Ride the Wave is a free quilted table-runner pattern from American Patchwork & Quilting, designed around subtle shifts in ocean-blue batiks. The finished runner measures 19-1/4 × 44-3/4 inches. It is a piecing and quilting project—not a ready-made runner—and the pattern is available through the publisher’s official project page.
What the Ride the Wave pattern makes
The design uses tonal changes among blue batiks to create its wave-like effect. The published sample uses Northcott Stonehenge Gradations in the Robin’s Egg colorway, designed by Linda Ludovico. The project credits Sarah Huechteman as quilt tester and notes that it was inspired by Cheddar Together by Joyce Dean Gieszler. The August 2020 issue page lists Ride the Wave as a color option for that design.
The finished dimensions are 19-1/4 × 44-3/4 inches. American Patchwork & Quilting does not state a difficulty rating or estimated completion time, so those should not be inferred from the size alone.

Fabric and batting requirements
The official materials list specifies:
| Material | Amount |
|---|---|
| Cream batik | 1/2 yard |
| Aqua batik | 1/2 yard |
| Teal batik | 1/2 yard |
| Light-blue batik | 1/8 yard |
| Binding fabric | 1/4 yard |
| Backing fabric | 1-1/2 yards |
| Batting | 28 × 53 inches |
These are the pattern’s stated quantities; cutting instructions assume 42 inches of usable fabric width. The sample’s Robin’s Egg colorway is identified in the project credits, but current availability is not established. Choose batiks with distinct cream, aqua, teal, and light-blue values if you want to preserve the tonal contrast.
How the construction is organized
The pattern builds three blocks—two Block A units and one Block B unit—from strip-set corner units, pieced side units, and center units. Cream setting and corner triangles are then used to arrange the blocks in diagonal rows.

- Join the quilt center. Arrange the blocks with the cream setting and corner triangles in diagonal rows, then join the rows. Trim the assembled quilt center to 13-1/4 × 38-3/4 inches.
- Add borders and finish. Add the aqua inner borders and teal outer borders. Layer the top with batting and backing, quilt as desired, then bind with four 2-1/2 × 42-inch strips.
