To draw in an Instagram chat, open the Instagram mobile app, enter a DM, tap the + beside the message box, choose Draw, doodle over the conversation, and tap Send. If Draw is missing, updating the app may help—but access can also depend on your account, device, region, or the particular conversation.

How to draw directly in an Instagram chat
- Update Instagram from the Apple App Store or Google Play, if an update is available.
- Open Instagram and tap the Messages icon.
- Open the one-to-one or group conversation where you want to draw.
- Tap the + button beside the message composer.
- Choose Draw from the expanded menu.
- Select a brush, drawing style, and color if those controls appear.
- Draw over the visible chat screen. You can make a doodle, circle a message, add an arrow, or write a short handwritten note.
- Tap Send to post the drawing in the conversation.
The + → Draw route is the currently reported path, but Instagram’s interface can vary by account and app version. The feature was reported as receiving a broader rollout in October 2025, although that does not mean every account has the same control today. Social Media Today reported on the rollout, and an independent demonstration shows the workflow.
What Instagram’s DM Draw tool does
Draw lets you make a freehand mark over the conversation interface itself. It is designed for quick visual communication rather than typed handwriting recognition, photo editing, or professional illustration.
After you send it, the drawing is associated with that conversation rather than posted publicly to your profile, Feed, or Stories. It is best understood as a conversational overlay or decoration. New messages may cover parts of it or make it less prominent, so it should not be treated as a permanent, high-resolution artwork or a dependable image archive.
Instagram has not clearly documented every detail of the feature’s retention, replay, export, notification, or screenshot behavior. Avoid assuming that a drawing is permanently saved in the chat’s media gallery.

Draw in a chat versus draw on a photo
“Draw in Instagram DMs” can refer to two different actions:
| What you want to do | Correct workflow |
|---|---|
| Doodle over the conversation screen | Open the chat, tap +, then choose Draw. |
| Annotate a photo or video | Capture or select the media, open Instagram’s media editor, and use the available markup or drawing controls before sending. |
| Send a polished drawing made elsewhere | Create it in a drawing or markup app, save it as an image, then attach it through the chat’s media controls. |
Instagram officially supports sending photos and videos in chats, and it separately documents disappearing photos and videos. Those are different message types from the chat-screen Draw overlay. The exact position of drawing controls in the photo or video editor can vary by device and Instagram version. See Instagram’s help page for sending messages and media and its help page for disappearing photos and videos.

Practical ways to use Draw in DMs
- Point something out: circle a message, photo detail, location, or item in a shared plan.
- Add emphasis: draw an arrow, underline, exclamation mark, or spoiler bar.
- Send a quick reaction: sketch a smiley face, heart, symbol, or other visual response.
- Write a brief note: add a few handwritten words without composing a full text message.
- Play a simple game: use the chat as a surface for tic-tac-toe, guessing games, or quick sketches.
- Annotate an idea: mark up a shared plan or explain where someone should look.
For detailed artwork, use a dedicated drawing app and send the finished image as a normal photo. The in-chat tool is intended for fast annotations and playful conversation, not full illustration work.
Draw is missing from my Instagram chat
Not seeing Draw does not necessarily mean you are using the wrong app or missing a hidden setting. Feature access can vary with the Instagram version, phone and operating system, account-level rollout, region, conversation type, message-request status, or a temporary server-side change. User reports also indicate that two accounts on the same phone may not receive new features at the same time; this is anecdotal, not a published Instagram rollout rule.
Try these steps in order:
- Check the + menu. Draw may not appear as a permanent brush icon. Open a chat and expand the + beside the composer.
- Update Instagram. Install the latest available version from the official app store. An update is a sensible compatibility check, not a guaranteed unlock.
- Restart the app and phone. Force-close Instagram, reopen it, and restart the device.
- Try another conversation. Test both a one-to-one chat and a group chat if available. A missing control in one conversation may be a conversation-specific limitation or bug.
- Try another account on the same phone. If Draw appears there, the difference may be account-level availability rather than your device.
- Check whether the chat is still a message request. Instagram can limit communication with people who do not follow you until a request is accepted. That does not prove Draw is disabled in every request, but request-state chats are a plausible compatibility edge case. Instagram explains message requests and related controls in its messaging guidance and Message controls settings.
- Test the connection. If Draw appears but sending fails, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and try again. Do not repeatedly tap Send while the app is unresponsive, since the interface may catch up later.
- Report the problem. Use Instagram’s in-app reporting flow and include your phone model, operating-system version, Instagram version, account type, affected chat type, and a screen recording if possible. Instagram provides guidance for reporting messages and chats, but support may not be able to manually activate a feature that is still rolling out.
Do not rely on modified Instagram clients, “feature unlock” services, or unofficial apps. They can create privacy and account-security risks without reliably enabling Draw. There is also no reliable evidence that joining a beta program will activate the feature for a particular account.
If a drawing disappears or fails to send
A disappearing or hard-to-see drawing does not automatically mean it was deleted. Because Draw behaves like an overlay rather than a conventional photo attachment, new chat content may obscure it, or the app may fail to render or synchronize the layer correctly.
Try reopening the conversation, testing another chat, checking your connection, restarting Instagram, and installing any available update. Do not assume that an overlay can always be recovered from the chat’s media gallery.
Can you delete a drawing?
If the drawing appears as an individual sent item, press and hold it and look for Unsend, as you would with other Instagram messages. The exact menu may vary with the current app version and message type, so this is the practical control to try rather than a guarantee about every Draw implementation.

- 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
- 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. - 【Works On Capacitive Touch Screens】Compatible with iPad, iPad Air/mini, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android tablets, Kindle and smartphones. Also works over most screen protectors — glide, no scratch. The stylus is used to replace your fingers on a touchscreen, Avoid rubbing your fingers and leaving fingerprints on touchscreen devices. If it cannot be used for writing on some devices, This may be due to limitations in the settings of touchscreen devices. Instagram notes that deleted, unsent, or edited messages may still be included when a surrounding conversation is reported. Do not use Unsend as a promise that no record can ever exist in a report or notification context.
Can you draw in Instagram DMs on a computer?
Draw is primarily presented as a mobile-app feature. The surfaced official documentation does not provide a desktop procedure for it, so use the Instagram app on iPhone or Android if you need the best chance of finding the control. Do not assume that a feature available in the mobile composer is also available at Instagram.com. Instagram explicitly distinguishes some mobile-only chat media features—for example, disappearing photos and videos—from computer messaging, but that documentation does not establish a universal desktop rule for Draw.

| Tool | Purpose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Draw | Quick freehand marks over the chat | A conversational overlay for doodles, arrows, notes, and reactions. |
| GIFs and stickers | Ready-made visual reactions | Inserted through the chat composer; Instagram documents these separately from Draw. |
| Photo or video message | Send captured or selected media | May offer separate editing or markup controls before sending. |
| Disappearing photo or video | Send media with viewing controls | A distinct feature with its own behavior; it is not the same as a chat drawing. |
Instagram’s official help resources cover GIFs and stickers in chats, as well as ordinary and disappearing media. They do not provide a dedicated, fully detailed Help Center procedure for the Draw control.
