To host your own round robin, first decide whether you mean organizing the event or self-hosting the software: most organizers only need to arrange matches and share results, while running the management app on a server you control adds setup and maintenance. A single round robin gives every pair of teams one match; the practical challenge is fitting those matches around your courts, match times, and breaks without creating conflicting fixtures.
What a round robin is—and how many matches to plan for
In a single round robin, every team plays every other team once. JudgeMate gives eight teams as an example: that field produces 28 matches. A double round robin repeats each pairing, often with sides swapped. JudgeMate’s definition and example are vendor-stated and may change.
For an odd number of teams, one team must sit out in each round. A standard circle-design schedule handles this by adding a dummy participant: whoever is paired with the dummy receives the bye, which rotates from round to round. Warut Suksompong describes this construction in the 2018 paper “Scheduling Asynchronous Round-Robin Tournaments.”
Build a schedule that fits the event day
Before generating fixtures, gather the information that determines both the pairings and the timetable:
#1 Best Overall
- The complete team or player list.
- Whether you want a single or double round robin.
- How many courts or pitches can host matches at the same time.
- The event start time and expected match duration.
- Turnaround or break time between matches.
Enter these details in a generator, then check the resulting schedule rather than assuming the event will fit. JudgeMate says its generator accepts names, courts, start time, match duration, and turnaround, and offers CSV or PDF export. It also describes live score entry and standings. Its page states limits of up to 64 teams and 20 courts; verify the live page for current limits before relying on them.
Review the fixture list for overlapping assignments and whether the last matches finish within your event window. For a large or longer event, inspect rest and fairness as well: a team may play too many matches close together, or teams may have played very different numbers of games at the same point in the day. Suksompong’s paper treats both rest between games and balance in games played as schedule-quality concerns. It reports that the circle design performs well on its measures for an even number of teams, but less well for an odd number, and proposes an alternative schedule for the odd case. Do not assume a basic generator optimizes fairness unless its documentation says that it does.

Choose a tool for the way you’ll run the event
A basic generator may be enough if you need pairings and a printable or downloadable timetable. A management platform is more useful when you want scores, standings, public display, or changes during play. Compare tools on the capabilities that matter to your event:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Team or player capacity and court or time controls.
- Score entry, ranking rules, and standings.
- Whether schedules can be shared publicly or privately.
- PDF, CSV, or other export options.
- Whether fixtures can be edited after generation.
- The technical setup and ongoing maintenance required.
Examples illustrate the range, but vendor features and availability can change. MyLeague24 says its generator is free, supports up to 32 teams or players, computes rankings, and downloads schedules as PDFs. Bracket documents round-robin stages, court and time assignment, score entry, configurable rankings, and a public dashboard. Check each live service for its current terms, functions, and limits.

Self-hosting the software is a separate choice
Hosting a round-robin event does not require hosting its management app yourself. Self-hosting means deploying the software on a server you control, which can offer more control over the application but makes you responsible for its operation.
The rbongard/tournament-scheduler project describes an invite-only app for pickleball and tennis with roster management, scheduling, scoring, notifications, templates, and season standings. Its deployment instructions require database and authentication settings; production email also needs a verified sender and service key. The instructions cover a public domain and reverse proxy/TLS, and warn that builds can consume substantial memory and may run out of memory on low-RAM servers.

That project is one example, not a general promise about every self-hosted tournament tool. Bracket describes itself as open-source and provides deployment documentation, but the existence of deployment instructions alone does not establish that a particular installation is secure or low-maintenance.
What you take on when you self-host
- Configure the application, database, authentication, and any email service it needs.
- Keep public access secure, including the domain and TLS configuration.
- Apply updates and maintain backups.
- Provide enough server resources and troubleshoot failures.
A mini PC is one optional way to run a server on equipment you control, not a requirement or a recommendation for a particular model. Existing hardware or a hosted server may also work. Choose self-hosting only if control is worth the additional administration; it is not necessary just to organize an in-person tournament.
