There was no single best vector application in 2022. Adobe Illustrator was the safest professional standard; CorelDRAW was especially strong for print, signage and production; Affinity Designer offered a value-focused professional workflow; Inkscape delivered capable open-source editing at no purchase price; and Lunacy suited lightweight, cross-platform UI and design work. SVGator, SVGStorm and CADE—three products in the original November 20, 2022 list—are better understood as specialist animation, tracing and diagramming tools rather than direct substitutes for a full vector editor.
This guide preserves the historical 2022 context while separating current product and pricing signals where they are available.

What “vector graphics software” includes
Vector artwork is built from mathematically defined paths, shapes, fills, strokes and text, so it can scale for a logo, icon, poster or large sign without the pixelation associated with raster images. However, products marketed as vector software serve different jobs:
- Vector editors create and modify paths, typography, gradients, masks, symbols and illustrations.
- Vector animation tools animate SVG objects or paths for websites and applications.
- Raster-to-vector tracers convert PNG, JPEG or other pixel images into editable paths.
- Diagramming applications focus on maps, circuits, flowcharts and technical layouts.
- UI/design platforms use vector objects for interface and product design but may not replace a prepress or illustration application.
The original Tech Times article, published November 20, 2022, listed SVGator, CorelDRAW, SVGStorm, CADE and Lunacy: the original list. Its category is broad, so the recommendations below are organized by the work you actually need to do.
Quick comparison of the five general-purpose choices
| Software | Best for | Platforms | 2022 pricing information | Main strength | Biggest limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adobe Illustrator | Professional illustration, branding and compatibility | Desktop Adobe workflow; verify edition requirements | Not stated in the supplied 2022 evidence | Deep tools, typography and industry adoption | Subscription and learning curve |

| Affinity Designer | Value-oriented professional design | Check the applicable 2022 edition | Not stated | Vector and pixel workflows in one application | Smaller ecosystem and compatibility envelope |
| Inkscape | Free and open-source SVG work | Major desktop operating systems; version matters | Free/open source | No purchase price and strong SVG orientation | Less integrated production and collaboration tooling |
| Lunacy | Lightweight UI and cross-platform design | Windows, macOS, Linux and browser (current positioning) | Free entry point; plan terms vary | Offline mode, built-in assets and collaboration | Not a full replacement for advanced illustration or prepress |
How to choose
- General vector depth: confirm the application handles paths, compound shapes, strokes, masks, gradients, symbols and live text.
- Typography: important for logos, packaging, editorial work and lettering.
- Print and prepress: check CMYK, ICC profiles, spot colors, bleed, crop marks, overprint preview and PDF/X export with your printer.
- SVG output: test viewBox behavior, masks, filters, gradients, embedded images, accessibility metadata and file size.
- Tracing: automatic conversion is convenient, but photographs and complex sketches usually need substantial cleanup.
- Platform and offline access: account for Windows, macOS, Linux, browser, tablet and connectivity requirements.
- Collaboration and assets: built-in libraries, cloud storage, AI credits and team seats can alter the real cost.
- File compatibility: fonts, blend modes, mesh gradients, linked files, plugins, live objects and clipping masks may change between applications.
1. Adobe Illustrator: best professional standard
Illustrator is the strongest default when agencies, printers, publishers or clients expect an established professional workflow. Adobe positions it for logos, brand graphics, scalable print and digital artwork, precise vector editing, typography and AI-assisted features: official Illustrator page.

Why choose it
- Extensive path, shape, typography, color and production controls.
- Broad agency, plugin, tutorial and template ecosystem.
- Strong handoff when collaborators already use Adobe applications.
Trade-offs
- Subscription licensing and dependence on an Adobe account.
- A steeper learning curve than lightweight editors.
- More capability than necessary for occasional icons or simple SVGs.
As a current, non-2022 reference, Adobe’s US individual page shows Illustrator at US$22.99 per month on an annual plan billed monthly, with Adobe Express Premium, 100GB storage and generative credits included; plans and promotions vary by region and date. See Adobe plan details.
2. CorelDRAW: best for print, signage and production
CorelDRAW Graphics Suite combines vector illustration, page layout, photo editing, typography and web or print output. Corel’s current product page describes Windows and Mac support plus a browser-based web app: CorelDRAW product information.
Why choose it
- Well suited to sign-making, apparel, large-format output and print shops.
- Layout, photo and type tools are available in one suite.
- Useful for production teams that need repeatable output rather than only drawing.
Trade-offs
- The suite can be excessive for a user who only edits occasional SVG files.
- Illustrator files and effects should be tested before a team migrates an archive.
- Hardware, browser and edition requirements should be checked before purchase.
3. Affinity Designer: best value-oriented professional alternative
Affinity Designer targets vector illustration, UI graphics, patterns and mixed vector/pixel work. It is a sensible 2022 choice for freelancers, students and independent designers who wanted professional depth without committing to Adobe’s subscription model. Verify the relevant edition, price, licensing and update policy at Affinity’s official product page.

Trade-offs

- Proprietary Illustrator effects and live objects may not transfer perfectly.
- Do not assume a current perpetual license or price applies to the 2022 release.
4. Inkscape: best free and open-source option
Inkscape is a capable open-source vector editor for SVG creation, logos, diagrams and general illustration. Download history matters when discussing a 2022 feature or compatibility claim; use the official site and release archive to identify the version.
Recommended Free Tools
Why choose it
- No purchase price or subscription.
- Open-source distribution is useful for schools, hobbyists and small organizations.
- Strong orientation toward editable SVG files.
Trade-offs
- The interface may feel less polished to users coming from commercial suites.
- Advanced typography, collaboration and commercial prepress can require workarounds.

Specialist products from the original 2022 list

SVGator is a no-code animation tool for SVG objects and paths, with interaction triggers such as click, hover and scroll. Its current pricing page shows a free plan and Starter at $20 per month when billed yearly: SVGator pricing.

Paid tiers add interactive animation and exports such as Lottie, React Native and Flutter. The free plan permits watermark-free SVG exports, while several raster and video exports have restrictions or watermarks; the pricing FAQ says free rendered files are stored for 60 days before deletion.
SVGStorm: tracing utility
The 2022 article presents SVGStorm as a browser-based converter for PNG, JPEG, BMP, TIFF, WebP and PDF. Treat it as a raster-to-vector utility and compare its results with automatic tracing in a full editor, not with a complete drawing application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →CADE: technical diagramming
CADE is aimed at maps, flowcharts, electrical circuits, networks and technical layouts. It may be the right specialist tool for engineering or network diagrams, but it is not a mainstream choice for branding, illustration or advanced typography.

File formats and migration checks
Common formats include SVG, PDF, EPS, AI, CDR, DXF, PNG and JPEG. Some workflows also involve PSD, WebP, Lottie, React Native, Flutter, GIF or video. Importing a format does not guarantee identical rendering: fonts, effects, gradients, transparency, blend modes, masks, linked images, symbols and plugins can change.
- Open a representative project in the target application.
- Check fonts, live text, clipping masks, gradients, transparency and linked assets.
- Export the files your printer, developer or client actually needs.
- Compare color, dimensions, viewBox behavior, file size and output on the final device or press.
- Only then migrate an archive or standardize a team workflow.
Common mistakes
- Calling an animation tool a general illustration editor.
- Assuming two applications that “support SVG” will render every effect identically.
- Comparing a promotional or annual-billing figure with a standard monthly price.
- Ignoring CMYK, spot colors, bleed and PDF/X requirements until the print deadline.
- Using built-in stock assets without checking commercial, trademark and redistribution rights.
- Choosing solely because software is free or widely used, without matching it to the actual workflow.
Which software should you choose?
| Your priority | Recommended choice |
|---|---|
| Maximum professional compatibility and typography | Adobe Illustrator |
| Print shops, signage, apparel and production output | CorelDRAW |
| Professional features with a value focus | Affinity Designer |
| Zero purchase budget or open-source requirements | Inkscape |
| Cross-platform UI design, offline work and built-in assets | Lunacy |
| Interactive or animated SVG for web and apps | SVGator |
| Technical schematics and network diagrams | CADE |
| Quick conversion of raster images to paths | SVGStorm or a tracing feature in a full editor |
Final verdict
For the broadest professional vector workflow, choose Illustrator. Choose CorelDRAW when print, signage and production are central; Affinity Designer when value matters; Inkscape when free and open source are non-negotiable; and Lunacy when lightweight, collaborative, cross-platform design is the priority. SVGator is the better answer for animated SVG, while SVGStorm and CADE solve tracing and technical-diagram problems. The 2022 list is useful as a snapshot, but its products should not be treated as one directly comparable ranking.
