The durable fix for peeling Dulux interior paint is to correct the underlying moisture, contamination, substrate or adhesion problem before repainting. Scrape every loose layer to a firm edge, feather the transition, clean and dry the surface, fill defects, prime exposed material with a compatible primer, and then apply the appropriate Dulux finish. If several layers are unstable or the failure covers a large area, strip back to a sound substrate and rebuild the coating system instead of painting over it.

The sequence below covers plaster, previously painted walls, woodwork, glossy surfaces and humid rooms, with separate guidance for a small patch and a widespread failure.

Why is my Dulux paint peeling off the wall?

Peeling usually means the paint film has lost adhesion or the layer beneath it is moving or weakening. Dulux identifies trapped moisture, powdery or friable surfaces, dirt, oil, grease, polish residue and substrate movement as common causes. Painting on a damp surface, using incompatible products, applying thick coats or skipping preparation can produce the same result, according to decorating guidance from Homebuilding and building expert Mark Irving of Build & Plumb.

Moisture, leaks and condensation

Peeling around a bathroom, kitchen, window or external wall points first to condensation, a plumbing leak or water entering through the building envelope. A new coat will fail again if the wall remains damp. Find and repair the leak, improve extraction or airflow, and allow the substrate to dry before removing paint.

Friable plaster or filler

If rubbing the wall leaves a dusty film on your hand, the surface is friable. Paint cannot form a reliable bond to loose plaster dust. Remove weak material and use a suitable stabilising, plaster or sealer primer rather than applying finish paint directly.

Grease, polish and glossy paint

A clean-looking wall where paint comes away in islands can still be contaminated. Kitchen grease, furniture polish, wax, soap residue and a hard glossy film can all prevent adhesion. Degreasing and dulling the surface are essential before priming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Movement and cracks

When the failure follows a plaster joint, crack or repeatedly moving edge, the substrate is the problem. Repair the crack or movement first; another topcoat cannot stabilise a moving base.

What does the pattern of peeling tell you?

Use the location and appearance as clues, not as a substitute for checking the wall and the room.

What you see Most likely issue What to investigate or do
Peeling around a shower, sink, cooker, window or outside wall Condensation, a leak or moisture ingress Check plumbing, seals, gutters and ventilation; dry the wall before repair.
Fine powder transfers to your hand Friable plaster, filler or chalky paint Remove weak material and use a compatible stabilising or plaster primer.
Islands of paint detach from an otherwise clean wall Grease, polish, wax, soap or a glossy layer Wash with a suitable detergent, rinse, dry and sand to a dull key where required.
Cracks or peeling that follow a joint Substrate movement or an unrepaired crack Repair the movement and rebuild the coating system.
Several paint layers lift together Weak adhesion between older coats Strip the affected area back to a sound substrate rather than burying it under new paint.

How should I inspect the wall before touching the paint?

Do not seal in an active leak or damp patch. Move furniture, protect the floor, and examine the whole wall rather than only the obvious blister.

  • Look above and below the failure for plumbing routes, window reveals, ceiling stains and cold corners.
  • Check whether the surrounding paint is firmly bonded by lightly pressing a scraper edge under a suspected area. Stop only when the remaining film is sound.
  • Identify the substrate: plaster, drywall, wood, old gloss or a previous repair. Primer choice depends on that material.
  • Ventilate the room while cleaning and drying, but avoid creating condensation on a cold wall.

What tools and materials do I need?

Gather everything before scraping so the exposed substrate is not left unprotected for days.

  • Paint scraper tool set and, for stubborn residue, a wire brush.
  • 120–220 grit abrasive paper or a hand sanding block for feathering and dulling glossy paint.
  • Protective sheets, masking tape, gloves, eye protection and a dust mask when sanding.
  • Sugar soap or another suitable detergent, clean water, sponges and lint-free cloths.
  • Interior filler such as the Polycell Polyfilla range for holes, dents and cracks.
  • A primer or sealer matched to the exposed substrate and the intended Dulux topcoat.
  • A compatible Dulux interior finish, roller, brush and a clean paint tray.

How do I fix a peeling patch step by step?

Follow this order. Each stage removes a reason for the next coat to fail.

  1. Protect and inspect. Move furniture, cover floors and establish that the wall is dry and stable. Resolve leaks, damp or ventilation problems before proceeding.
  2. Scrape to a firm edge. Hold the scraper at a shallow angle and lift every loose or blistered section. Dulux’s official guidance says all loose material should be removed back to a firm edge, then spot-primed with the appropriate primer and recoated with the appropriate product. Pav Wasik of Uptown Interiors similarly advises using a scraper to lift edges, followed by a wire brush to remove residue. Do not leave a thin, hollow-sounding skin simply because it is difficult to reach.
  3. Brush away residue. Use a wire brush lightly around the perimeter and bare substrate. Stop when the remaining paint is firmly attached; aggressive brushing can gouge soft plaster.
  4. Feather the perimeter. Sand the step between bare substrate and sound paint until it feels gradual rather than sharp. Homebuilding’s decorating guidance suggests 120–220 grit for this work. Remove all sanding dust with a brush or a slightly damp cloth.
  5. Wash off contaminants. Clean with sugar soap or a suitable detergent, rinse with clean water and let the wall dry fully. This removes dirt, grease and chalky residue that would undermine adhesion. On glossy paint, cleaning is followed by sanding to a matt finish.
  6. Fill damage. Apply an appropriate interior filler to dents, holes and stable cracks. Allow it to dry completely, sand it flush, and remove the new dust. Deep or moving cracks need a building repair, not just a skim of filler.
  7. Prime every exposed area. Bare plaster, filler, wood and old glossy coatings each need a compatible primer. Spot-prime the repair and any other exposed substrate; do not rely on the finish coat to seal porous material.
  8. Level rough plaster if necessary. For an uneven surface, Dulux Pre-Paint SmoothOver is specified to skim up to 3 mm and set in four hours. Those are its technical-sheet specifications, not a universal drying promise. Loose plaster and old loose paint must still be removed first.
  9. Apply the topcoat. Once the primer or undercoat has reached its stated recoat stage, apply one or two even coats of the compatible Dulux interior finish. Follow the tin’s recoat time and avoid thick coats, cold conditions and high humidity while the film dries.

Do I need primer after scraping peeling paint?

Yes, whenever scraping exposes plaster, filler, wood, a porous repair or a difficult glossy surface. Primer equalises suction, seals powdery material and provides the adhesion layer that a decorative coat alone may not supply.

Exposed or existing surface Primer approach Examples named in published guidance
Bare plaster or repaired filler Use a plaster-appropriate primer, sealer or mist-coat system after the surface is fully dry. Dulux 1-Step Primer Sealer Undercoat; a suitable plaster primer.
Glossy or poorly keyed coating Clean, sand to a dull key and use an adhesion primer where the topcoat needs extra grip. Dulux PRECISION Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer.
General interior repairs Use a compatible water-based primer/sealer over sound, clean preparation. Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is identified by Homebuilding as a general-purpose option.
Loose edges that remain slightly unstable after scraping Remove all genuinely loose paint first; a bridging sealer can consolidate the remaining edge. Zinsser Peel Stop is described by product manager Jamie Beaumont as a clear sealer that penetrates gaps and glues them down.

Primer is not a substitute for scraping. Peel Stop or a similar bridging sealer cannot make a hollow, detached layer sound; unstable paint must be removed first.

Can I paint over flaking emulsion?

No. A fresh emulsion may hide the flakes briefly, but the weak layer remains the failure point and can pull the new film away as it dries or as humidity changes. Scrape back to firm paint, feather the edge, clean, dry, fill and prime before applying the finish.

Painting over a small area is acceptable only when every surrounding layer is sound and the defect has been rebuilt. If a scraper keeps finding hollow or lifting paint beyond the visible patch, enlarge the repair until the boundary is stable.

Should I sand peeling paint before repainting?

Sand after scraping, not instead of scraping. Abrasive paper smooths the transition and gives sound glossy paint a mechanical key, but it will not remove every weak blister safely.

Use 120–220 grit to feather the edge and smooth filler. On a glossy or enamel surface, continue until the sheen is dull. Use dust control and avoid aggressive sanding that damages plaster or spreads contamination across the wall.

When should I repair a patch, and when should I strip the whole area?

A patch repair is suitable when the failure is isolated and the surrounding paint is firmly bonded. Widespread, recurring or layered failure needs a larger strip and rebuild.

Condition Recommended scope Reason
One small blister or chip; surrounding paint is sound Scrape, feather, clean, fill, spot-prime and match the topcoat. The stable surrounding film provides a reliable boundary.
Peeling across a large wall or ceiling area Strip affected paint back to a sound substrate, then prime and recoat. Dulux recommends total stripping for large areas because isolated patches leave hidden weak layers.
Failure returns after a careful patch Stop redecorating and investigate damp, contamination or movement; then rebuild. Recurrence indicates the cause was not merely cosmetic.
Several old coats detach together Remove the unstable stack, repair the substrate and establish a new primer/topcoat system. New paint cannot stabilise multiple poorly bonded layers.

How do I repair previously emulsioned plaster?

Wash the wall with sugar soap, rinse, let it dry, and lightly sand sound paint. Spot-prime every bare or filled area, then apply the Dulux finish in even coats. If the plaster powders, treat it as friable and use a suitable stabilising or plaster primer rather than ordinary emulsion.

How do I paint bare or repaired plaster?

Allow new plaster and filler to dry fully before coating. A mist coat or plaster-specific primer may be required to control suction; the correct choice depends on the product system and the substrate condition. Applying a full-strength finish to thirsty plaster can leave uneven sheen and weak adhesion.

How do I fix peeling paint on interior woodwork?

Remove loose paint, sand sound paint to a dull key and clean away dust. Apply a dedicated wood primer or undercoat, then use a compatible wood finish such as Dulux Trade Quick Dry Satinwood. Pay particular attention to end grain, joints and areas exposed to repeated handling, where movement can reopen a poorly prepared edge.

How do I repaint glossy or enamel surfaces?

First remove grease, polish and other contamination. Sand the intact coating until it is uniformly matt, wipe away dust, and apply an adhesion primer if the new system requires one. A smooth, shiny surface left unkeyed is a common reason for islands of new paint to detach.

How do I stop peeling paint in a bathroom or kitchen?

Control moisture before choosing paint. Use extractor ventilation during and after bathing or cooking, keep wet surfaces from repeatedly soaking the wall, and repair leaks or failed seals. Let damp areas dry completely before scraping.

Choose a finish rated for humid, washable interiors and follow its preparation and curing instructions. Zinsser product manager Jamie Beaumont recommends PermaWhite for high-humidity interiors; regardless of brand, a moisture-tolerant coating cannot compensate for water entering behind the film.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

How can I make a patch blend into the rest of the wall?

Make the repair boundary gradual by feather-sanding several centimetres into sound paint. Keep filler flush, remove every trace of dust, and prime only after the surface is level and dry. Apply the finish in the same sheen and application method used on the rest of the wall, extending each coat beyond the repair to avoid a hard outline.

Touch-up colour can still look different when the existing wall has faded, been cleaned repeatedly or was applied with a different roller texture. In those cases, repainting the entire wall from corner to corner usually produces a more uniform appearance than repeatedly enlarging small touch-ups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What common mistakes make peeling return?

  • Painting over dampness: moisture pressure and condensation undermine the new film. Resolve the source and verify that the wall is dry.
  • Stopping at the visible edge: paint that sounds hollow or lifts under the scraper is still unstable. Continue until the boundary is firm.
  • Skipping cleaning: grease, polish and chalk remain adhesion barriers even when the wall looks clean.
  • Using the wrong primer: porous plaster, wood, glossy paint and friable surfaces require different preparation products.
  • Leaving sanding dust: dust forms a weak intermediate layer. Vacuum or brush, then wipe appropriately and allow the surface to dry.
  • Applying heavy coats: thick films dry unevenly and are more vulnerable in cold or humid conditions. Respect the product’s coverage and recoat guidance.
  • Ignoring movement: cracks at joints or recurring splits need substrate repair before decoration.

What do the named Dulux product specifications actually mean?

Product claims apply to the named product and its stated test or technical conditions; they are not guarantees for every wall or room.

Product or claim Published specification How to interpret it
Dulux EasyCare technical sheet (2024) Claimed to be 20 times tougher than conventional interior paints and to comply with Class 1 scrub resistance. A durability and scrub-resistance claim for that product, not proof that it will adhere to a damp or contaminated wall.
Dulux/AkzoNobel Pre-Paint SmoothOver technical sheet (2023) Skims up to 3 mm and sets in four hours. Useful for rough or uneven plaster; the four-hour figure is not a universal drying time for all fillers, primers or paints.
General repair economics No universal independent failure-rate, lifespan or cost figure is established in the cited guidance. Budget and durability depend on moisture, substrate, preparation, product system and room conditions.

How long should the repaired area remain untouched?

Use the primer, filler and topcoat labels as the controlling schedule. “Set,” “dry to touch” and “recoat” are different milestones, and cool or humid rooms extend them. Do not close a bathroom, wash the wall or hang items against the repair until the finish has reached its stated cure guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can condensation cause peeling even when there is no leak?

Yes. Repeated moisture from showers, cooking or drying clothes can condense on a cold wall and gradually weaken the paint film without leaving a plumbing stain. Improve extraction and airflow, warm the surface, and allow it to dry before rebuilding the coating.

Can I use a mist coat over old, sound emulsion?

A mist coat is intended for porous new plaster, not as a universal bonding layer over intact painted walls. On old emulsion, clean and lightly abrade the sound coating, then spot-prime exposed or repaired areas with a compatible product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a repaired patch show through after painting?

Differences in porosity, sheen or roller texture can telegraph through a finish even when the colour matches. Seal the filler, use the same application method as the surrounding wall, and repaint from corner to corner if a seamless appearance matters.

Is a clear bridging sealer safe to apply over every flaking edge?

No. A bridging sealer is for a remaining edge that is sound enough to consolidate after loose paint has been removed. It cannot secure hollow, damp or actively moving material; those conditions require further removal or building repair first.
