Google Arts & Culture’s Art Selfie feature compares a selfie with faces in thousands of artworks and returns portraits that look visually similar to you. It is a playful art-discovery tool—not a genealogy test, facial-identity service, or proof that you resemble an ancestor.
What is Google Art Selfie?
Art Selfie uses computer vision and machine learning to compare visual features in your selfie with faces represented in artwork collections supplied by participating museums and cultural institutions. It ranks possible matches and may show a percentage estimating visual similarity.
The result is best understood as: “This portrait looks visually similar to the submitted image.” It does not mean that the person depicted is your ancestor, that you share their ethnicity or background, or that the percentage represents a probability of identity. The available matches also depend on which portraits are included in the feature’s collections.

Google currently presents Art Selfie as globally available on its official Art Selfie page, although menus and feature availability can vary by device, platform, and app version.
How to use Art Selfie
- Install or update the app. Search for Google Arts & Culture in the Apple App Store or Google Play. On Android, confirm that the developer is Google LLC. Use the current version rather than relying on old screenshots or tutorials. Google’s Android listing was updated on June 25, 2026.
- Open Google Arts & Culture. The app is available for iPhone and Android, but the exact navigation may not be identical on both platforms.
- Tap the camera button. Look for the camera or rainbow-camera icon in the app’s home interface. If it is not immediately visible, scroll the home page or check the app’s navigation controls.
- Choose Art Selfie. Select the original portrait-matching feature and follow the camera prompt.
- Take a selfie. Use one clearly visible face, reasonable lighting, and a steady phone.
- Review the matches. The app may return one or more portraits with estimated similarity percentages.
- Open a result. Tap the artwork to learn about its title, artist, date or period, museum or collection, and—when known—the person or role represented in the portrait.

How to take a selfie that produces better matches
Google does not publish a complete set of technical photo requirements, but these practical choices can improve the chance of receiving a useful result:

- Face a window or another soft light source, avoiding strong shadows across your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Keep the phone steady and avoid motion blur.
- Use a portrait-oriented image with your face large enough in the frame.
- Start with one person rather than a group selfie.
- Remove sunglasses, masks, hats, or hair that obscures important facial features.
- Try a neutral expression, then retry with a smile or another expression for comparison.
- Test both a close-up and a slightly wider crop.
These suggestions are not guarantees. Painted, sculpted, stylized, damaged, side-profile, or partially obscured faces can produce surprising results. A close crop may provide more facial detail but can also exaggerate lens distortion or uneven lighting.
What the similarity percentage means
The percentage is an app-generated estimate of visual similarity. It is not a scientific measurement, an identity probability, or a confidence score proving that you look like a particular historical person.
Judge the result by looking at the portrait itself and by considering whether it leads to interesting art. The first-ranked match is not necessarily an objective or definitive answer. If it seems implausible, try another selfie and compare several results.

Do not confuse either feature with Art Transfer, which applies an artistic style to a photo; Art Filter, which overlays or recreates cultural objects and artworks; or the camera tool that identifies an existing artwork you photograph. If Art Selfie is missing or does not work
The feature does not appear
- Update Google Arts & Culture.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Tap the camera icon instead of searching only the home feed or the Play tab.
- Try the official Art Selfie page.
- Check Google’s current app support information or try another device if the feature remains unavailable.
Reinstalling the app may help in some cases, but it is not a guaranteed solution. Menu placement can change between app versions and operating systems.

Enable camera access for Google Arts & Culture in your phone’s operating-system settings, then reopen the feature. The setting’s exact name and location differ between iOS and Android.

The match is poor or no useful result appears
Try better lighting, a single face, a closer crop, fewer obstructions, and a new selfie with a neutral expression. In a group image, check that the app is analyzing the intended face. If results remain weak, remember that Art Selfie searches only the artwork portraits available to the feature—not every painting, sculpture, or portrait in existence.
The result seems culturally insensitive or inaccurate
A visual match can come from a different period, region, gender presentation, or cultural context. Do not infer identity or ancestry from it. Open the artwork’s information and read the available context before making claims about the depicted person.

Google’s 2018 launch explanation said that the selfie was kept only for the time required to search for matches and was not used for other purposes at that time. That is a historical, feature-specific statement—not a guarantee about every current version of the app.

The current Google Play data-safety section for the broader Google Arts & Culture app says the app may collect location, personal information, and other data types. It also says the developer declares that no data is shared with third parties and that data is encrypted in transit. These disclosures can relate to the app as a whole, including accounts, favorites, preferences, location-based functions, and other permissions.
Before uploading a personal image, check the current in-app privacy information and the listing for your platform. Avoid the unqualified claim that Google stores no selfies. The historical statement is documented in Google’s original feature explanation, while the current Android disclosure appears in the Google Play listing.
Turn the match into an art-history discovery
Do not stop at the shareable result. Open the artwork and investigate:
- the artwork’s full title and date or period;
- the artist and related works;
- the museum or collection that holds it;
- the identity or role of the depicted person, if known;
- the portrait’s cultural, political, or historical context; and
- the museum’s own collection page, when one is available.
The most valuable part of Art Selfie is not whether the match is “right.” It is the chance to discover an unfamiliar portrait, artist, museum, or period through a personal visual connection.

To find your art doppelgänger, open Google Arts & Culture, tap the camera button, choose Art Selfie, and take a clear selfie. Treat the returned portrait and percentage as a playful visual comparison, then explore the artwork’s real history. It can suggest an intriguing resemblance, but it cannot establish identity, ancestry, or a factual relationship to the person in the artwork.
