How to Install Fonts for Microsoft Paint

Install a TrueType or OpenType font in Windows, or get one through Microsoft Store, then select it from Paint’s Text tool. If it does not appear, check Windows’ font list and remember that custom-font support varies by app.

Install the font in Windows, then open Paint, choose the Text tool, create a text box, and select the font from the toolbar. Windows 10 and Windows 11 support this workflow, but Microsoft cautions that not every app supports custom fonts, and Paint’s controls can vary by version.

Install the font in Windows first

Microsoft Paint does not have its own font installer. Windows makes installed fonts available to apps that support custom fonts; use Paint’s Text tool to choose a font for your text. See Microsoft’s font-management instructions for the Windows-level process.

Choose how to get and install a font

Route What to do Consider
Font file from a trusted source Extract the ZIP archive if needed, then right-click the .ttf or .otf file and choose Install. Choose Install for all users if it should be available to all accounts; Windows may request permission. Trust the source before installing.
Microsoft Store Go to Settings > Personalization > Fonts, choose Get more fonts in Microsoft Store, then choose a font and select Get or Buy. The font downloads and installs automatically. The font may be free or purchased.

How to install a font file for Paint in Windows 11 or Windows 10

  1. Get the font file from a source you trust. Windows font-management guidance covers TrueType (.ttf) and OpenType (.otf) files. Check the font’s license for any limits on your intended use.
  2. Extract the ZIP file. If the download is a ZIP archive, open File Explorer, right-click it, and choose Extract All. Open the extracted folder and locate the .ttf or .otf font file; do not try to install the ZIP itself.
  3. Install the font in Windows. Right-click the extracted font file and choose Install. Choose Install for all users if it should be available to all accounts. If Windows requests permission, proceed only if you trust the font source.
  4. Open Paint. If Paint was already open, close and reopen it before checking its font menu.

How to use the installed font in Paint

  1. Open an image or create a new image in Paint.
  2. Select the Text tool and create a text box on the canvas.
  3. Use the toolbar controls to choose the font and set options such as size and color.
  4. Type your text and check its appearance.

The exact position and appearance of Paint’s text controls can vary between versions. Microsoft’s Paint guidance describes choosing text options through the toolbar.

What to do if the font does not appear in Paint

Check Windows’ installed-font list

Open Settings > Personalization > Fonts and search the available-font list. Microsoft identifies this page for viewing and managing fonts. If the font is not listed, confirm that you installed the extracted font file, or use the Microsoft Store route.

Remember that app support varies

Microsoft cautions that not every app supports custom fonts. If Windows lists the font but Paint still does not offer it, the issue may be app support. Consider using an app that supports the font you need.

Using the font on another computer

A font installed on one computer is not necessarily installed on another. Microsoft’s Office-specific guidance says a custom font must be installed on the recipient’s computer to display as intended and may otherwise be replaced with a default font. This is general context; it does not describe Paint-specific font embedding behavior.
