Baste the quilt sandwich, plan a route that avoids duplicate lines, and let a compatible walking foot feed the layers as you sew.

Straight-line quilting joins a quilt top, batting, and backing with a series of planned straight stitches. A compatible walking foot helps feed the layers evenly, but the essential steps are to baste the sandwich, choose a route, and guide the quilt without pulling it.

What you need

  • A sewing machine and a walking-foot attachment compatible with it.
  • A new size 80/12 needle and 50-weight thread, a setup recommended by Jennifer Keltner in AllPeopleQuilt’s straight-line quilting lesson.
  • A quilt top, batting, and backing, plus pins or another suitable basting method.
  • Optional: a quilting ruler and painter’s tape to help mark or guide lines, and spray-baste adhesive if it suits your project and materials.

Check your machine manual before attaching a foot or changing the needle plate. The requirements can vary by machine; for example, Brother’s official JX2517 manual specifies a walking foot and straight-stitch needle plate for straight-line quilting. Do not assume that a walking foot will fit every machine.

Why use a walking foot?

A walking foot adds upper feeding to the machine’s feed dogs, helping the quilt top and backing move along with the layers beneath. That more even movement can help reduce shifting and tucks, particularly where quilting lines cross. As Keltner explains, it helps pull the top and bottom layers evenly; the foot supports feeding, but it does not replace basting or careful handling.

1/4 inch Snap on Foot w/Guide | Fits Low Shank Sewing Machines - Babylock, Brother, Janome, Singer, and More | Quarter Inch Foot for Patchwork, Quilting, and Piecing
  • Use this foot when pivoting, topstitching, or for 1/4" seams.
  • Reference markings on the side of the foot for visibility and accuracy.
  • Flat bottom ensures that the material will make good contact with the feed dogs.
  • Guide on foot makes it easy to obtain a 1/4" seam allowance. Place the edge of the fabric against the guide while you sew.
  • This 1/4 inch snap-on foot is compatible with most low shank machines (adapter may be required).

Prepare the quilt sandwich

  1. Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top, smoothing each layer so it lies flat.
  2. Baste the layers together with pins or another suitable method before sewing. A secure, smooth sandwich is easier to guide than loose layers.
  3. Attach the compatible walking foot and install a new size 80/12 needle. Thread the machine with 50-weight thread if following the featured setup.
  4. Use the presser-foot and needle-plate arrangement required by your machine manual. Stitch length and batting choice depend on the machine and project; the cited lesson does not prescribe a universal setting.

Choose a quilting route

Stitch in the ditch

Follow existing seams to quilt along block edges or other seam lines. This is a straightforward option when you want the quilting to follow the piecing.

Make a cross-hatch

Plan parallel diagonal lines across a block or the quilt top, then add a second set of diagonals to create a cross-hatched pattern. Before sewing, work out how you will move between lines: use the ditch or a block edge where possible rather than sewing the same path twice.

  • Heavy duty construction: engineered for precision and designed for use even with thicker fabric layers

Sew the lines without shifting layers

  1. Begin with the quilt supported on the machine bed and nearby table so its weight does not tug on the stitching area.
  2. Guide the sandwich steadily and let the feed system move it. Do not pull or push against the walking foot.
  3. At a turn, stop with the needle down, pivot the quilt, and continue along the next planned line.
  4. Between diagonal passes, travel along a seam or block edge when that connects the route without duplicating a line.
  5. Keep supporting the quilt as you work so bulk does not drag on the section being stitched.

Common problems and adjustments

  • The layers shift or form tucks: Confirm the quilt was basted before stitching, check that the walking foot is installed correctly, and support the quilt’s weight rather than pulling it through.
  • The route doubles back over a line: Pause to plan the next pass. Use a seam or block edge to connect lines where practical.
  • The foot or plate does not seem right: Stop and check the machine manual for compatible attachments and needle-plate requirements instead of forcing a fit.
  • You are unsure about stitch length or batting: Consult the machine manual and make choices for the specific machine and quilt; a single setting or batting thickness is not established for every project.
