If Canva prints with a thin white strip around the artwork, there are two possible causes: the design does not extend far enough to the page edge, or the printer cannot print in its outer margins. Fix the Canva file by extending the background into the bleed area, then use the printer’s Borderless setting for home printing. For a professional print shop, export with PDF Print and enable Crop marks and bleed.

Canva cannot override a printer’s built-in minimum margins. If your printer does not offer borderless printing for the selected paper size and type, you must leave a border, print on a larger sheet and trim it, or use a professional print service.

First, identify where the white border is coming from
Before changing export settings, determine whether the white area is already part of the Canva design or appears only on the printed sheet.

- White border visible in Canva: The design contains an inset border, white rectangle, margin, or unfilled area. Edit the design.
- Design reaches the page edge in Canva but the print has white edges: The printer is probably enforcing a non-printable margin, or borderless mode is disabled.
- Only one edge has a border: The paper may be feeding slightly off-center, the page size may not match the paper, or the printer may not support borderless printing for that format.
Fix the Canva design
- Open the design and inspect the page edges at a high zoom level.
- Select the page background and any image, color block, or shape that is supposed to reach the edge.
- Enlarge or reposition that background so it extends beyond the visible page boundary and fills the bleed area.
- Remove any white rectangle or inset frame that was added unintentionally.
- Keep text, logos, faces, and other important details safely inside the edge.
A background should continue past the trim line rather than stopping exactly at it. This gives the printer or finishing equipment extra artwork to work with if the sheet is cut slightly off position. Critical content should not be placed in that extended area: trimming or printer expansion can remove a small amount at the edge.
If the white edge is an intentional design feature, such as a white frame around a photo, do not remove it merely because it prints. The issue is an unwanted border, not every border.
For a professional printer: export PDF Print with bleed
When a print shop will trim the finished piece, use Canva’s print-oriented export:
- Select Share in Canva.
- Choose Download.
- Set the file type to PDF Print.
- Enable Crop marks and bleed when the printer requests them.
- Download the PDF and follow the print shop’s specifications for finished size, bleed, color, paper, and trimming.
Crop marks show where the finished sheet should be cut. Bleed supplies extra artwork beyond that cut line. Together, they help a professional printer produce a full-bleed result without a narrow white sliver caused by small trimming tolerances.

These options do not make a home printer print to the edge of the paper. Crop marks and bleed are file-preparation features; borderless printing is a printer and driver feature.
For home printing: enable Borderless
For a home printer, open the system print dialog or the printer manufacturer’s preferences and look for a setting named:
- Borderless or Borderless printing
- A paper option such as Letter Borderless or 4×6 Borderless
- Remove White Borders
- Expansion
- Amount of extension
The exact menu path depends on the printer model, operating system, paper size, and driver. A Borderless option in Canva or an application preview is not enough; the printer driver must also support and enable it.

Match the paper size and design size
The Canva page size, printer paper setting, and paper loaded in the tray must agree. For example:

- Quality on all inkjet and laser printers and copiers
- A letter-sized Canva design needs the printer’s supported letter setting, or Letter Borderless if available.
- A 4×6 design needs a supported 4×6 Borderless setting.
- A custom Canva size may not be eligible for borderless printing, even if the printer supports borderless output for standard sizes.
Also select the paper type recommended for that printer. Some models restrict borderless printing to particular media types and sizes. If borderless output disappears when you choose a different paper type, that may be a printer limitation rather than a Canva problem.
Adjust expansion carefully
Consumer borderless modes commonly enlarge the image slightly so that the artwork extends beyond all four edges. That prevents white strips caused by paper-feeding tolerances, but it can crop a small amount of the design.
If the printer offers Expansion, Amount of extension, or a similar control:

- Reduce the extension if text or important artwork is being cut off.
- Print one test sheet before producing a larger quantity.
Do not place essential text or logos directly against the edge when designing for a home printer. Borderless printing is designed to hide the printer’s alignment tolerance by sacrificing a little of the outer image, so edge-to-edge artwork needs a safety area.

What to do if the white border remains
- Check the driver, not just Canva. Confirm that Borderless is selected in the printer preferences or system print dialog.
- Check the loaded paper. Verify that its size and type are supported for borderless output.
- Check the page dimensions. Make sure the Canva document and printer paper setting match.
- Look for an expansion control. Increase the extension slightly if the white edge is still visible.
- Look for Remove White Borders. Some printer drivers use this wording instead of Borderless.
- Check the print scaling. Avoid a setting that shrinks the page and creates an artificial margin. Use the printer’s borderless paper preset when one is available.
- Print a single test sheet. Inspect all four edges and confirm that important details are not clipped.
If there is no borderless option for your chosen paper size, the printer probably cannot print to all four edges in that configuration. No Canva export setting can remove that hardware-imposed margin.
Your options when the printer does not support borderless printing
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Accept an intentional white margin | Documents and designs where a frame is acceptable | The artwork will not reach the paper edge |
| Print on a larger sheet and trim it | Occasional flyers, cards, and art prints | Requires accurate cutting and extra paper |
| Use a professional print shop | Full-bleed work, multiple copies, or precise trimming | Costs more than printing at home |
| Use a borderless photo printer | Frequent edge-to-edge home printing | Requires compatible paper, sizes, and printer settings |
If you regularly print photos, flyers, cards, or other full-bleed artwork at home, a borderless-capable printer is the relevant hardware solution. Check the exact model’s supported borderless sizes and media before buying; “borderless” does not necessarily mean every paper size or paper type can be printed edge to edge.

Choose the workflow based on who will finish the piece:
- Printing at home: Prepare the artwork to reach the page edge, match the paper settings, and enable the printer’s Borderless mode. PDF Print is a sensible export format, but it cannot defeat a printer’s minimum margin.
- Using a print shop: Extend the artwork into the bleed area, export PDF Print, and add crop marks and bleed if requested. The shop will trim the larger printed sheet to the finished size.
- Ordering through Canva: Canva Print is an alternative when you want a printed product without operating a home printer. Confirm the product’s required dimensions and finishing options during the order process.
A local professional print shop or Canva Print can be more reliable than trying to force a non-borderless home printer to produce a full-bleed result, particularly when the design contains important content near the edges or when you need several copies.

Common mistakes that do not solve the problem
- Only enlarging the artwork in Canva: This fills an unprinted area in the file, but it cannot make a printer print into its physical minimum margins.
- Adding crop marks for a home print: Crop marks help a professional printer or a person trimming the sheet. They do not activate borderless printing.
- Choosing an unsupported paper type: Borderless mode may be unavailable or may behave differently with media the printer does not support.
- Assuming every custom size works: Borderless output is usually limited to particular paper sizes and presets.
- Expecting zero cropping: Borderless printing may enlarge the image and trim a small amount from each edge.
- Putting important content on the edge: Even a successful borderless print can crop details because of expansion and paper-feed variation.
Quick checklist
- Does the white strip appear in Canva, or only on paper?
- Does the background extend beyond the page edge into the bleed area?
- Are text and logos safely inside the edge?
- For a print shop, did you export as PDF Print and enable Crop marks and bleed if requested?
- For home printing, is Borderless enabled in the printer driver?
- Do the Canva page, loaded paper, and printer preset use the same supported size?
- Is the paper type compatible with borderless output?
- Have you tested expansion and printed one sheet before a full batch?
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove a white border from a Canva print?
Open the Canva design and check whether the white strip is already present. Extend the background image, color, or shape to the page edge and into the bleed area. For home printing, also enable Borderless in the printer preferences and select the matching supported paper size and type.
Do crop marks and bleed make a home printer print to the edge?
No. Crop marks and bleed prepare a file for professional trimming; they do not override the non-printable margins of a home printer. Home printing requires a printer and paper preset that support Borderless output.
Will borderless printing crop my Canva design?
Usually, yes. Borderless modes often enlarge the image slightly beyond the sheet to prevent white strips, which can crop a small amount of the outer design. Keep important text and logos inside the edge and test one sheet first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if my printer has no Borderless setting?
You can accept a margin, print on a larger sheet and trim it, use a professional print shop or Canva Print, or choose a printer that supports borderless printing for the paper size and type you need.
The Bottom Line
Extend the Canva background into the bleed area, then choose the correct finishing method. Use PDF Print with crop marks and bleed for a professional printer; use the printer driver’s Borderless mode, matching paper preset, and expansion controls for home printing. If no borderless option exists for your paper size, the printer’s hardware—not Canva—is causing the white border.
