Yes—Google Slides lets you draw in two different ways. For a mark that stays on the slide, open the toolbar’s Line dropdown and choose Scribble. For temporary markup while presenting, start Slideshow, open Options or More, and choose Enable pen tool. Presentation annotations disappear when the slideshow ends.

Choose the right drawing method

What you need Best method Does it remain after presenting?
A permanent handwritten mark Line → Scribble Yes
A straight pointer Line → Arrow Yes
To highlight something while speaking Presentation pen tool No
A flowchart or polished diagram Shapes and connectors, Google Drawings, or a diagramming tool Usually, depending on the workflow

The important distinction is that Scribble creates an editable slide object, while the presentation pen creates a temporary annotation. Google documents both workflows in its drawing help and presentation help.

  1. Open your presentation in Google Slides.
  2. Select the slide where you want to draw.
  3. In the toolbar, open the Line dropdown. Depending on the interface or language, it may appear as a line icon or be labeled Select line.
  4. Choose Scribble.
  5. Click and hold on the slide, then drag to draw.
  6. Release the mouse or trackpad to finish the stroke.
  7. Click elsewhere or press Esc when you are done drawing.

Your mark becomes a selectable line object. You can move, resize, recolor, rotate, or delete it like other objects on the slide. Scribble is useful for handwriting-style notes, circles, underlines, rough sketches, and quick annotations.

If you cannot find the tool, use Google Slides’ tool finder: press Alt + / on Windows or ChromeOS, or Option + / on Mac, then search for the drawing or line tools. The current tool list and behavior are described by Google’s drawing documentation.

Draw straight lines, arrows, curves, and connectors

  • Line: for a simple straight stroke.
  • Arrow: for pointing clearly to text, images, or chart elements.
  • Elbow connector: for right-angled diagram connections.
  • Curved connector: for curved connections between objects.
  • Curve: for a smoother custom path.
  • Polyline: for an angular path with multiple points.
  • Scribble: for freehand drawing.

For a straight line, arrow, or connector, choose the tool and click-drag across the slide. For a curve or polyline, click at each point where the path should change direction, then double-click or complete the path to finish.

Use Arrow when the purpose is to direct attention. Use Connectors when lines should relate shapes in a diagram. Use Polyline for controlled angular paths, and Scribble when a rough, handwritten appearance is intentional.

Format and edit a drawing

Click the drawing to select it, then use the toolbar to adjust the available formatting options:

  • Line color
  • Line weight or thickness
  • Dash style
  • Arrowheads, where applicable

Drag the blue handles to resize the object. Drag the object itself to reposition it, and use its rotation handle to change its angle. According to Google’s drawing guidance, holding Shift while rotating constrains rotation to 15-degree increments.

For a projected presentation, use a thicker, high-contrast stroke. A single accent color is usually clearer than several competing colors. If a circle looks messy, replace it with an arrow or a shape-based highlight.

Delete a drawing or undo it

To remove a complete drawing:

  1. Click the drawing to select it.
  2. Press Delete or Backspace, or right-click and choose Delete if that option appears.

To reverse the last action, use Ctrl + Z on Windows or ChromeOS, or Command + Z on Mac. Google lists these and other shortcuts in its Google Slides keyboard-shortcuts guide.

A Scribble is an object rather than a pixel-based canvas. If you need to erase only part of a stroke, the simplest approach is usually to delete and redraw it. For easier editing, make a complex mark from several shorter Scribble strokes.

How to draw while presenting

Use the presentation pen when you want to mark up a slide live—for example, to circle a chart value, show a solution, or connect ideas during a lesson or meeting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the presentation in a desktop browser.
  2. Click Slideshow.
  3. Move the pointer to display the presentation controls.
  4. At the bottom left, open Options or More.
  5. Select Enable pen tool.
  6. Click and drag on the current slide to annotate.

Use the pen controls to choose a color. To remove marks from the current slide, choose Erase and then Erase all. To stop annotating, choose Pen tool → Turn off or use Options → More → Disable pen tool.

These annotations are temporary. Google states that they disappear after the slideshow ends, so do not use the presentation pen for artwork or notes that must remain in the file. For permanent content, exit presentation mode and use Line → Scribble, shapes, or an inserted drawing.

Draw on Google Slides with an iPhone or iPad

Google’s documented iPhone and iPad workflow is for drawing during a presentation:

  1. Open the presentation in the Google Slides app.
  2. Tap Present.
  3. Tap Draw or the drawing/editing control.
  4. Use your finger to draw on the presented slide.
  5. Tap Clear drawing to remove the marks or change slides.
  6. Tap the drawing control again to leave drawing mode.

See Google’s iPhone and iPad presentation instructions for the mobile controls. Mobile editing features are not necessarily identical to the desktop Scribble workflow. Android controls can vary by device and app version, so check the presentation toolbar rather than assuming the desktop tools are available.

When Google Slides is not the best drawing canvas

For clean diagrams: use shapes and connectors

For flowcharts, process maps, and structured diagrams, combine shapes with connectors instead of drawing everything freehand. The result is easier to read and revise, although it takes longer than making a quick Scribble.

For a larger custom illustration: use Google Drawings

Google Drawings gives you a larger workspace for lines, shapes, text boxes, and images. Create one from Google Drive with New → More → Google Drawings, build the illustration, and insert it into Slides using the supported Drive workflow. Google documents inserting drawings and updating linked drawings in its drawing help.

This is a better choice for reusable illustrations, technical diagrams, and artwork that needs more room. It adds a separate file and workflow, so Scribble remains faster for a one-off mark.

For advanced or collaborative diagrams: consider a diagramming tool

Tools such as draw.io, SmartDraw, and Cacoo can provide templates, structured connectors, export formats, and collaboration features. Google’s Workspace Marketplace lists diagramming applications, but availability and permissions may differ for school or business accounts. Some tools may also require an account or payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For classroom marking, Magic Annotate & Mark is a niche Marketplace option that supports mouse or touchscreen annotations and symbols such as ticks and crosses. It is not necessary for ordinary arrows, circles, or handwritten marks.

Troubleshooting

“I can’t find Scribble.”

Make sure you are editing the slide in a desktop browser and opening the Line dropdown—not the Shape menu. A narrow browser window may hide toolbar controls. You can also use the tool finder with Alt + / or Option + /.

“My drawing disappeared.”

First press Undo. Then check whether the object is behind another object, outside the visible slide area, or using a line color that blends into the background. If the mark disappeared after you ended the slideshow, you probably used the temporary presentation pen rather than Scribble.

“The pen tool is missing.”

Confirm that the presentation is running in slideshow mode, move the pointer to reveal the bottom toolbar, and open Options or More. The desktop and iOS presentation workflows are documented separately by Google. Account, browser, device, or organization settings can also affect what appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“My line is too faint.”

Increase the line weight and choose a color with strong contrast against the slide background. For emphasis, an arrow or filled shape may communicate more clearly than a thin freehand stroke.

“I cannot draw accurately with a mouse.”

Zoom in, use a touchscreen or stylus where supported, or switch from Scribble to Curve, Polyline, shapes, or connectors. If precision matters, create the artwork in Google Drawings or a dedicated diagramming application.

“The drawing is behind another object.”

Use the slide’s arrange or layer controls to bring it forward, or temporarily move the surrounding object. If you are unsure which object is selected, click an empty area and select the mark again.

Bottom line

For a permanent freehand drawing, use Line → Scribble. For a straight pointer, choose Arrow. For live emphasis during a slideshow, use Options/More → Enable pen tool, but remember that those annotations disappear when the presentation ends. Move to Google Drawings or a diagramming tool only when you need more control, space, or structure than Google Slides’ built-in tools provide.
