Microsoft Paint does not normally use an Office-style Insert > Shapes command. To add a shape or arrow, open an image, choose Shapes from Paint’s toolbar or Home tab, select an item, and click-drag on the canvas.
Paint’s gallery and button layout vary between Windows 10, Windows 11, and different Paint builds. Microsoft confirms that current Paint includes shape and drawing tools; see the official Paint page.
Add a shape in Paint
- Open Paint from the Start menu or Windows Search.
- Choose File > Open to load a picture, or start with a blank canvas.
- Select Shapes on the Windows 11 toolbar. In classic Paint and some Windows 10 layouts, open the Home tab and find the Shapes gallery.
- Choose a shape, such as a rectangle, oval, line, rounded rectangle, polygon, callout, or arrow if available.
- Click and drag across the canvas. Release the mouse button when the shape reaches the required size.
The exact gallery contents can differ by Paint version, so do not assume every historical shape is present in every installation.
Insert an arrow
Open Shapes and select a straight arrow or block arrow if your version provides one. Drag from the arrow’s tail toward its intended point, then release. The direction of your drag determines the arrow’s orientation.

Many Paint versions include several arrow styles, but Microsoft’s current public Paint page does not promise an identical arrow inventory for every build. If the required arrow is missing, draw a line and create a small triangular arrowhead with separate line or polygon shapes. This workaround will not behave as one editable object.
Set the outline and fill
Choose colors before drawing whenever possible. In classic Paint, Color 1 commonly controls the foreground or outline and Color 2 commonly controls the background or fill. Newer Paint versions may present these controls differently.
- For an outline around a photo or screenshot, use a bright, contrasting outline and choose a transparent or no-fill option if your build offers one.
- For a prominent directional marker, use a solid fill and a contrasting outline.
- If the shape covers important image details, use an outline rather than a solid fill.
Newer Windows 11 Paint releases may include layers and transparency features, but their availability depends on your Windows and Paint versions. Microsoft describes these newer capabilities in its Paint update announcement.

Resize, move, or constrain the shape
Immediately after you draw a shape, Paint may show a dotted selection boundary or handles. Before clicking elsewhere:
- Drag a side handle to change one dimension.
- Drag a corner handle to change both width and height.
- Drag inside the selected area to move the shape.
- Hold Shift while dragging to try to constrain proportions, producing a circle instead of an oval or a square instead of a rectangle. This behavior can vary slightly by build.
Click outside the selection when you are satisfied. Microsoft documents the same general shape-selection and proportion controls in its shape guidance, although Paint’s editing model is simpler than Office’s.
Undo or delete a shape
Press Ctrl+Z immediately if the arrow or shape is wrong. You can also use Paint’s Undo button. If the shape is still selected, pressing Delete may remove it, although this depends on the current selection state and Paint version.

Once you click away, traditional Paint generally commits the drawing to the image as pixels rather than keeping it as an independently editable vector object. If it is already committed, Undo is usually the cleanest fix. If Undo is no longer practical, select and cut the affected area carefully, repaint it, or restore a saved copy.

- Maximize the Paint window; a narrow window can hide controls.
- Expand or show the toolbar if it is collapsed.
- In older Paint, check the Home tab rather than looking for an Insert menu.
- Confirm that the app is Paint, not Snipping Tool, Paint 3D, Word, or PowerPoint.
- Update Paint through the Microsoft Store where applicable.
- Try Windows app repair only after the simpler steps. Resetting an app can affect its stored state.
Paint’s limitations and better alternatives
Paint is suitable for a quick arrow, box, circle, or basic photo annotation. It is not designed for Office-style shape objects, automatic connectors, grouping, or unlimited post-insertion editing.
- Snipping Tool: Better when you want to capture and annotate a screenshot immediately; see Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide.
- PowerPoint: Better for movable, aligned, grouped shapes, text inside shapes, and connectors.
- Word: Suitable when the annotation belongs inside a document.
- Visio: Better for structured flowcharts and technical diagrams.
Office applications use a separate Insert > Shapes workflow, and their connectors can remain attached to shapes. That feature should not be confused with Paint’s raster-based drawing model; Microsoft documents it for Office apps.

Quick fixes for common problems
The arrow points the wrong way
Undo it and drag from the tail toward the intended point. Rotate or flip controls may exist in some builds, but redrawing is usually faster.
The arrow is too thin
Increase the available line or shape size before drawing, choose a block arrow, make the arrow larger, or use a high-contrast color.

The shape has an unwanted fill
Choose a no-fill or transparent option before drawing if available. Otherwise, use an outline-based shape or undo and redraw it.

The shape cannot be edited
It has probably been committed to the bitmap. Press Ctrl+Z immediately, or restore a saved copy. For diagrams that require frequent rearranging, use PowerPoint or a dedicated graphics editor instead.

Can I add an arrow to a photo in Paint?
Yes. Open the photo, select an arrow from the Shapes gallery, and click-drag across the image.
How do I draw a perfect circle or square?

Why did my shape become permanent?
