Google Arts & Culture’s Art Selfie compares your selfie with faces in portrait artworks from participating museums and cultural institutions, then shows visually similar matches and an estimated similarity percentage. It is a playful way to discover art—not an identity search, ancestry test, or proof that you are the historical double of the person in a painting.
What is Google Art Selfie?
Art Selfie is a feature in the Google Arts & Culture app and on its official web page. It uses computer-vision and machine-learning technology to compare the face in your selfie with faces appearing in digitized portrait artworks supplied by Google’s museum and cultural-institution partners.
Google describes the result as a percentage estimating visual similarity. The app is not identifying you or the person shown in the artwork. The result depends on the selfie you provide, the visual features the system ranks, and the portraits available in the participating collections. Google has historically described the search pool as containing thousands or tens of thousands of artworks; that should not be treated as a fixed current database size.
How to find your art doppelgänger
- Install or update Google Arts & Culture. The app is available for Android and iOS. Google presents it as a free app, although normal data use and platform conditions still apply.
- Open the app and tap Play. In the current app organization, Google groups camera features and other interactive tools under Inspire, Play, and Explore. Look in Play for the camera features and choose Art Selfie.
- Allow camera access. The app needs camera permission to capture the selfie. If you deny it, Art Selfie cannot take the image until permission is restored in your phone’s settings.
- Take a front-facing selfie. Position your face clearly in the frame and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Review the matches. Art Selfie displays one or more portrait results with estimated similarity percentages.
- Open a result. Tap the portrait to read about the artwork, artist or maker, supplying museum or collection, period, and related cultural material.
- Save or share it. If the relevant controls appear in your version of the app, save the artwork to Favorites or a personal gallery, or use the app’s sharing option to send the result.
Labels and placement can vary by operating system, region, app version, and Google experiments. Older guides may tell you to tap a standalone Camera tab or camera button. Those instructions describe an earlier layout; start with Play in the current app.

How to take a better Art Selfie
Google does not publish a formal technical capture specification for Art Selfie, but these practical steps usually make face matching easier:
- Face the camera directly and keep the phone approximately at eye level.
- Use even, front-facing light rather than strong backlighting or deep shadows.
- Keep your entire face visible. Remove sunglasses and avoid masks, extreme filters, or anything covering key features.
- Use a simple background if the app struggles to detect your face.
- Submit one person at a time. A group selfie can produce an unexpected selection or result.
- Retake the image if your face is sharply turned, cropped, blurred, or partly hidden.
These are troubleshooting suggestions, not Google’s guaranteed requirements. Changing the image can change the match because the feature is responding to the visual information in that particular selfie.
What does the match percentage mean?
The percentage is an algorithmic visual-similarity estimate. Treat it as a playful ranking signal: it indicates how closely the app’s model considers your submitted face to resemble a face in the selected portrait.

It is not a standardized scientific score, biometric identification, genealogy result, or measurement of how much you objectively look like the historical subject. A high percentage does not prove that you have found your true painting twin, and a low percentage does not establish that you look unlike the person by ordinary human judgment.

Art Selfie 2 uses generative AI to place or reinterpret your image in a chosen visual scenario. It does not simply search the existing portrait collection for your closest match.
What if Art Selfie does not appear?
- Update Google Arts & Culture from the relevant app store.
- Open Play and look specifically among the camera features.
- Use the app’s search function for “Art Selfie,” if available.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then check your internet connection.
- Try the official Art Selfie web experience.
- Reinstall the app only after the simpler steps fail.
Google’s official page describes Art Selfie as globally available, but identical availability is not guaranteed in every current app build. Operating system, region, account, rollout, and experiment differences can affect what appears. If the web version works but the app feature is missing, the problem is more likely related to the app build or rollout than to your camera.
If the result looks wrong
Try a new selfie with better light, a direct angle, one visible face, and fewer obstructions. A surprising match can also reflect the limits of the portrait pool: the available examples may be concentrated in particular periods, styles, regions, or partner collections. The algorithm may rank facial features differently from a human viewer.
None of these results turns the portrait into an identification. Art Selfie is matching visual patterns, not determining who you are or who the painted subject was.
Privacy and permissions
Grant camera access only if you want to use the feature. Google Play’s app-level disclosure also lists location, personal information, and other data practices, with data encrypted in transit. You can deny location access if you do not need nearby museums or events, and review permissions later in Android or iOS settings.

Do not assume that the privacy description for every Arts & Culture feature applies equally to Art Selfie. Google’s generative-AI data statement specifically covers Art Selfie 2 and other named generative-AI features. It says supplied content is used to generate results, is not associated with a Google ID, and is not used to train generative-AI models. That statement should not be generalized into an unsupported promise about the original Art Selfie matching tool.
Be cautious when using another person’s face, particularly a child’s, and obtain permission before uploading or sharing it.

The most valuable part of Art Selfie is often what happens after the novelty result. Open the portrait and investigate:
- the artist or maker;
- the subject, where the institution identifies one;
- the artwork’s date, period, and medium;
- the museum, gallery, or collection that supplied the image;
- related works, artists, themes, and exhibitions.
Save the work to Favorites or a gallery if the option is available. When sharing, inspect the generated card or link first so you know what information is included. Sharing an app-generated result does not give you commercial rights to reproduce the underlying artwork. For downloads, advertisements, merchandise, or other commercial use, follow the rights information supplied by the museum or collection.

Does Art Selfie recognize who I am?
No. It compares the face in your selfie with faces in available portrait artworks and returns visual matches; it is not an identity or ancestry lookup.
Can I use a group photo?
For the clearest result, use one person at a time. Multiple faces may lead to an unexpected selection or match.
Can I find the matched painting in a museum?
Open the result to see the supplying institution and artwork information. Whether the physical work is currently on display depends on that institution.
Can I use the matched artwork commercially?
Not automatically. Follow the copyright and image-rights information attached to the artwork and its supplying institution.
