To download a font from DaFont, open the font’s listing, select Download, save the ZIP file, extract it, and install the extracted .ttf or .otf file. A ZIP archive is not installed directly. The exact installation step depends on whether you use Windows, macOS, or Linux.
The quick method
- Go to DaFont and search or browse for a font.
- Open the individual font listing. Review its preview, character map, author information, and the license indication near the download control.
- Click Download and save the ZIP archive somewhere easy to find, such as your Downloads folder.
- Extract the ZIP archive into a normal folder.
- Find the extracted
.ttfor.otffont file. - Install that font file using the instructions for your operating system below.
- Close and reopen your design, word-processing, or presentation application if the font does not immediately appear in its font list.
Before downloading: check the font and its license
DaFont listings usually show a preview, a character map, the author’s name, and a usage label near the Download button. Use the character map to check whether the font contains the letters, accented characters, numbers, and punctuation you need.

DaFont explains that fonts remain the property of their authors and may be freeware, shareware, demo versions, or public-domain works. The archive may contain a readme or license file with more complete terms.
Important: “Free for personal use” does not normally mean that you can use a font in paid client work, merchandise, advertising, monetized videos, or a business logo. Read the license in the downloaded archive, check the author’s website when available, and contact the author if the permitted use is unclear. If no author or license information is shown, that means DaFont does not have the information—it does not automatically mean the font is free.

Step 1: download the DaFont ZIP file
- Search DaFont or browse one of its font categories.
- Select the font’s listing to open its details page.
- Check the preview and character map. If you need a particular accented letter or symbol, confirm that it is included.
- Read the displayed usage indication and look for the author or creator information.
- Click the listing’s Download button.
- Save the resulting ZIP archive to a known location, such as
Downloads.
The download is generally a compressed archive, not an already-installed font. Depending on the typeface, the archive may include one font file, several weights or styles, a readme, license terms, and author information.
Step 2: extract the downloaded archive
Open your Downloads folder and extract the ZIP file before trying to install anything inside it. On Windows, use Extract All; on macOS, double-clicking the ZIP normally creates an extracted folder. On Linux, use the extraction option provided by your file manager or archive utility.

Do not install the ZIP file itself, and do not select the readme or license document. If the archive contains several font files, they may represent different weights or styles, such as regular, bold, light, italic, or condensed. Install only the styles you need, or install the complete family if you intend to use it and the license allows that use.
Install a DaFont font on Windows
- Extract the downloaded ZIP file.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click the
.ttfor.otffile. - Select Install. If Windows asks for permission, approve the installation.
- Repeat the process for any additional font styles you want to install.
- Reopen the application in which you want to use the font.
You can also double-click the font file to open it in Windows Font Previewer and select Install. Microsoft documents TrueType and OpenType as supported font formats. Windows stores installed fonts in its Fonts area, and copying an extracted font file there is another possible installation method, but the right-click Install workflow is usually simpler.

If Windows does not show “Install”
- Make sure you extracted the ZIP archive first.
- Confirm that you selected a file ending in
.ttfor.otf, rather than the ZIP, readme, or license file. - Check that the file is genuinely a font file. Do not rename an unrelated file to give it a font extension.
- Try opening the font in Windows Font Previewer and installing it from there.
Install a DaFont font on macOS
- Open your Downloads folder and extract the DaFont ZIP archive.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Double-click the
.ttfor.otffile. - Font Book will open a preview of the font.
- Select Install.
- Repeat the process for any other weights or styles in the family.
- Quit and reopen the application where you want to use the font.
Font Book supports TrueType and OpenType fonts. It validates fonts during installation and checks for duplicates. The installation location controls whether the font is available only to your user account or to other users on the Mac, so pay attention to the location shown by Font Book.

Some older DaFont instructions mention manually copying files to /Library/Fonts for all users or /Users/Your_username/Library/Fonts for one user. Font Book is the preferred modern macOS workflow because it provides a preview, validation, duplicate detection, and installation controls.
Install a DaFont font on Linux
Linux font installation varies by desktop environment, but the basic process is the same: extract the archive and install the actual .ttf or .otf file rather than the ZIP.
Using the desktop font viewer
- Extract the ZIP archive.
- Open the extracted font file in your desktop environment’s font previewer.
- Select the available Install option.
- Restart the application that should use the font.
Using a fonts location
DaFont’s Linux guidance also describes copying font files to the file manager’s fonts:// location or to your personal hidden .fonts directory. If the directory does not exist, you may need to create it. Enable Show Hidden Files in the file manager if you cannot see directories beginning with a period.
The exact menu names and refresh behavior depend on your Linux distribution and desktop environment. If the font does not appear after installation, close and reopen the target application.

Use the font in Word, a design program, or another application
After installation, open the application’s font menu and search for the font’s family name. The filename and the name shown in the application may not be identical. If the font is missing, fully close and reopen the application; Microsoft specifically notes that Microsoft 365 applications may need to be reopened before newly installed fonts become available.
A font installed on one computer is not automatically installed on another. If you send a document to someone who does not have the font, their application may substitute a default font. For shared documents, either install the font on the other computer or use a workflow that embeds or otherwise legally distributes the font, provided the font’s license permits that use.

What you should keep after installation
Keep the original ZIP archive, the extracted font files, and the license or readme in a clearly named folder if you may need to reinstall the font later. This is especially useful after moving to a new computer or restoring a system. Keep the license information with the font so you can verify whether a future project is allowed.
For a large collection, organize fonts by family or project rather than scattering individual files across Downloads. Storage is optional for the basic DaFont workflow; you do not need any additional device or utility to download or install one font.

Can I install the ZIP file from DaFont?
