For one-sided fusible fleece, put the fleece adhesive-side up and place the fabric right-side up over it, so the adhesive faces the fabric’s wrong side. Press exactly as the fleece manufacturer directs, allow the layers to cool, check the bond, and then sew the fused piece as one fabric layer.

What fusible fleece does

Fusible fleece adds softness, body, and stability to fabric. It is commonly used in bags, totes, pillows, baskets, wraps, and mug cozies. The fleece has adhesive on one side; some products are adhesive on both sides, so confirm the package before positioning it.

For a general visual reference, AllPeopleQuilt’s one-sided fusible fleece tutorial shows the adhesive-side-up arrangement with fabric right-side up on top.

How to fuse fleece to fabric

  1. Check the product directions. Heat, steam, pressure, and pressing time vary by fleece. Do not substitute one product’s settings for another’s.
  2. Prepare the fabric. If the product directions call for it, prewash the fabric to remove finishes that could block adhesion. The Pellon 986F directions advise prewashing and say not to use fabric softener.
  3. Identify the adhesive face. On one-sided fleece, look for the bumpy or visibly adhesive side. That face must contact the fabric’s wrong side.
  4. Layer the pieces. Place the fleece adhesive-side up on a protected ironing surface. Lay the fabric right-side up over the fleece, aligning edges and smoothing out wrinkles.
  5. Press in sections. Lift and place the iron rather than sliding it, unless the product specifically says otherwise. Cover the whole area, slightly overlapping each press.
  6. Cool and inspect. Let the fused unit cool flat, then test the edges and any loose areas. Repress according to the package directions if the bond is incomplete.
  7. Sew the fused unit. Once bonded, sew the fleece-and-fabric combination as a single layer, as described by AllPeopleQuilt.

Which side goes where?

The adhesive side always faces the fabric. For one-sided fleece, the practical stack is:

Bonding method Direction listed for Pellon 986F Important check
Standard bond Press firmly for approximately 10 seconds. Lift and slightly overlap the iron until the area is fused. Let the piece cool, then check that the fleece is attached.
Stronger-bond method Cover the layers with a thin damp press cloth and press at the Wool/Steam setting for 10–15 seconds, lifting and overlapping. Use only when appropriate for the product and fabric; verify the bond after cooling.

Test a scrap first, especially with heat-sensitive, coated, textured, or unfamiliar fabric. A swatch reveals whether the fabric changes appearance and whether the selected setting produces a secure bond.

Troubleshooting an uneven or weak bond

Fleece lifts at the edges

  • Confirm that the adhesive face was against the fabric.
  • Repress the area using the product’s stated time, pressure, and temperature.
  • Let it cool completely before judging the result.

Adhesive appears on the ironing surface

The layers may be reversed, or the fleece may have shifted. Stop pressing, allow the area to cool, and protect the iron and board with a suitable pressing layer before continuing according to the package directions.

Fabric is shiny, scorched, or distorted

The heat or moisture may be unsuitable for that fabric. Stop and return to a scrap test with a lower setting only if the fleece instructions and fabric-care information permit it; otherwise choose a compatible fleece or fabric.

The fused piece feels too thick

Fleece weight affects loft and handling. Choose a lighter fleece when the project needs flexibility, or reserve a heavier option for projects that benefit from more body. Product directions and the project pattern should determine compatibility.

Before sewing: a quick checklist

  • The fleece type (one-sided or double-sided) matches the project.
  • The adhesive face is against the fabric’s wrong side.
  • The fabric was prepared as the product directs.
  • A scrap test was completed where fabric or heat response is uncertain.
  • Every section was pressed with the actual product’s settings.
  • The unit cooled flat and was checked for loose areas.
  • Edges and layers are aligned before stitching.

Projects that benefit from fused fleece

Fusible fleece is useful wherever fabric needs softness plus structure. Examples documented in project tutorials include a fabric basket and a fall mug cozy. Bags, totes, pillows, and fabric wraps are other common applications.
