To mend a stretched or ripped buttonhole, first stabilize the area from the wrong side, then rebuild only the damaged edge and test the opening against the actual button. Light stretching usually needs figure-eight or ladder stitches; fraying needs closely spaced buttonhole or blanket stitches; missing fabric requires a backing or top patch, and a destroyed buttonhole strip may need replacement.

Identify the damage before sewing

Use the garment’s actual button, not a similar spare, to judge the finished opening. Push it through gently and note whether the problem is loose thread, an oversized opening, a torn edge, or missing fabric.

Damage What you will see Suitable repair Typical equipment
Loose or frayed buttonhole thread Thread ends are fuzzy or pulled, but the surrounding fabric is intact. Remove loose thread and restitch the edge. Needle, matching strong thread, small scissors
Stretched opening The buttonhole is longer or wider than needed, with sound fabric around it. Reduce the opening with figure-eight or ladder stitches, then reinforce the ends. Needle, matching thread, lightweight fusible interfacing
Torn edge The cut edge has split into the garment or the bar tack has pulled loose. Stabilize from the wrong side and rebuild the edge with dense buttonhole or blanket stitches. Needle, strong thread, interfacing
Missing fabric A section of the placket is gone or too weak to hold stitches. Add a concealed backing patch or a visible top patch, then make a new buttonhole. Patch fabric, basting thread, interfacing, sewing tools
Destroyed buttonhole strip The strip is badly torn, distorted, or detached along its length. Replace the strip with new backing and facing before remaking the buttonhole. Matching fabric, machine or hand-sewing equipment

Supplies and safe preparation

  • A seam ripper for removing damaged buttonhole stitches
  • A hand-sewing needle and matching strong thread
  • Lightweight, non-stretch fusible interfacing
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Optional matching fabric for a backing or top patch
  • For machine work: the correct buttonhole foot, stabilizer and, on stretch fabric, optional gimp cord

Work on a flat surface with the garment unbuttoned. Brother cautions that a seam ripper can slip, so keep fingers clear of its cutting point and push it away from your hand.

Stabilize the buttonhole from the wrong side

Cut a piece of lightweight, non-stretch fusible interfacing large enough to extend beyond the damaged area. Place it adhesive-side down on the wrong side and fuse it according to the interfacing maker’s pressing directions. Use a pressing cloth if the fabric requires one.

Stabilization is especially important for ravelly wovens and knits or other stretch fabrics. Sewing.org’s practical guidance is to reinforce such fabric by fusing lightweight interfacing behind the buttonhole area before stitching. Let the area cool flat so the adhesive sets without shifting.

Hand-repair a stretched or slightly oversized opening

  1. Mark the target size. With the actual button beside the opening, mark where the finished ends should stop. Leave enough ease for the button to pass without forcing it, but do not retain extra length that allows the button to pull out.
  2. Remove only damaged thread. Slip the seam ripper under frayed buttonhole thread and cut a few stitches at a time. Do not cut sound garment fabric or the existing bar tacks.
  3. Trim loose fibers. Snip ragged fibers and thread tails flush with the edge. Do not enlarge the opening while cleaning it.
  4. Draw the sides inward. Using matching strong thread, work small figure-eight or ladder stitches from one side toward the marked line. Take shallow bites of stable fabric on each side so the opening narrows without puckering.
  5. Secure the repair. Tie off on the inside, bury the thread tail, and add a compact bar tack at each end if either end is weak.

Check the button repeatedly as you work. The opening should be just large enough for the button to pass; forcing it will stretch the newly repaired edge.

Rebuild a frayed or torn buttonhole edge

  1. After interfacing the wrong side, remove loose original buttonhole thread and trim only unattached fibers.
  2. Thread a needle with matching strong thread and knot it on the wrong side or within the stabilized layer.
  3. Work closely spaced buttonhole or blanket stitches around the cut edge. Keep stitch depth and spacing even so the new corded edge distributes stress.
  4. At each end, pack several stitches into a short bar tack. If the original bar tack has pulled away, anchor the new stitches in sound fabric beyond the tear.
  5. Finish on the wrong side and conceal the tail between fabric layers where possible.

On loosely woven material, take the reinforcing stitches slightly farther into intact fabric rather than relying on the weakened edge alone.

When a machine repair is appropriate

A machine can remake the buttonhole when the garment fabric, presser-foot clearance and machine settings allow it. Fuse or place stabilizer under the area, attach the correct buttonhole foot, and make a test buttonhole on a scrap containing the same fabric layers.

Cut the opening only after the stitching is complete, using a seam ripper carefully from the center toward each end.

Test the repair before wearing the garment

  • Push the actual button through and out of the repaired opening several times by hand.
  • Close the garment and look for puckering, gaps or stitches pulling into the opening.
  • Apply a gentle sideways tug comparable to normal wear; the edge should stay flat and anchored.
  • If the button requires force, enlarge the opening only with controlled trimming after confirming that the stitching is sound.
  • If the edge stretches again, reopen the area from the wrong side, add more stabilization or a backing patch, and restitch into stronger fabric.
