The fastest way to extend a background in Photoshop without stretching the subject is to use Generative Expand with the Crop tool. It enlarges the canvas, then generates matching content in the new area. The original subject stays at its existing size and position. For a non-generative option, use Canvas Size followed by Content-Aware Fill.

Before you start
- Decide the final dimensions or aspect ratio, such as 4:5, 9:16, or 16:9.
- Keep important text and logos on separate editable layers whenever possible.
- Save a copy of the original: choose File > Save As or File > Save a Copy. You can also duplicate a layer with Ctrl+J on Windows or Command+J on macOS.
- Remember that Generative Expand may use generative credits. Adobe’s current credit treatment can depend on the selected model, Photoshop version, plan, and policy.
Canvas means the total editable area of the document. The image area is the original pixels. Changing the canvas adds room around those pixels; changing image size resamples the entire document.
How to extend a background in Photoshop
1. Open the image and protect the original
Open the image in Photoshop and work on a duplicate or PSD copy. This makes it easy to compare generated results with the untouched file and recover from a poor expansion.
If your image includes a headline, logo, or product label, keep it separate from the background. Generative tools are not reliable at creating readable typography, so add or preserve text manually.

Select the Crop tool from the toolbar, or press C using Photoshop’s standard shortcut set.
The Crop tool is important because this workflow expands the canvas instead of scaling the existing image. Using Image > Image Size would enlarge the subject, background, and pixels together, which is not what you want.

3. Drag the crop handles beyond the image
Drag a side, corner, or several edges outward to create the space you need. To extend only one side, move only that edge. For example, drag the top edge upward to add headroom to a portrait, or drag the right edge outward to create room for advertising copy.
If your Photoshop version provides aspect-ratio controls in the Options bar, set the target ratio first. This is useful when converting a horizontal image to a vertical social post or creating a banner.

Large additions are harder to make believable, especially around people, buildings, text, furniture, railings, and repeating patterns. For complicated images, expanding one edge at a time gives you better control and makes it easier to reject or repair one problem area.
4. Choose Generative Expand
When the crop boundary is outside the original image, choose Generative Expand from the Contextual Task Bar.
If the bar is not visible, try Window > Contextual Task Bar. Current Photoshop documentation may also show a model picker, including Firefly models. The available names and order can differ between releases.

5. Leave the prompt blank or describe the background
For a simple, continuous background, leave the prompt blank and select Generate. Photoshop will infer the likely continuation from the existing image. This is often a good starting point for skies, plain walls, floors, water, foliage, clouds, and uncomplicated gradients.
Use a short prompt when the background needs specific direction. Describe the area being added, not a new version of the subject:

Keep prompts literal and avoid requesting extra people, props, logos, or lettering. Match the original lighting, perspective, color, and depth of field. Adobe describes Generative Expand as extending image boundaries while maintaining the source image’s style and context, but it can still produce artifacts or mismatched edges.
6. Compare variations and refine the result
Review the generated options in the Properties panel and choose the version with the most convincing edge continuity, lighting, perspective, texture, and focus. Adobe also documents generating additional variations after changing the prompt in its guide to Generate Similar.
Inspect the result at 100% to 200% zoom, then check it again at the intended display size. Look for:

- Repeated objects or duplicated body parts
- Unwanted faces, hands, or limbs
- Wavy architectural lines and warped perspective
- Visible seams or abrupt texture changes
- Halos around the original subject
- Incorrect shadows or lighting direction
- Changes in blur, grain, or sharpness
- Malformed text or logos
If the result is poor, reduce the expansion area, generate one edge at a time, try a blank prompt, or rewrite the prompt to mention only the background. You can also repair a small defect with a layer mask, Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, Remove tool, or a small Content-Aware Fill selection.
How to extend a background for common formats
Portraits
Add modest space above the head or beside the person rather than scaling the entire photo. Keep the original subject protected and inspect hair, shoulders, fingers, and clothing edges for halos or invented details.
Instagram and other vertical posts
Set or calculate the desired 4:5 or 9:16 crop, then expand the short sides or top and bottom until the canvas reaches that ratio. Preserve the subject’s position intentionally: a little extra space above a portrait can improve the composition, while a product may need open space beside it for copy.

Extend a neutral wall, floor, or studio sweep with a short background prompt. Keep the product, label, and logo on original layers. Do not ask Generative Expand to recreate packaging text.
Landscapes
Sky, water, distant scenery, and broad ground are usually easier than buildings or strong perspective lines. For roads, floors, tables, and architecture, use smaller expansions and include a phrase such as “matching the existing perspective.”

What to do when Generative Expand looks wrong
| Problem | Practical fix |
|---|---|
| The subject is stretched | Undo and use the Crop tool with Generative Expand instead of Image Size or an ordinary transform. |
| The background contains duplicated objects | Generate a smaller area, leave the prompt blank, or describe only the background. Mask or clone away the duplicate if it is localized. |
| Perspective lines bend | Reduce the expansion, mention the existing perspective, or composite the area manually with a perspective transform. |
| The subject has a halo | Protect the original edge with a layer mask and repair it with a soft brush, Clone Stamp, or Healing Brush. |
| Color, grain, or blur does not match | Generate less area and match the prompt to the original lighting and depth of field. Apply subtle blur or grain only to the new area if needed. |
| Photoshop creates text or logos | Do not rely on generated lettering. Extend the background first, then add the typography manually on its own layer. |
| There is too much empty space | Undo or recrop. Extra canvas should support the composition, headline, product copy, or subject direction rather than simply making the image larger. |
Manual alternative: Canvas Size plus Content-Aware Fill
Use this method when you have no generative credits, work with confidential material, need deterministic editing, or are extending a simple texture or flat background.
- Choose Image > Canvas Size.
- Enter the final width and height.
- Use the Anchor controls to decide which side stays fixed.
- Confirm the new canvas.
- Select the newly empty area.
- Choose Edit > Content-Aware Fill, or use the appropriate Content-Aware Fill workflow in your Photoshop version.
- Clean up seams with Clone Stamp or Healing Brush.
Canvas Size itself does not invent realistic imagery; it only creates the added working area. Content-Aware Fill samples nearby pixels, so it can work well for broad, uncomplicated textures but may struggle with people, text, complex perspective, and distinctive objects.

When Content-Aware Scale is appropriate
Content-Aware Scale changes the scale of existing pixels while attempting to protect important content. It can be useful for a broad, relatively uniform background when a small amount of distortion is acceptable, but it is not a true background-extension tool.
Adobe’s documented workflow is to choose Select > All, then Edit > Content-Aware Scale. Adjust the reference point, scaling percentage, amount, and protection options, then drag a transform handle and commit or cancel the transform. Options may include skin-tone protection or an alpha-channel selection, and Adobe notes that the documented procedure applies when scaling a Background layer. Choose Generative Expand instead when you need genuinely new background space around a person or detailed subject. Choose manual editing when the image contains exact architectural lines, readable text, repeated patterns, or other details that must remain precise.
Why Generative Expand may be missing
If you cannot find the feature:
- Try Window > Contextual Task Bar.
- Update Photoshop through the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Confirm that you are using Photoshop desktop rather than Photoshop Elements or another Adobe application.
- Check whether your document, account, plan, region, model, or connection affects feature availability.
- Use Canvas Size and Content-Aware Fill as the fallback.
Exact controls can change between Photoshop releases, so do not assume another user will see identical model names or buttons.
Export the finished image without losing quality
- Save a PSD if you may need to revise masks, text, or generated layers.
- Keep original text and logos editable and separate from generated content.
- Confirm the final pixel dimensions and aspect ratio before export.
- Use File > Export > Export As for a web image, choosing JPEG for photographs or PNG when transparency or sharper graphic edges are needed.
- For print, follow the printer’s requested dimensions, color profile, resolution, and file format rather than relying on a generic export setting.
Generative features use Adobe’s generative-credit system. Adobe documentation has stated that Generative Expand can deduct a standard generative credit per generation, but that treatment is not necessarily permanent across plans, models, and releases. Check your current Account information and Adobe’s generative AI feature guidance before performing many generations.
