering effect.

Supplies you need
- Nail file and buffer
- Nail cleanser or prep solution
- Gel base coat
- Magnetic cat-eye gel polish
- Cat-eye magnet or magnetic plate
- UV or LED lamp compatible with your gel system
- Gel top coat
- Cleanser and cuticle oil
- Acetone, cotton and foil or soak-off wraps for removal
How to do cat-eye nails step by step

Prep each nail
Shape the free edge, lightly buff the surface, remove dust and cleanse away oils. Keep every product off the surrounding skin and cuticles.

Apply and cure base coat
Brush on a thin, even base coat and cure for the time specified by its label. As one example, CANNI lists 60 seconds under LED or 120 seconds under UV for its reinforcing/base step; other formulas and lamps can require different times.

Add an optional background color
A thin dark or coordinating color underneath can increase contrast. Cure this layer only if your chosen gel system instructs you to do so. Follow that brand’s directions rather than assuming every magnetic polish uses the same base sequence.

Apply the magnetic color
Gently roll or shake the bottle so settled particles redistribute. Paint a smooth, thin-to-medium coat of cat-eye gel. Leave it uncured.

Position the magnet
Hold the magnet approximately 2–5 mm above the wet surface for about 5–10 seconds without touching the nail. Keep it still for a crisp beam. A magnet held straight and close produces the classic stripe; tilting it creates a diagonal, while working around the center or sides spreads the reflection into a halo or velvet look.

Cure immediately
As soon as the pattern looks right, move the hand to the lamp and cure that nail. The particles can diffuse while the gel remains wet, so work one nail at a time and do not magnetize all ten nails before curing.

Seal the design
Apply a thin top coat, cap the free edge and cure. A glossy top coat preserves the reflective appearance; a matte top coat mutes the shine.

Finish
If your system leaves a tacky layer, wipe it as directed. Apply cuticle oil after curing and cleansing.

Choose a sharp stripe or a velvet halo

Troubleshoot a missing or messy line
Flat glitter instead of a beam
The gel may have been cured before magnetizing, the magnet may be too far away, or the bottle may need mixing. Apply a fresh wet layer and repeat the magnet step before curing.
Blurred stripe
Keep the magnet steady and cure immediately after removing it. Movement or delay lets the particles spread.

Uneven pull from nail to nail
Use the same magnet distance and timing on each nail, avoid touching the wet surface and complete one nail before starting the next.
Lifting or short wear
Check surface preparation, keep coats thin, cap the free edge and use the cure time specified for the exact product and lamp combination.
Safe removal
Do not peel or force gel from the nail. Break the top-coat seal, wrap the nail with acetone-soaked cotton for about 10–15 minutes, then gently remove only the softened product. Repeat soaking instead of scraping aggressively. If it does not soften, stop and follow the brand’s removal directions. CANNI’s product guidance states: “Never peel or force the gel off, as this can damage the natural nail.” Keep uncured gel off skin and cuticles, and provide ventilation appropriate for nail products.
