The small image that represents a website in a browser or search result is usually called a favicon or site icon. To add one, create a recognizable square image, host it at a stable public URL, and reference it with a link element in the homepage’s head.
For example, add <link rel=”icon” href=”/favicon.ico”> inside the homepage’s head. Google Search may show the icon, but following its guidelines does not guarantee that it will appear.
What does “URL logo” mean?
“URL logo” is not the usual technical term. People may mean a favicon or site icon, a public URL for an image file, a larger website logo, a logo in structured data, a social-sharing image, or a logo placed inside a QR code. This guide focuses on creating and adding a favicon.

Design a favicon that works at small sizes
A detailed, horizontal painting-business logo may become hard to recognize when shown small. Use a simplified, square version of the brand mark and make sure it remains legible at small display sizes.

Choose an image format
Format support depends on the service or browser using the icon. Google Search lists the following supported formats; this list is not a complete browser compatibility guide.
| Format | Google Search | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| BMP, GIF, ICO, PNG, JPEG, PPM, TIFF | Supported | Choose a format suitable for your icon and hosting setup, then test it in the contexts that matter to your site. |
A straightforward example is an ICO file referenced as <link rel=”icon” href=”/favicon.ico”>. Google also accepts other formats in its documented list.

Create and host the icon file
Make a square icon that represents your painting business, then upload it to a public location on your website or a CDN. Keep its URL stable and ensure the file can be fetched without a login or blocked request. For example, the path could be /favicon.ico.
If you use an online design tool, check its export quality, watermarking, and commercial-use terms before using the resulting image.
Add the favicon to a coded website
- Create and publish the icon file at a stable, public URL.
- Add a link element with rel=”icon” inside the homepage’s head. Set its href to the icon’s relative or absolute URL.
- Publish the homepage and check that the icon file and homepage are not blocked from crawling.
For example, the head can contain <link rel=”icon” href=”/favicon.ico”>. Google permits relative and absolute icon URLs, including URLs hosted on a CDN.

Google’s favicon guidance applies to Google Search, not to every browser or platform. To be eligible under that guidance:
- Put a rel=”icon” link in the homepage’s head.
- Use a square image at least 8 × 8 pixels; Google recommends an image larger than 48 × 48 pixels.
- Keep the favicon URL stable.
- Make sure Googlebot can crawl the homepage and Googlebot-Image can crawl the icon.
Google uses one favicon per hostname-level site. A subdomain such as news.example.com can have its own icon, while a subdirectory such as example.com/news does not get a separate Search favicon from the hostname’s homepage icon. Google says recrawling and processing may take several days to several weeks. As Google Search Central states, “A favicon isn’t guaranteed to appear in Google Search results, even if all guidelines are met.”

Troubleshoot a missing or outdated icon
The icon does not appear
- Check the icon URL and filename, including capitalization.
- Open the image URL directly to confirm it is public and returns the icon.
- Check that the rel=”icon” link is in the homepage’s head.
- Confirm that the homepage and icon are not blocked from Google crawling.
- Wait for Google to recrawl and process the homepage; it may take several days to several weeks.
Google does not guarantee that an eligible favicon will appear in Search results.
The icon is hard to recognize
Simplify the artwork and check it at small display sizes. Tiny lettering, fine details, or a logo that is not square can make the icon difficult to recognize.
