If Photoshop is not working on Windows 11, match the fix to the symptom rather than reinstalling immediately. Reset preferences for launch crashes, bypass plug-ins for startup failures, test the GPU for flickering or black-canvas problems, free space for scratch-disk errors, and repair Creative Cloud when installation or updating fails.
Before changing anything, save your work, close Adobe applications, check Photoshop’s known issues, and note whether the problem affects every document or only one file.

1. Identify the Photoshop problem

| Only one PSD will not open | Investigate file corruption or an incorrect extension before changing Windows or Photoshop. |
Adobe’s general sequence is to check known issues, restart, update Photoshop, reset preferences, troubleshoot the GPU, and update Windows. See Adobe’s basic troubleshooting steps.
2. Confirm Windows 11 and hardware compatibility
Do not assume that every Windows 11 release is supported. For Photoshop 27.x and later, Adobe currently lists Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 23H2, along with Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2 LTSC. Check your release by pressing Windows + R, entering winver, and selecting OK.

Adobe’s minimum requirements for Photoshop 27.x and later include 8 GB of RAM, an Intel or AMD processor with AVX2 and SSE 4.2 or later, a DirectX 12 GPU with feature level 12_0 or later, at least 1.5 GB of GPU memory, 10 GB of available disk space, and internet access for activation, subscription validation, and online services. Adobe recommends 16 GB or more RAM, 4 GB of GPU memory for 4K and larger displays, and a GPU newer than seven years; it does not test GPUs older than seven years. 3. Update Photoshop and Creative Cloud
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Open Home.
- In the right-hand panel, select Updates.
- Select Update beside Photoshop.
To force another update check, open Apps, find Installed apps, select More actions, choose Check for updates, select View Updates if shown, and then update Photoshop. Close Adobe applications first.

Corrupted or incomplete downloads can produce errors such as U43M1D200, U43M1D204, U43M1D205, U43M1D207, and U43M1D214. Use Adobe’s Creative Cloud update-error guidance if the retry fails.
Adobe supplies current bug fixes for the latest Photoshop version. The previous supported version receives technical and security support but not current-version bug fixes.
4. Reset Photoshop preferences
Damaged preferences can cause launch failures, crashes, freezes, performance problems, and incorrect display behavior. Back up custom workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, color settings, presets, and other important configuration first.
If Photoshop will not open
- Close Photoshop completely.
- Hold Alt + Ctrl + Shift.
- Launch Photoshop while continuing to hold the keys.
- When Photoshop asks whether to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file, select Yes.
If Photoshop opens
Go to Edit > Preferences > General, select Reset Preferences On Quit, select OK, close Photoshop, and launch it again.

Rename the settings folder manually
Close Photoshop and paste this path into File Explorer, replacing the placeholders:
C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop <version>Adobe Photoshop <version> SettingsRename the folder to something such as Adobe Photoshop <version> Settings.old, then launch Photoshop. It will create a fresh settings folder. This is safer than deleting the original because you can restore it if preferences were not the cause. Adobe documents these methods in its guide to resetting Photoshop preferences.
5. Bypass optional and third-party plug-ins
A damaged or incompatible plug-in may crash Photoshop during startup or only when you use a particular tool.
- Close Photoshop.
- Hold Shift while launching Photoshop.
- When asked whether to Skip loading optional and third-party plug-ins, select Yes.
If Photoshop works normally, remove or update plug-ins one at a time until you identify the problem. This procedure is described in Adobe’s crash and freeze troubleshooting guide.
6. Test the GPU and graphics driver
GPU problems can cause launch crashes, freezes, flickering, black or green canvases, slow redraws, missing interface elements, discolored crop or transform controls, and partial redraws showing remnants of other windows.
Run the compatibility check
If Photoshop opens, select Help > GPU Compatibility and review the report.

Temporarily disable GPU acceleration
- Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance.
- Clear Use Graphics Processor.
- Select OK and restart Photoshop.
If the problem disappears, the GPU or its driver is a likely cause. This is a diagnostic test, not automatically a permanent solution: features such as Oil Paint, Perspective Warp, Smooth Brush Resizing, and some 3D functions require GPU acceleration.
Reduce advanced GPU features
If Photoshop opens with GPU acceleration enabled, go to Edit > Preferences > Performance > Advanced Settings. Clear Use OpenCL and GPU Compositing, select OK twice, and restart.
Update or roll back the driver
Install the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel rather than relying only on Windows Update, then restart Windows. If the newest driver causes the problem, Adobe recommends testing a slightly older stable driver. See Adobe’s guidance for GPU and graphics-driver issues.
On an Intel-based computer, Photoshop may report that the GPU is incompatible when the Microsoft OpenCL/OpenGL Compatibility Pack is installed. Adobe advises uninstalling that compatibility pack and restarting Windows; see its GPU compatibility instructions.
7. Fix “Scratch disks are full”
Photoshop may refuse to launch, freeze, crash, or display Could not initialize Photoshop because the scratch disks are full, Could not complete your request because the scratch disks are full, or Scratch Disk Low.
Close Photoshop and other Adobe applications. Adobe currently recommends freeing at least 100 GB on the primary scratch-disk drive. On Windows, check the root of C: for files beginning with:

Photoshop TempDelete only files that are not in use. If Photoshop opens, go to Edit > Preferences > Scratch Disks, select another available drive, use the arrows to set its priority, select OK, and restart. Adobe lists NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32 as supported Windows scratch-disk formats; a fast internal SSD is preferable.
To reduce future usage, open Edit > Preferences > Performance and reduce History States. Then review Edit > Preferences > File Handling > Automatically Save Recovery Information. Large documents, extensive history, and recovery data can consume substantial temporary space. See Adobe’s guides to scratch-disk errors and scratch-disk management.
8. Rebuild Photoshop’s font cache
A bad font can make Photoshop crash or hang while launching or working, especially if the issue began after installing a font.
- Close Photoshop and the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Open
C:Users<username>AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop <version>. - Delete the CT Font Cache folder.
- Empty the Recycle Bin.
- Launch Photoshop again.
Photoshop recreates the cache. Also remove or disable recently installed fonts through Windows font management and test again.

Windows may show Repair or Reset controls for some applications, but Microsoft says these options are not available for every desktop program. To check, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the Adobe application, select More options, choose Advanced options if available, and try Repair. Use Reset only if Repair fails and the option is offered. Do not treat this as a universal Photoshop repair.

- Run Adobe’s Creative Cloud desktop-app uninstaller.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Download the current Creative Cloud desktop installer from Adobe.
- Install it and sign in.
Administrator privileges are required to uninstall Creative Cloud. Follow Adobe’s Creative Cloud installation-failure instructions.
Use the Cleaner Tool only last
Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool only after normal repair, uninstall, and reinstall attempts fail—for example, when Creative Cloud still will not launch or apps cannot be installed or updated. It is intended for experienced users. Back up preferences, workspaces, presets, actions, and third-party plug-ins first.

If the problem began immediately after updating Photoshop, open Creative Cloud, find Photoshop, select More actions > Other versions, choose the required previous major version, and select Install.
To preserve older versions in future, select your account icon, choose Preferences > Apps, enable Auto-update, open Photoshop’s Advanced options, clear Remove older versions, and select Done. Adobe generally offers downloads for only the two most recent Creative Cloud app versions, so avoid uninstalling a working older version until you know it can be reinstalled.

11. Check whether Windows is the broader problem
If several applications crash, Windows components malfunction, or Windows updates fail, repair system files. Do not use these commands as a substitute for repairing Photoshop preferences, plug-ins, GPU settings, or installation files.

- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthAfter DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannowWait for verification to reach 100 percent, then restart Windows. Microsoft specifies that DISM should be run before SFC. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
12. Use Windows Safe Mode as a diagnostic
Safe Mode loads limited drivers and disables many third-party extensions and startup utilities. If Photoshop works in Safe Mode but not after a normal boot, a startup utility, security product, shell extension, driver, or third-party service may be interfering. Safe Mode identifies that category of problem; it is not a Photoshop-specific repair.
When only one Photoshop file fails
If every other document opens, do not assume Photoshop is broken. The individual file may be corrupt or have the wrong extension. Adobe documents cases in which a different file type, such as a JPEG, was saved with a .psd extension. Make a copy of the file and, only if you know its actual format, rename the extension to match it. See Adobe’s explanation of the “Not a valid Photoshop document” error.

- “Windows 11 has a Photoshop Repair button.” Not necessarily. Windows exposes Repair and Reset only for some applications.
- “Disabling the GPU permanently fixes Photoshop.” It can confirm a GPU problem but may disable GPU-dependent features.
- “The newest graphics driver is always best.” Adobe recommends testing a slightly older stable driver if the newest one fails.
- “Run Photoshop as administrator.” Installation may require administrator rights, but permanently running Photoshop elevated is not a general Adobe troubleshooting fix.
- “Reinstalling preserves settings.” Resetting or uninstalling may remove preferences, workspaces, shortcuts, color settings, presets, and plug-in configuration. Back them up first.
