Use Insert > Shapes for diagrams, arrows, boxes, and flowcharts; use Draw > Pen for handwriting, highlighting, or freehand ink. For an editable hand-drawn line, choose Insert > Shapes > Lines > Scribble or Freeform. The Draw tab and some ink tools vary by Word edition, subscription, version, and device.
The best method depends on whether you need a standard shape, editable freeform object, digital ink, or an image made elsewhere.
Choose the right drawing method

Word is useful for simple drawings and document annotations, but it is not a full illustration application. If you need layers, advanced brush control, sophisticated vector editing, or a large finished illustration, create the artwork in a dedicated drawing app and insert the result into Word.

Draw a standard shape in Word for Mac
For most diagrams, Insert > Shapes is the most reliable option. Microsoft lists Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac and Word 2024 for Mac among the desktop editions that support adding shapes; labels and controls can vary slightly by build.
- Open the document and click where you want the drawing.
- Select Insert > Shapes.
- Choose a shape, line, arrow, callout, or flowchart symbol.
- Click and drag in the document to draw it at the required size.
- With the object selected, use the Shape Format or Format tab to change its appearance and position.
Hold Shift while drawing to constrain proportions—for example, to make a circle rather than an oval. For connected objects, choose a connector rather than an ordinary line. A drawing canvas is optional for ordinary Word shapes, but can help organize several objects and connectors in a flowchart. Add text inside a shape
Select the shape and start typing, or use its text option if displayed. Format the text like ordinary Word text. To control the space around it or change text direction, open the shape’s formatting controls. Microsoft documents these options in its guide to text direction and position in shapes and text boxes.
Draw a freehand line with Scribble or Freeform
Scribble creates a continuous, pen-like stroke. Freeform is better when you want to combine straight and curved sections or create an irregular closed shape. Both remain editable Word shape objects rather than becoming a flat image.

Use Scribble
- Select Insert > Shapes.
- Open the Lines section and choose Scribble.
- Click and drag with the mouse or trackpad to draw.
- Release when the stroke is complete. You can also double-click to end an open stroke.
Use Freeform
- Select Insert > Shapes > Lines > Freeform.
- Click to create straight segments.
- Click and drag to create curved segments.
- Double-click to leave the line open, or click near its starting point to close the shape.
This approach is useful for a simple signature-like mark, irregular outline, or sketch that you may want to edit later. It is less suitable for a complex illustration: a mouse or trackpad can produce uneven geometry, and a complicated freeform object can become difficult to refine. Use the Draw tab for handwriting and ink
If your Word installation includes the Draw tab, it provides pens, pencils, and highlighters for digital ink.
- Select Draw in the Ribbon.
- Choose a pen, pencil, or highlighter.
- Open the pen’s options to choose a color and thickness.
- Draw in the document with your available input device.
- Press Esc when finished to stop inking and return to normal selection mode.
Microsoft’s current documentation describes five pen thickness settings from 0.25 mm to 3.5 mm, 16 solid colors, additional colors through More Colors, and extra effects for supported Microsoft 365 subscribers. Show the Draw tab if it is missing
- Confirm that you are using the desktop Word app rather than Word for the web.
- Open Word’s Ribbon customization settings and check whether Draw is available to enable. The settings interface can differ by Mac version.
- If Draw is not listed, update Word and confirm that your edition supports the ink feature you want.
- If you only need a diagram or geometric shape, use Insert > Shapes; it does not depend on the Draw tab.
Enabling the tab does not guarantee that every ink tool is available in every edition or on every device. Microsoft’s guidance on editing with natural gestures describes Ribbon customization.

Erase ink
For Draw-tab ink, select Draw > Eraser. Open the eraser menu if you need a different option, then drag over the ink you want to remove. Microsoft documents three eraser options in its ink workflow. Erasing ink does not replace deleting or editing a standard inserted shape.
Draw with a Mac trackpad
Microsoft documents a Draw with Trackpad mode for Word for Microsoft 365 for Mac. When available:
- Open the Draw tab.
- Turn on Draw with Trackpad.
- Use one finger on the trackpad to draw.
- Use two fingers to move the on-screen drawing window.
- Hold Command for more precise positioning.
- Press a key to leave precision-draw mode.
Microsoft states that this workflow requires a trackpad and Office for Mac version 16.22.19021100 or later, and identifies it as a subscriber feature. Check your Word installation because availability can depend on the edition, subscription, app version, and device. Microsoft’s trackpad drawing guide contains the documented workflow.
A mouse works for standard shapes, Scribble, Freeform, and some ink workflows, but it is usually uncomfortable for detailed handwriting. A MacBook does not have a built-in touchscreen, so an Apple Pencil cannot directly draw on its display. For pen input, use a compatible separate device, draw on an iPad, or create the artwork elsewhere and insert it into Word.
Edit, format, and position a drawing
Change the appearance
Select a shape or freeform object and use the Shape Format or Format controls:
- Shape Fill: choose a solid color, no fill, or—where supported—a gradient, picture, or texture.
- Shape Outline: change the color, weight, or dash style, or remove the outline.
- Shape Effects: add effects such as shadow, glow, or 3-D styling when available.
- Size: enter exact height and width values.
- Rotate: drag the rotation handle. Hold Shift to constrain rotation to 15-degree increments.
Microsoft’s instructions cover rotating and flipping objects and formatting drawing objects.

Edit the points of a freeform shape
- Select the freeform object.
- Open Shape Format or Format.
- Choose Edit Shape > Edit Points.
- Drag vertices or handles to refine the outline.
Microsoft also documents adding a point by holding Control while clicking the outline and deleting a point by holding Control while clicking the point. Keyboard behavior can vary with Mac keyboard mapping and Word version, so use the on-screen point controls if a modifier does not behave as expected. See Microsoft’s Freeform and Scribble guide.
Move a drawing without disturbing the text
If a drawing will not move freely, it may be set to In Line with Text. That layout treats the object much like an oversized character.
- Select the object.
- Open Wrap Text or the layout options.
- Choose Square, Tight, Behind Text, or In Front of Text, depending on the intended layout.
- Drag the object to reposition it.
Inline objects can lack some alignment controls. Once the object uses a floating wrap setting, use Shape Format > Arrange to bring it forward, send it backward, align it, distribute it, or group it. Microsoft explains this relationship in its guide to aligning and arranging objects.
Convert hand-drawn ink into a clean shape
Where the feature is available, turn on Ink to Shape from the Draw tab before drawing. Word then converts eligible handwriting or geometry into the closest standard Office shape. You can format the result using the normal shape controls. Turn Ink to Shape off when you want ordinary freehand ink instead.
This is a compatible Microsoft 365 or Office feature rather than a universal promise for every Word for Mac installation. If the control is missing, use Insert > Shapes directly. See Microsoft’s Ink to Shape documentation.

Signatures and existing drawings
For a simple visual signature, you can draw with ink, use Scribble, or insert a scanned signature image. A drawn mark is not automatically a legally valid electronic signature. Contracts, regulated documents, and business workflows may require an approved signing service and your organization’s procedures.

An image preserves the appearance of complex artwork, but it will not provide the same point-by-point editability as a Word shape.

Which Word option should you use?
- Choose Insert > Shapes for clean diagrams, arrows, process maps, and technical illustrations.
- Choose Scribble for a continuous pen-like line that remains an editable Word object.
- Choose Freeform when your outline needs both straight and curved segments.
- Choose Draw > Pen for handwriting, highlighting, and natural annotation.
- Choose an inserted image for complex artwork or a drawing whose exact appearance matters more than editability.
Microsoft 365 subscriptions may expose more current ink features than perpetual Office editions, but buying Microsoft 365 solely to draw a basic arrow or box is usually unnecessary. If you already have Word, start with the drawing method your document requires.

Why can’t I find the Draw tab in Word for Mac?
Check that you are using desktop Word, then look in Ribbon customization settings for Draw. If it is not listed, update Word and check whether your edition supports the ink feature you need. Use Insert > Shapes for diagrams even when Draw is unavailable.
Can I draw with a mouse in Word for Mac?
