To hack a vintage Brother electronic knitting machine, add a computer connection or replace its controller so software can back up memory, convert images into stitch patterns, and send those patterns to the machine. The least-invasive approach is a model-specific USB-to-serial cable with software such as img2track or Adafruit’s PDDemulate tools. AYAB is a reversible controller retrofit that supports computer-supplied images up to 200 needles wide, but it requires opening the machine and installing an Arduino-based board.
Identify the exact model first. KH-930, KH-930E, KH-940, KH-950i, KH-965i and KH-970 do not necessarily use the same connector or workflow.

- Download and inspect existing pattern data.
- Convert an image into machine-readable stitch information.
- Upload a new pattern instead of entering every needle selection manually.
Becky Stern’s Adafruit tutorial sets the expectation plainly: “Working with these machines is very difficult.” You should already be comfortable operating the machine normally, following Python scripts when required, and troubleshooting serial communication before attempting a modification.

Use a cable when you want the smallest intervention
A cable-based workflow leaves the knitting machine’s control board in place. It is the sensible starting point if your goal is to transfer patterns, make backups, or experiment with image conversion without committing to a retrofit.
Use AYAB when you need full-width computer control
AYAB replaces the original controller but is designed to be reversible. Its documentation describes the hack as “non-destructive and fully reversible.” The machine’s mechanical systems, needle solenoids and power supply still need to be in good working order; AYAB cannot repair a machine that does not select needles or move reliably.
Treat soundKnit as an experimental extension
soundKnit uses AYAB-compatible Arduino hardware and software to turn sound-frequency spectrograms into visual rows sent to a knitting machine. It is a maker project rather than a dependable first hacking route.

What you need before connecting anything
- The exact Brother model number, including the suffix. A KH-930 is not automatically interchangeable with a KH-930E workflow.
- A machine that knits normally, selects needles correctly and has stable power.
- The model-specific USB-to-serial cable. img2track requires a custom connector, not just any generic USB serial lead.
- FTDI drivers for the cable. Install the driver required by the cable’s FTDI interface before launching transfer software.
- A computer that can run the selected software. The cited img2track and Adafruit pages do not establish one universal operating-system list, so verify compatibility for your computer rather than assuming it.
- A backup plan for the machine’s existing memory. Download or otherwise preserve valuable patterns before uploading new data.
Disconnect power while fitting hardware, keep the carriage clear during initial tests, and do not risk irreplaceable yarn until needle selection has been verified.
Route 1: Adafruit’s FTDI and PDDemulate workflow
Adafruit’s Electro-knit guide is written specifically around the Brother KH-930E. It covers making an FTDI interface cable, installing the software, backing up memory, viewing patterns, adding an image and loading the resulting file back into the machine. The associated repository documents Brother serial floppy communication, the PDDemulate floppy-drive emulator, and scripts for uploading, downloading and modifying patterns.
What this route is good for
- Backing up and examining patterns already stored in a compatible machine.
- Learning the machine’s serial data format.
- Using scripts to modify or transfer pattern files.
Important limits
The published workflow is tied to the KH-930E and related machines documented by that project. Do not assume its cable wiring, scripts or file handling apply unchanged to another Brother model. The documentation does not state a maximum pattern width or a complete operating-system matrix.

Route 2: img2track for image-to-pattern conversion
img2track is the most direct option when the main question is, “How do I turn an image into a knitting-machine pattern?” It reads common image files and converts them into pattern data for Brother KH-930, KH-940, KH-950i, KH-965i and KH-970 machines.

The free version limits loaded patterns to 60 stitches wide. A registration key enables the full 200-stitch width. That is a software limit of the free mode, not a statement that every Brother machine has the same physical width.
Connection requirements
You need a USB-to-serial converter cable with the appropriate custom connector for the knitting machine and the required FTDI drivers. A cable that fits the computer but lacks the correct machine-side connector will not establish the intended link.

Basic img2track workflow
- Confirm that your machine is one of the documented models.
- Install the FTDI driver for your converter cable.
- Connect the model-specific cable with the machine powered down, then start the software.
- Open a small, high-contrast image.
- Set the intended stitch width, check the row direction and inspect the converted preview.
- Load the pattern only after confirming that its width fits the free 60-stitch limit or that your registration key is active for a wider file.
- Test the machine’s needle selection with scrap yarn before knitting a finished piece.
Route 3: AYAB reversible controller retrofit
AYAB replaces the Brother control board with an Arduino microcontroller and custom shield. It allows a computer to supply images up to 200 needles wide and can work with a ribber for double-bed jacquard. Because the original controller is removed, this is a deeper installation than attaching a cable, even though the project describes it as reversible.
Hardware and firmware matching
Install the firmware that matches both the AYAB hardware and your machine version. AYAB’s official release dated March 10, 2025 says existing shields or interfaces should continue to work, but users migrating from an Arduino Mega must move to an UNO R3 for AYAB 1.0.
AYAB installation sequence
- Verify that the machine knits, selects needles, powers on reliably and has working carriage and sensor systems.
- Record the original control-board connections so the machine can be returned to its stock configuration.
- Install the Arduino and custom shield according to the AYAB documentation for your machine version.
- Flash the matching firmware and select the correct machine model in the software.
- Connect the computer, perform a dry test of carriage movement and needle selection, and stop if selections are inconsistent.
- Send a small, high-contrast pattern before attempting a 200-needle design.
Turning an image into a usable pattern
A knitting machine does not receive a photographic image as a finished picture. Software converts the image into discrete needle selections and rows. Start with a simple bitmap that has clear light and dark areas.

Prepare the artwork
- Crop the subject tightly so useful detail is not wasted on empty background.
- Use strong contrast and avoid fine shading until the transfer process is reliable.
- Decide the finished stitch width before converting. On img2track’s free mode, stay at or below 60 stitches; AYAB and registered img2track can address up to 200 needles or stitches as documented.
- Check whether the software’s preview reverses the image or changes row order. Confirm the intended stitch direction before loading.
Make a swatch first
Use scrap yarn and a small test pattern to check needle selection, horizontal orientation and row scaling. A correct computer preview does not guarantee that a machine with a failing solenoid, sensor or power supply will knit the intended design.
Practical setup checklist
- Identify the model: write down the complete Brother designation and compare it with the route’s supported list.
- Check the machine: test carriage movement, needle selection, solenoids and power before adding electronics.
- Select the route: choose a cable and software for minimal intervention, or AYAB for a reversible controller retrofit and 200-needle computer-supplied images.
- Buy the correct interface: match both the FTDI electronics and the machine-side connector.
- Install drivers: complete the FTDI driver installation before diagnosing the knitting software.
- Back up memory: preserve existing patterns before uploading or modifying files.
- Prepare a test image: use a small, high-contrast design and confirm width, direction and row scaling.
- Match firmware: for AYAB, install the firmware for the selected machine; AYAB 1.0 requires UNO R3 when migrating from Mega.
- Test without valuable yarn: verify carriage travel and needle selection on a swatch.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The computer does not see the machine
- Confirm that the cable is the model-specific USB-to-serial type, not a generic USB cable.
- Check that the FTDI driver is installed and that the software is using the correct serial interface.
- Recheck the Brother model against the cable and software’s supported models.
The pattern will not load because it is too wide
img2track’s free mode is limited to 60 stitches. Reduce the design width or use the registration key for the documented 200-stitch capability.
AYAB installs but needle selection is unreliable
Stop knitting and return to machine diagnostics. Confirm the machine’s solenoids, sensors, power and carriage operation, then verify that the firmware and selected machine version match the installed AYAB hardware.

Check stitch direction, image orientation and row scaling, then repeat with a simpler high-contrast image. An image preview cannot compensate for incorrect model settings or failing machine hardware.
