Sew a compact thread catcher by folding fabric around a small batting-and-cardstock core, then stitching along the inner and outer edges. This folded design uses a 6.5-inch fabric square and is distinct from the larger lined baskets often made with an attached pincushion.

Materials for the folded catcher

For this compact catcher, gather:

  • One 6.5-inch square of fabric
  • One 4-inch square of batting
  • One 4-inch square of cardstock or manila folder
  • Fusible spray
  • A marking pen
  • An iron and pressing surface
  • Pins or binding clips
  • A sewing machine and thread

The measurements and construction below follow the folded project published by AllPeopleQuilt on July 13, 2022. Follow the fusible spray manufacturer’s instructions for application; the tutorial does not specify a heat setting.

How to sew the small thread catcher

  1. Mark the fabric. Place the fabric wrong side up. Use a marking pen to make a dot 1 1/4 inches from each corner.
  2. Fuse the core. Following the spray manufacturer’s directions, fuse the batting square to the cardstock square. Then fuse the cardstock to the wrong side of the fabric, aligning its corners with the four marks.
  3. Fold in the corners. Fold each fabric corner inward until it reaches the batting, then press the folds in place.
  4. Fold the edges inward. Fold each fabric edge toward the batting and press. Fold each edge inward once more so the fabric overlaps the batting, and press again.
  5. Secure and stitch. Hold the folded layers with pins or binding clips. Stitch 1/8 inch from both the outer fabric edges and the inner fabric edges.

How this differs from a pincushion basket

Thread catchers can also be made as larger lined baskets with boxed corners and an attached weighted pincushion. That is a separate pattern, not an expanded version of the folded catcher above.

For example, Kathy Beymer’s Merriment Design tutorial uses matching 17 1/2-by-11-inch outer and lining rectangles, boxed corners, and a stuffed pincushion weighted with metal door hinges. Optional plastic clothesline boning helps the basket mouth stay open. Those pieces and steps belong to that larger build; do not combine them with the small catcher’s 6.5-inch fabric square and 4-inch core.
