GemTones is a completed six-part quilt-along from American Patchwork & Quilting and AllPeopleQuilt, not an active 2026 subscription. The free pattern archive remains accessible on the AllPeopleQuilt project page, where quilters can find the six block installments, finishing instructions, and separate material lists for rotary cutting and die cutting. Designed by Lori Miller, the monochrome sampler uses gemstone-inspired color families and finishes at 70 1/2 × 93 inches.

The project can be made with conventional rotary-cutting tools. AccuQuilt users can instead follow the documented die-cutting route based on the GO! Qube Mix & Match 10-inch Block, model 55797. That equipment is optional—not a requirement for making GemTones.

What is the GemTones Block of the Month?

GemTones is a finished 2024–2025 block-of-the-month quilt project designed by Lori Miller. Its six sampler installments are organized around gemstone names:

  1. Month 1: Ruby Blocks
  2. Month 2: Emerald Blocks
  3. Month 3: Amethyst Blocks
  4. Month 4: Topaz Blocks
  5. Month 5: Rose Quartz Blocks
  6. Month 6: Sapphire Blocks

After the six block months, the archive provides a separate set of finishing instructions. The completed quilt measures 70 1/2 × 93 inches, making it a substantial bed-sized or large-throw-style project rather than a small wall quilt.

The project was distributed through the American Patchwork & Quilting and AllPeopleQuilt publishing ecosystem. For historical context, the April 2025 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting presented Topaz as the fourth block in the six-block series and gave that finished block size as 20 inches square. That issue was sold from February 21 through April 18, 2025.

Because the monthly program has ended, the most accurate way to describe GemTones now is as an archived, free quilt-along pattern collection. It should not be described as a currently shipping kit, a live monthly subscription, or an active 2026 BOM. Lori Miller’s December 31, 2025 project update confirmed that the BOM had ended while noting that the patterns remained free on the AllPeopleQuilt website. Availability can change, so check the archive before beginning.

Why the gemstone color concept works

GemTones is built around a monochrome-sampler idea: each named section evokes a gemstone through a coordinated color family rather than relying on one flat, uniform fabric color. That gives the quilt a strong organizing concept while leaving room for value changes, texture, and subtle variation within each block group.

  • The colors remain fresh and bright even after repeated washing. No pilling, no staining. It is a very nice fine 100% cotton fabric.
  • Size About 20"*20"(50 cm*50 cm),Package include 7 PCS cotton fabric,Cotton products may shrink, so please hand wash them
  • Many adorable sewing ideas can be implemented, e.g. linen bags, tablecloths, decorations, children's bedding, wallet, diaper bags, protective covers, pennant chains, utensil, scarf, doll clothes.
  • Pure cotton fabric in soft shirt quality 120 (g / ㎡). material, pure 100% cotton
  • Thin design, suitable for use with two layers together!!!Suitable for making bedsheets, toys, etc. Regarding size, it is measured manually and cut in batches by machine, so there may be minor errors. Please be aware

The six names also provide a practical planning system. Instead of choosing fabrics for every block independently, you can sort the project into six visual families—red, green, purple, gold-orange, pink, and blue. Within each family, lighter and darker fabrics help the piecing read clearly and keep the sampler from appearing visually flat.

For the most faithful interpretation, keep the families visually distinct from one another and use value contrast inside each block. Before cutting, place swatches for every planned color on a design wall or photograph them in grayscale. A fabric that looks strongly different in color may have nearly the same value as its neighbor, which can make seams and shapes disappear.

Fabrics specified for GemTones

The published project materials identify two fabric collections by Renee Nanneman for Andover Fabrics: Cottage Cloth and Cottage Cloth II. The listed colors are:

Cottage Cloth

  • Chili
  • Ocean
  • Violet
  • Yam
  • Pumpkin
  • Pink Fizz
  • Indigo
  • Creamery

Cottage Cloth II

  • Watermelon
  • Rosy
  • Spruce
  • Aqua
  • Lavendar
  • Wisteria
  • Apricot
  • Thistle
  • Mauvelous
  • Denim
  • Bay
  • Pearl

These are the colors identified in the original project materials; they are not a guarantee that every color is still manufactured, stocked, or easy to find. Check current retailer inventory and compare swatches when matching the original palette.

If the named fabrics are unavailable, substitute quilting cottons by color family, value, and scale rather than by color name alone. A coordinated monochrome gemstone quilt fabric selection can work well if the substitute fabrics have compatible weights and behave similarly during pressing and piecing. Avoid combining very different fabric types merely because their colors match.

25 Pcs Blue Quilting Fabric Squares 10 x 10 Inch Cotton Precut
  • Pre-Cut Consistency:Each piece is a 10×10-inch precut fabric square (with a tolerance of 0.2 inches). These blue fabric squares serve as quilt squares, charm pack fabric, and layer cake fabric all at once; they’re ideal for quilt kits with fabric and pattern, and their uniform size supports seamless assembly whether you're using them as blue fabric scraps, quilting fabric, or authentic cotton fabric — including gingham fabric prints and other vintage fabric–inspired motifs.
  • Cohesive Blue Palette:The full set features 25 distinct patterns — all rooted in a harmonious blue color family. This makes the blue fabric scraps exceptionally versatile: perfect as quilting fabric for modern projects or nostalgic pieces, as blue fabric squares for scrappy quilts, or as curated elements within precut quilt kits — with gingham fabric variations and tonal textures reinforcing both contemporary and vintage fabric aesthetics — all on premium cotton fabric.
  • Quilting & Craft:Designed for real-world use, these quilt squares simplify every stage — from piecing to binding. As quilting fabric, they offer the trusted hand-feel and stability of natural cotton fabric; as precut fabric squares, they eliminate measuring and cutting; and as blue fabric scraps, they lend themselves beautifully to patchwork, doll clothes, pillows, and holiday decor — whether used alone or combined in quilt kits with fabric and pattern.
  • Authentic Cotton Fabric Performance:Made from cotton fabric, This makes them suitable as layer cake fabric units, charm pack fabric selections, or blue fabric squares for intricate applique, gingham fabric–based designs, or vintage fabric–themed accessories — all while maintaining true cotton fabric integrity.
  • Endless Creative Applications:In addition to traditional quilting, these blue fabric squares open doors to bags, home decor, toys, and more. Their blue fabric scraps nature invites mixing and matching; their precut quilt kits compatibility supports structured learning or group projects; and the inclusion of gingham fabric patterns, tonal prints, and vintage fabric–style motifs ensures relevance across skill levels — all built on the trusted foundation of cotton fabric.

Keep the fabric plan organized by month. Label cuts or grouped yardage as Ruby, Emerald, Amethyst, Topaz, Rose Quartz, or Sapphire before starting. This prevents a similar-looking purple, blue, or pink from drifting into the wrong section and makes it easier to work through the archive one installment at a time.

Where to find the archived patterns

Use the GemTones project page on AllPeopleQuilt as the central access point. The page contains separate links for:

  • Ruby block instructions
  • Emerald block instructions
  • Amethyst block instructions
  • Topaz block instructions
  • Rose Quartz block instructions
  • Sapphire block instructions
  • Quilt-finishing instructions
  • Material requirements for rotary cutting
  • Material requirements for die cutting

Download the material-requirement sheet that matches your cutting method before purchasing fabric. The two methods may organize the required materials differently, so relying on a generic supply list can lead to missing strips, specialty shapes, or unnecessary fabric.

Save the PDFs locally as you work. The archive was still accessible during the research for this article, but an archived free project is not the same as a permanent guarantee that every page or download will remain online.

Rotary cutting versus AccuQuilt die cutting

GemTones supports both ordinary rotary cutting and AccuQuilt die cutting. Choose based on the equipment you already own, the way you prefer to work, and whether repeatable shapes or a lower initial cost matter more to you.

Method Best suited to Advantages Things to consider
Rotary cutting Quilters who already have standard cutting tools or want to avoid specialty equipment Uses familiar equipment; no dedicated die cutter is required; flexible for substitutions Requires careful measuring, marking, and cutting; repeated shapes must be cut consistently
AccuQuilt die cutting Quilters who own or want to use a compatible GO! cutter Pre-shaped dies can make repeated cutting more consistent and reduce some measuring work Requires a compatible cutter, dies, mats, and fabric; equipment cost is additional

The rotary route requires ordinary quilting equipment: a rotary cutter, Self-healing cutting mat, quilting ruler, fabric-marking supplies, sewing machine, thread, pins or clips, and pressing tools. A 45mm rotary cutter, a large self-healing quilting mat, and a 6 × 24-inch quilting ruler are practical categories to consider, but no particular brand is required or identified as tested for this project.

For the die-cutting route, the designer specifically named the AccuQuilt GO! Qube Mix & Match 10-inch Block, model 55797. It is an optional precision-cutting route, not a mandatory GemTones purchase. AccuQuilt identifies model 55797 as compatible with GO!, GO! Bolt, and GO! Big fabric cutters. The set includes eight dies, 6 × 6-inch and 10 × 10-inch cutting mats, instructional videos, a storage box, and a pattern booklet. An AccuQuilt GO! fabric cutter and fabric are additionally required.

If you are buying equipment specifically for this project, verify the current model, contents, and availability before ordering. The designer’s documented setup is the 10-inch Qube, but purchasing a die set alone does not replace the compatible fabric cutter.

The published compatibility list also names the AccuQuilt Strip Cutter 2 1/2-inch, model 55017, and the AccuQuilt Strip Cutter 3-inch, model 55084. These are optional accessories associated with the die-cutting approach. They are not required for a quilter following the rotary-cutting instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if you use a different Qube size?

The project notes say that an 8-inch or 9-inch Qube can also be used, but the resulting blocks will be smaller while retaining the same basic shapes. Lori Miller used the 10-inch Qube for the full-size quilt top, producing 20-inch finished blocks. Do not assume that changing Qube size will preserve the published finished quilt dimensions; recalculate the overall layout and finishing measurements for a different scale.

Optional miniature version

Lori Miller also made a half-size miniature version using a 5-inch Qube. This provides an alternative for quilters who want the GemTones design at a smaller scale or who want to test the construction before committing to the full quilt.

A miniature made with a smaller Qube should be treated as a separate scaled project. The published full-size measurements, cutting dimensions, and finishing instructions should not automatically be applied without checking how the smaller blocks affect sashings, borders, and the final layout.

A practical GemTones supply checklist

For rotary cutting

  • Fabric from the specified Cottage Cloth collections or coordinated quilting-cotton substitutes
  • Rotary cutter and replacement blade
  • Self-healing cutting mat large enough for accurate strip cutting
  • Quilting ruler, such as a 6 × 24-inch ruler suited to the required cuts
  • Fabric-marking tool, if required by the instructions
  • Thread, sewing machine, pins or clips, and a reliable iron and pressing surface
  • The archive’s rotary-cutting material-requirement PDF

For AccuQuilt cutting

  • Compatible AccuQuilt GO!, GO! Bolt, or GO! Big fabric cutter
  • GO! Qube Mix & Match 10-inch Block, model 55797, or another documented size if intentionally making a scaled version
  • Appropriate cutting mats
  • The archive’s die-cutting material-requirement PDF
  • Optional 2 1/2-inch strip cutter model 55017
  • Optional 3-inch strip cutter model 55084
  • Fabric, sewing, pressing, and finishing supplies

Do not purchase fabric from the color list alone if the archive’s material requirements specify quantities or cuts that you have not reviewed. The named colors describe the palette; the project’s downloadable requirements are the place to confirm what you need for your selected cutting method.

A sensible way to work through the project

  1. Open the archive and download every installment. Save the six block PDFs, finishing instructions, and the correct material-requirement sheet.
  2. Decide on scale. Use the 10-inch Qube or rotary-cutting instructions for the documented full-size version. Choose a smaller Qube only if you are intentionally making a scaled quilt.
  3. Build a color map. Assign fabrics to Ruby, Emerald, Amethyst, Topaz, Rose Quartz, and Sapphire, then check contrast in both color and grayscale.
  4. Separate fabrics by block month. Keep each gemstone family in its own labeled container or project bag.
  5. Choose the cutting method before cutting. Rotary cutting and die cutting have different material lists and workflows.
  6. Make one block section at a time. Press consistently and compare completed units with the relevant pattern before moving to the next month.
  7. Assemble only after checking the full layout. A design wall or floor layout helps identify misplaced color families and orientation errors.
  8. Follow the finishing PDF for the final assembly. Do not substitute full-size finishing measurements for a smaller Qube version without recalculating.

What GemTones is—and is not—for beginners

The sources establish the pattern sequence, fabric collections, dimensions, and cutting options, but they do not assign GemTones a formal skill-level rating. It is therefore more useful to judge your readiness by the techniques in the individual PDFs than by calling the whole project beginner-friendly or advanced.

A quilter comfortable with accurate cutting, seam allowances, pressing, block orientation, and assembling a large quilt top will have a clearer starting point. If those skills are new, make a test unit from scrap fabric first and read all six instructions before buying the complete fabric selection. The archive format lets you inspect the project before committing to the full-size version.

Historical magazine connection

American Patchwork & Quilting is part of GemTones’ original publishing context, and the April 2025 issue carried the Topaz installment. The magazine is not necessary for accessing the main pattern archive identified by this research, so readers should treat a back issue as an optional historical source rather than a requirement. Verify current availability if you are looking for that issue or a related subscription.

Current-status check before you start

  • Confirm that the AllPeopleQuilt project page still opens and that all seven PDF groups are available.
  • Download the rotary-cutting or die-cutting material list before shopping.
  • Check whether the listed Cottage Cloth and Cottage Cloth II colors are currently available.
  • Confirm the contents and compatibility of any AccuQuilt equipment before purchase.
  • Decide whether you want the documented 70 1/2 × 93-inch version or a smaller interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GemTones still an active block-of-the-month program in 2026?

No. The monthly program ended after its 2024–2025 run. The patterns were still available free in the AllPeopleQuilt archive during the research for this article, but current access should be checked rather than assumed to be permanent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an AccuQuilt cutter to make GemTones?

No. The project supports conventional rotary cutting. AccuQuilt is an optional die-cutting route. The designer specifically named the GO! Qube Mix & Match 10-inch Block, model 55797, for the full-size version.

What size are the GemTones blocks?

Using the 10-inch Qube setup described by Lori Miller, the blocks finish at 20 inches square. A smaller 8-inch or 9-inch Qube produces smaller blocks, and the overall quilt dimensions and finishing measurements will need to be adjusted.

Are the original GemTones fabrics still available?

The project specifies Cottage Cloth and Cottage Cloth II by Renee Nanneman for Andover Fabrics, but the research does not establish current production or inventory for every listed color. Check retailers and compare swatches before substituting or matching the palette.

The Bottom Line

GemTones is worth approaching as a free archived quilt-along: download the six block patterns and finishing instructions from AllPeopleQuilt, choose rotary cutting or the optional AccuQuilt route, and plan the gemstone color families before cutting. The documented full-size version uses 20-inch blocks and finishes at 70 1/2 × 93 inches, while smaller Qube sizes create a scaled interpretation rather than the original dimensions.
