Make a lace-like doily piñata by covering a lightweight shell with overlapping paper doilies. A punch-balloon shell is a natural choice for a round piñata; a lantern or taped cardboard form works when you want a different shape. Leave an opening for filling, let each layer dry, and reinforce the hanging point before use.
Choose a base for the shape

Gather the materials
For a balloon shell
- Punch-ball balloon and a cylindrical support, such as an oatmeal container
- Newspaper, tissue, or other paper for the shell strips
- White glue or flour-and-water paste; a brush for applying it
- Small paper doilies, plus a glue stick or decoupage medium for attaching them
- Scissors, water, a wide-mouth container, and wax paper or newspaper to protect the work surface
- Sturdy yarn, twine, or thin rope for hanging, and a wooden clothespin or stick if using the hanger arrangement in Make’s tutorial
- Lightweight filling
For a cardboard shell
- Cardboard for matching front and back shapes and connecting side strips
- Masking or painter’s tape to join and reinforce seams
- Paper doilies and a thin adhesive such as decoupage medium, diluted white glue, or glue stick
- A foam brush or paintbrush, scissors, and sturdy string, twine, or ribbon
- Optional tissue paper, crepe paper, ribbon, or other decorations
Make lists Mod Podge Hard Coat among its supplies; GeekChamp also describes white glue, decoupage medium, and glue stick as adhesive options. Use one adhesive approach consistently rather than combining different sequences as though they had been tested together.

Build the shell and keep an opening
Balloon method
- Set the balloon on a stable support so it does not roll while you work.
- Apply overlapping paper strips with paste or glue to form a shell. Leave an opening large enough to remove the balloon and add the filling.
- Let the shell dry between layers. Do not cover the opening or try to remove the balloon while the shell is still soft.
- When the shell is firm, remove the balloon through the opening.
Cardboard method
- Cut two matching shapes from cardboard.
- Connect their edges with cardboard side strips, then tape the seams. Reinforce corners and the area where the hanger will attach.
- Keep a filling opening accessible. Close it only after decorating and adding the filling.
Apply the doilies without tearing them
- Arrange the doilies over the dry shell first to decide how their edges will overlap.
- Work in small areas and use a thin, even coat of adhesive. Press gently: wet doilies are delicate and can tear.
- Overlap the edges so the underlying shell is covered. If desired, add tissue, crepe paper, ribbon, or other accents, but keep the doilies as the main surface for the lace effect.
- Let the decorative layer dry before filling or handling the piñata further.
Make describes using a dab of glue stick to preview doily placement, followed by paste and a thin Mod Podge coat. GeekChamp recommends small work areas, light adhesive, and overlapping sections. Those are separate tutorial approaches; choose one sequence rather than assuming the adhesives should be layered in that order.

Fill it lightly and secure the hanger
- Add lightweight, age-appropriate wrapped candy or favors through the opening. Avoid sharp-edged items and do not pack the shell tightly.
- Close the opening with paper after filling.
- Attach sturdy cord or ribbon at a reinforced point. GeekChamp describes reinforcing the hanging area with cardboard or a washer; Make lists yarn, thin rope, or twine and a clothespin or stick for its hanging arrangement.
- Before hanging, check that the attachment point is secure and that the piñata remains light. Neither tutorial gives a certified load rating, so do not treat its construction advice as a guarantee of safe capacity.
Allow time for drying
Make author Jessica Wilson estimates that her project can take up to a week, reflecting repeated drying stages; that is not a universal completion time. The actual schedule depends on the shell layers, adhesive, and drying conditions. Plan for the shell and doily finish to dry fully before filling and hanging.
