For painters, illustrators, and visual artists, the best fit depends on what you need the AI to do: choose Ideogram for text-heavy graphics and layouts, Midjourney for open-ended visual exploration, and PromeAI when you want to transform a sketch, model screenshot, or existing image. They overlap, but they are built around different workflows—not a single shared definition of “best image.”

For painting, these tools are most useful as aids for reference gathering, composition experiments, color and lighting studies, and presentation mockups. Their outputs are not dependable records of real anatomy, architecture, materials, or perspective, so treat them as visual prompts rather than authoritative references.

Quick comparison for painters and visual artists

Tool Best fit Useful workflow Important limitation
Ideogram Posters, illustrated titles, labels, and graphic compositions where wording and layout matter Generate a design-oriented image, then refine text and other elements using its editing features Text errors can still occur; its own FAQ acknowledges spelling mistakes and missing words. Ideogram FAQ
Midjourney Painterly ideation, moodboards, stylized scenes, and broad visual exploration Explore image concepts; paid plans use Fast GPU time, with Relax image generation on Standard and higher Stealth privacy is limited to Pro and Mega, and there is no basis here for declaring it objectively superior in image quality. Midjourney plan details
PromeAI Architecture, interiors, product concepts, and turning sketches or existing images into variations Use sketch, consistency, texture, region, editing, mockup, and image/video tools in a design-oriented workflow Its Free and Base plans are personal-use only under the stated commercial licensing terms. PromeAI commercial licensing

None of these is a substitute for a painting program when you need dependable brushwork, layer control, or precise hand-painted corrections. A practical artist’s workflow may use one generator for rough ideas and a conventional drawing or painting application for the final image.

What each tool is designed to do

Ideogram: design-led images and text

Ideogram positions its 4.0 model around multilingual text, layout control, editable elements, realistic 2K images, and open weights. The platform also surfaces features such as Canvas, image editing, character consistency, and design-oriented tools. That makes it a natural first choice for a painted illustration that also needs a title, poster treatment, signage, or packaging concept. Ideogram 4.0 and Ideogram documentation

Its open-weight description is not the same as saying “open source.” Ideogram’s model page describes weights, fine-tuning, self-hosting, licensing, and API access; check the applicable terms before deploying a model or using it in a commercial pipeline. Ideogram 4.0 model information

Midjourney: visual exploration

Midjourney is oriented toward image-making and visual exploration, with web and Discord workflows and subscription-based GPU time. For a painter, that can suit quickly exploring atmosphere, palette, lighting, costume, or alternate compositions. The result should be evaluated as an idea, not as proof that a particular style or rendering method is objectively better.

PromeAI: transform and refine a source image

PromeAI is a wider visual-design suite. Its listed tools include Sketch Rendering, Consistency Rendering, TextureLock Rendering, Region Rendering, image variation, Creative Fusion, Magic Editor, Erase & Replace, outpainting, background removal, upscaling, mockups, and image-to-video and text-to-video. That tool breadth makes it a strong workflow fit when you begin with a sketch, screenshot, or existing visual and want alternatives or localized changes. PromeAI tools

Which one fits common painting tasks?

Planning an original painting

Try Midjourney when you want to explore many moods or visual directions from a written brief. Use the results to prompt your own decisions about silhouette, value grouping, setting, or color—not as a prescription to copy. If you already have a drawing or compositional block-in, PromeAI’s sketch-oriented workflow may be more useful for exploring treatments while starting from your own structure.

Designing a poster or an image with lettering

Start with Ideogram when the artwork needs a readable headline or deliberate layout. Its product positioning specifically emphasizes text and layout, but proof every word at the size and resolution you intend to use. For final lettering, replacing generated text in a design application is safer than assuming the image contains exact copy. Ideogram 4.0 and Ideogram FAQ

Rendering an architectural or interior concept

PromeAI is the clearest workflow match when you want to turn a hand sketch, photo, or modeling-software screenshot into a visual concept, or test material and lighting variations. It describes sketch rendering and architecture-focused workflows, including region and texture controls. PromeAI image-generation workflows

Do not treat an attractive render as a technically accurate building reference: check whether windows, stairs, floor plans, and structural relationships stay consistent. Generated imagery is not a substitute for construction documents, engineering, code review, or verified measurements.

Editing an existing composition

PromeAI lists a broad set of source-image editing tools, including region rendering, erase and replace, outpainting, and background removal. Ideogram also exposes Canvas and editing-oriented capabilities. Choose based on the operation you need—localized replacement, extension, text adjustment, or a new variation—and test whether the unchanged areas remain intact. Feature availability and export limits can depend on the plan. PromeAI tools and Ideogram available plans

How to compare them fairly for your own work

A striking sample image does not tell you how often a tool produces something useful, how many retries it takes, or whether the edit preserves your composition. Test the tasks you actually paint rather than relying on a single “best image” claim.

  1. Choose a small set of briefs. Include one scene or portrait, one exact-text poster, one source-sketch rendering, one object replacement, and one character or subject that must stay consistent across several images.
  2. Run the same plain-language prompt first. Use each tool’s default workflow and record its settings, generation time, usage consumed, and number of usable results.
  3. Run a second pass with the tool’s relevant controls. For example, test Ideogram for the text layout, PromeAI from your uploaded sketch, and Midjourney for visual exploration. Keep this separate from the default comparison.
  4. Score results against your task. Check prompt adherence, composition, value and lighting readability, material coherence, typography if relevant, consistency across revisions, and how much correction you would need to do by hand.
  5. Repeat consequential tests. Save prompts and representative outputs; avoid selecting only the luckiest result. For exact text, inspect spelling and hierarchy. For references, check whether identity, pose, and structure drift across variations.

Do not collapse all of those observations into one universal quality ranking. A painter seeking mood and composition can weight visual exploration heavily; an illustrator creating a promotional poster should give text correctness and layout more weight.

Pricing, usage limits, and access

Ideogram

Ideogram’s pricing page has advertised a Free plan and annual-billing prices of $15 per month for Plus, $42 per month for Pro, and $20 per user per month for Team. Its plan documentation lists different monthly-billing prices: $20 for Plus, $60 for Pro, and $30 per Team member. These are different billing bases, not directly interchangeable prices; check the live page before subscribing. Ideogram pricing and Ideogram plan details

The listed paid-plan allowances include 1,000 monthly priority credits for Plus, 3,500 for Pro, and 1,500 per user for Team, as well as private generation and unlimited slow credits. Credit consumption varies by model and rendering mode, so a credit allowance does not translate into a fixed number of finished images. Ideogram available plans

Midjourney

Midjourney’s official plan table lists four paid tiers. Annual totals and their monthly equivalents reflect annual prepayment; annual billing is listed as 20% less than paying month by month.

Plan Monthly billing Annual total Annual equivalent Fast GPU time per month
Basic $10 $96 $8/month 3.3 hours
Standard $30 $288 $24/month 15 hours
Pro $60 $576 $48/month 30 hours
Mega $120 $1,152 $96/month 60 hours

Under the official plan comparison, Standard, Pro, and Mega include unlimited image generations in Relax mode; Pro and Mega include unlimited video generation in Relax mode. Extra GPU time is listed at $4 per hour. These plan-specific modes are not the same as unlimited fast generation. Midjourney plan comparison

PromeAI

PromeAI advertises free access and paid tiers, but a stable, complete current price table is not established here. Check its live pricing information for the price, credit or usage limits, export conditions, and any video restrictions that apply to your account. Its homepage promotes video capabilities, but promotional “unlimited 4K” messaging should not be treated as a guarantee independent of plan, model, duration, speed, or fair-use terms. Commercial use and privacy: check both separately

A platform’s permission to use an output commercially does not by itself guarantee copyright protection, exclusivity, or freedom from third-party claims. Your jurisdiction, the source image, recognizable people, trademarks, copyrighted characters, and your client contract can all matter. Review the current terms for the specific account and use case.

  • Ideogram: its pricing information says paid plans include private generation and that it does not restrict users’ rights in outputs, subject to its Terms of Service. That wording is not a promise that every result is protectable or risk-free. API, enterprise, and custom-model use may have separate licensing and pricing. Ideogram pricing, available plans, and API pricing
  • Midjourney: its plan page says subscribers can generally use images and videos commercially, but companies with more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must use Pro or Mega. Stealth Mode is available only with Pro and Mega; a paid plan alone does not make every generation private. Midjourney plan details
  • PromeAI: its commercial-use page says Free and Base plans are for personal use only, while Standard, Pro, and Team include commercial licensing subject to its terms. The page also places responsibility for legal compliance and rights to identifiable faces on the user, and says terms may change. PromeAI commercial licensing

For client work, confirm the exact plan license and privacy settings before uploading confidential sketches, commissions, or unreleased concepts. Commercial permission and private generation answer different questions.

Recommendations by artist type

  • Painter or illustrator building moodboards: begin with Midjourney if the main job is exploring visual direction; assess results for usefulness to your own composition rather than polish alone.
  • Graphic artist making posters, labels, or social images: begin with Ideogram, then proof or replace text during final design.
  • Architectural illustrator or interior designer: try PromeAI when you have a sketch or model screenshot to develop into concept variations, while checking geometry by hand.
  • Product or concept designer: PromeAI’s mockup and editing toolset may suit source-image refinement; Ideogram may suit presentation graphics where layout and text are central.
  • Artist selling AI-assisted work: compare the relevant commercial terms before making a purchase. PromeAI’s Free and Base restrictions are particularly important, while Midjourney’s company-revenue qualification and Ideogram’s paid-plan terms also affect the decision.

Using more than one can be sensible: explore imagery in Midjourney, develop a text-led graphic in Ideogram, or take a sketch into PromeAI for design variations. It is usually more useful to assign each tool a clear task than to expect one platform to excel at every stage.
