To join two pieces of batting without a bulky ridge, make matching edges and stitch them together edge-to-edge. A practical way to do that is to overlap the pieces temporarily, cut a gentle curve through both layers, remove the offcuts, then join the newly matched edges with a herringbone hand stitch or a wide machine zigzag.
Choose batting pieces that suit the project
When possible, use pieces of the same weight, color, and type. AllPeopleQuilt recommends matching those characteristics in its batting-scraps tutorial. If the pieces differ in fiber, scrim, or bonded construction, the cited tutorials do not establish a universal compatibility rule; check the batting maker’s instructions before joining them.
Prepare matching edges
-
Lay the batting pieces flat and overlap their edges by several inches. This overlap is only for cutting; leaving it in place would stack the batting and create a thicker seam.

The cotton is fluffy and resistant to tearing, making it ideal for quilting projects.
- 【Washing Instructions】- Avoid pre-washing the batting before quilting. After finishing your quilt, wash it in a large washing machine with cold water and a small amount of liquid soap. Tumble dry on low heat and then place the quilt in the sun to dry thoroughly. Initially, the batting may appear thin and less soft due to compression packaging. You can quilt at this stage or pat the batting to restore its fluffy and soft appearance.
- 【Dimensions】- Our cotton batting is available in multiple sizes: 47×59 inches, 59x79 inches, 71x79 inches, and 79x91 inches. These large sizes are perfect for crafting quilts, pot holders, wearable art, and other projects.
- 【High-quality Cotton Batting for Quilts】- Our dense cotton pads do not require disassembly and can be washed after quilting. This ensures that your bedding products have evenly distributed cotton, providing superior comfort and durability.
- 【Ease of Use】 - Our cotton batting is designed for easy cutting and layering. The flat and even texture allows you to cut it to your desired size without worrying about uneven tearing or poor distribution.
-
Using a rotary cutter and quilting ruler, cut a gently curved line through both layers. Remove the offcuts. The two remaining edges should now match. This curved-cut approach is shown in Needlepointers’ tutorial.
-
Move the pieces so the matching edges meet without overlapping. Keep them flat and side by side as you stitch.

Choose a way to join the edges
Hand-sewn herringbone stitch
American Patchwork & Quilting recommends a herringbone stitch for joining batting edges. Work across the seam so the stitches catch both pieces while they remain abutted rather than stacked. See its step-by-step tutorial.
Wide machine zigzag
A wide zigzag can also catch both edges. Set the batting side by side under the presser foot and check that the stitch spans the seam without bunching the material. The tutorials provide differing examples rather than one mandatory machine setting, so test on offcuts first and adjust the width and length for your machine and batting. Needlepointers demonstrates this approach, and AllPeopleQuilt also covers joining scraps.

Fusible interfacing
Fusible interfacing is another option described by SewCanShe. Follow the directions for the specific interfacing product. For a long seam, fusing the full join with a single strip may be difficult, so consider the length before choosing this method.
