To draw orthographic views, show the object in separate, aligned 2D views—usually front, top, and side—so its shape and dimensions can be read clearly. To make a basic isometric sketch, draw vertical edges vertically and the two receding directions at 30° to the horizontal, then build the object from its overall width, depth, and height. Use the orthographic views to communicate features and measurements; use the isometric view to help readers picture the form.
What orthographic and isometric drawings show
An orthographic, or multiview, drawing represents a three-dimensional object through separate two-dimensional projections onto planes. The views are arranged so that corresponding edges and measurements can be compared. ISO 5456-2:1996 describes orthographic representation as the most widely used method for representing technical objects across fields such as mechanical, electrical, and construction drawing; check the current applicable standard before using a drawing for production work. An isometric drawing presents a single pictorial view, typically showing three faces at once. That makes overall form and spatial relationships easier to see, but a chosen viewpoint can hide rear features or interior geometry. How to draw orthographic views
- Choose the front direction. Orient the object so its most recognizable shape and important features are clear. Consider which face is most useful for dimensioning.
- Draw the front view first. Sketch the visible outline and features as seen straight on. Keep the view large enough to add details and dimensions legibly.
- Project aligned top and side views. The top and front views share the same width; the front and side views share the same height. Align corresponding features so a reader can trace them between views. The TeachEngineering activity uses this relationship to teach orthographic views. TeachEngineering: Orthographic Drawings
- Add only the views needed. A simple object may be clear in two views. Add a third view or another suitable view if a feature or shape cannot be determined without it.
- Distinguish visible and hidden edges. Use solid lines for visible edges and dashed lines for edges hidden from that view, following the convention required for the drawing. Check that shared widths and heights agree across aligned views.
- Dimension the object without unnecessary duplication. Include the measurements needed to make or interpret it. Redundant dimensions can clutter a drawing and create conflicting tolerance chains. MIT OpenCourseWare: Engineering Drawing
How to convert orthographic views to an isometric drawing
- Set up three axes. Draw one vertical axis and two receding axes, one at 30° above the horizontal and the other at 30° below it. In a basic classroom isometric drawing, these represent height, width, and depth.
- Make an enclosing box. Use the object’s overall width, depth, and height to sketch a box around its form. Transfer measurements along the corresponding axes.
- Build the visible form. Add or remove parts from the box, using measurements along axis-parallel directions. Keep vertical edges vertical and edges parallel to the receding axes parallel to those axes.
- Compare the sketch with the orthographic views. Confirm that each feature has the same position and dimensions in all views where it is visible. Do not rely on the isometric view alone to explain hidden or internal geometry.
In the basic isometric-drawing convention, lengths parallel to the three isometric axes are drawn at their scale lengths. This is distinct from formal isometric projection, where the three principal axes appear at equal 120° angles and measurements use an isometric scale to account for foreshortening. When to add another view or a section
Add information when one view leaves room for more than one interpretation. A rear hole, for example, may be hidden in the chosen isometric viewpoint; show it in an orthographic view where it is visible, or use hidden lines if those communicate it clearly. When hidden lines make interior geometry difficult to understand, a section view can show the cut-through shape. The number of views depends on the object: use the minimum set that communicates every required feature unambiguously. MIT OpenCourseWare: Engineering Drawing
Which drawing should you use?

Practice materials and production-drawing limits

These fundamentals are useful for learning and sketching, but they do not establish which projection convention or standard applies to a particular production drawing. First-angle or third-angle projection requirements can depend on the jurisdiction, customer, or organization.
