Mike Libby’s Insect Lab is an art practice that combines preserved insect specimens with mechanical parts to create small, specimen-like sculptures. The work sets the intricate forms of insects against visible pieces of human machinery—a contrast that can feel both natural and futuristic.
What is Mike Libby’s Insect Lab?
Insect Lab is the name associated with Libby’s sculptural works, not a series of digital insect illustrations or a standardized product line. Historical coverage describes one-of-a-kind pieces in which real insects are paired with mechanical components and displayed like specimens.
Libby told Joseph Caputo of Smithsonian Magazine in 2009 that the sculptures were “insects that appear plucked from a future in which artificial intelligence has triumphed over the natural world.” That image captures the central tension: a living form preserved and made uncanny by visible human-made mechanisms.

How did the project begin?
Smithsonian Magazine reported that Libby began the project in 1999 after finding a dead beetle beneath a vending machine. He paired it with parts from a Mickey Mouse watch, turning the accidental discovery into the first work in an ongoing body of sculpture.

In a 2006 WIRED article, Libby recalled finding an intact beetle and then locating an old wristwatch because the insect already seemed like “a little mechanical device.” The origin story helps explain why the work emphasizes resemblance and juxtaposition rather than hiding its construction.
What materials and techniques appear in the sculptures?
Libby told Smithsonian Magazine that he tended to use brass, steel, and parts from watches, typewriters, and sewing machines. A contemporaneous 2006 WIRED account also mentions recycled components from old watches and electronics, including beepers and television remotes. These are examples drawn from different works, not a fixed materials list for every sculpture.

Libby said he preferred visible moving parts to circuits and LEDs. A spinning or turning component makes motion—and the possibility of failure—legible to a viewer in a way that concealed electronics may not. The machinery is therefore not just decoration: its exposed mechanics shape how the sculpture reads.

Which insects appear, and how large are the works?
Historical accounts mention beetles, butterflies, spiders, cicadas, dragonflies, wasps, bees, grasshoppers, and a ladybug. The species, degree of mechanical modification, display format, and scale vary from piece to piece; the coverage does not establish a standard model range.
One specific beetle sculpture described in Smithsonian Magazine’s 2009 profile had an approximately 8.5-inch wingspan. That measurement belongs to that individual work, not to Insect Lab sculptures generally.

Can you buy or commission an Insect Lab sculpture now?
Coverage from 2006 to 2009 described work as available online or through the studio, and reported sales or commissions during that period. Those historical accounts do not establish whether the studio is currently operating, accepting commissions, or offering pieces at particular prices.
