Error 131 usually points to an Adobe installation conflict or a Creative Cloud update failure—not a Photoshop editing error. Close the Adobe background processes named in the error message, then retry the installation or update. First check where the code appears: if it shows inside Photoshop while you open or sync a cloud document, that may be a different issue.
First, identify where Error 131 appears
Adobe’s current Error 131 guidance describes the code mainly in connection with updating the Creative Cloud desktop app or installing Acrobat. It is not defined as a Photoshop-only error. Photoshop may be the product you selected, while Creative Cloud or one of its background services is the component that cannot finish its work. See Adobe’s Error 131 guidance.

| While installing Photoshop | Close the Adobe background processes listed in the error, then retry. Creative Cloud may be the component failing. |

| While updating Creative Cloud | Use the process-closing steps below, which are Adobe’s direct Error 131 remedy. |
| While installing Acrobat | Close the named Adobe processes and open Microsoft Office apps before retrying. |
| Inside Photoshop while opening or syncing a cloud document | Do not assume the installer fix applies. Adobe’s older Photoshop documentation includes a separate cloud-document context involving “131”; investigate the document or connection issue instead. See Adobe’s Photoshop reference. |
Close the conflicting processes and retry
Save your work and close Photoshop, Creative Cloud, Acrobat, and other Adobe apps first. End only the processes named in the Error 131 dialog or the relevant Adobe guidance. Depending on the error and Creative Cloud version, they may include CCLibrary, Creative Cloud Content Manager, Adobe Content Synchronizer, Creative Cloud Libraries Synchronizer, and Node. Not every computer will show every process.
Windows
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Processes tab and find a process named in the Error 131 message. If the message does not list processes, check for the Adobe processes named above.
- Select the matching process and choose End task. Repeat only for the relevant named processes.
- Reopen Creative Cloud and retry the Photoshop installation or update.
If a process immediately reappears, fully exit Creative Cloud from the notification area and end it again. If Windows will not close it, restart the computer and retry before using cleanup tools. Adobe’s Creative Cloud Error 131 instructions describe the Windows process steps.

macOS
- Close Photoshop and Creative Cloud. Press Command + Spacebar, search for Activity Monitor, and open it.
- Search for a process named in the error message. If needed, check the process names listed above; a process may not appear until Creative Cloud is open.
- Select the matching process, click the Stop button, then choose Quit. If it remains open, repeat and choose Force Quit.
- Reopen Creative Cloud and retry the installation or update.
macOS may require administrator authentication. Process labels can vary slightly by Creative Cloud version. See Adobe’s macOS Error 131 instructions for the corresponding Activity Monitor method.
If the failing installation is Acrobat
Close Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other open Microsoft Office apps before trying the Acrobat installation again. Adobe gives this additional advice for Acrobat; it is not a general requirement for Photoshop-only installs. See Adobe’s Error 131 page for Acrobat guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Error 131 returns
Move from low-risk steps to more disruptive ones. Do not begin by deleting Adobe folders, editing the registry, or running a cleaner.
1. Restart the computer
A restart can release files held open by an Adobe process that would not close or keeps relaunching. After restarting, open Creative Cloud and retry before launching other Adobe apps.

2. Repair the Creative Cloud desktop app
- Download the official Creative Cloud uninstaller for your operating system from Adobe’s Creative Cloud installation troubleshooting page.
- Run it and choose Repair.
- Relaunch Creative Cloud, sign in again if prompted, and retry Photoshop.
Repair is less disruptive than removing the app, though Adobe may sign you out.
3. Uninstall and reinstall Creative Cloud
If Repair fails, run the official uninstaller again and choose Uninstall, then reinstall Creative Cloud from Adobe. This is a stronger intervention: you may be signed out, and installed Adobe apps may be harder to manage until Creative Cloud is restored. Follow Adobe’s uninstall and reinstall guidance.

4. Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool only for persistent installation damage
Adobe’s Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool is intended for persistent installation problems such as damaged records or leftover data, not as the first Error 131 fix. Before running it, back up important files, close Adobe apps, and read each prompt carefully. Download it only from Adobe; it can remove Creative Cloud and related installation data.
5. Check account permissions and network controls
If the installation still fails, consider whether the current account can install software or has a damaged user profile. Adobe describes using a new local administrator account as one escalation for damaged Creative Cloud installations; see Adobe’s damaged Creative Cloud guidance.

Network and security controls can also interfere with Creative Cloud downloads or installation, although they are not Adobe’s primary Error 131 fix. Try a stable connection, disconnect a VPN temporarily, and confirm that Creative Cloud is allowed through the firewall. On a work or school network, ask IT about proxy or firewall restrictions. If you test antivirus interference, follow the security vendor’s instructions and re-enable protection immediately. Adobe discusses these factors in its stuck Creative Cloud installation guidance.

Error 131 may be a general code hiding a more useful file, permission, or process error. Adobe lists these installer log locations:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit:
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAdobeInstallers - Windows, 32-bit:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeInstallers - macOS:
/Library/Logs/Adobe/Installers/
Look for Install.log or a compressed .log.gz file. In the relevant log, search backward from the end for ERROR, then search for FATAL. Record the secondary error and affected path; generic warnings are not necessarily the cause. Adobe notes that downloads, initial Creative Cloud setup, and individual product installation can have separate logs, so use the log for the stage that failed. See Adobe’s log-location instructions and its Creative Cloud log interpretation guidance.
Quick Recap
Do not confuse Error 131 with other Photoshop problems
- A cloud-document problem: A “131” encountered inside Photoshop while working with a cloud document is not automatically the installer conflict described here. The context matters.
- Error 130: Adobe documents this separately as “Unable to install the product,” with different troubleshooting. See Adobe’s Error 130 guidance.
- Error 132: This is another distinct code; do not apply Error 131 instructions solely because the number is nearby.
- A missing DLL or Visual C++ message when Photoshop launches: That is a runtime or launch problem, not necessarily an installation Error 131. See Adobe’s Windows VCRUNTIME troubleshooting.
