Slide the seam ripper beneath the thread—not through the fabric—and cut stitches with gentle pressure. For a seam joining two pieces, open a few stitches first, separate the fabric layers, then work along the seam. A basic seam ripper is enough; careful positioning matters more than a specialty tool.
What a seam ripper does
A seam ripper cuts unwanted thread so you can remove stitches, open a seam for alterations, or undo a sewing mistake. The point guides the thread into the cutting edge; it should not pierce the fabric. Janome describes these as the tool’s intended uses in its seam ripper overview.
How to use a seam ripper
- Set up the fabric. Work in good light and support the fabric on a stable surface. Locate the thread you want to cut.
- Slip the point under one stitch. Guide the point beneath the thread without catching or puncturing the fabric. If it will not slip under easily, adjust the angle rather than forcing it.
- Bring the stitch to the cutting edge. Move the thread into the ripper’s fork and against its blade. Use gentle pressure so the cutting edge does the work.
- Open joined fabric in stages. For a seam holding two pieces together, cut the first few stitches, gently separate the layers, then slide the tool beneath the remaining joining stitches. Seeing the space between the layers helps keep the tool away from the fabric.
- Continue and clear the thread. Work carefully along the seam. Pull away loose thread pieces before resewing so they do not tangle with the new stitches.
This method follows the basic guidance in iFixit’s seam-ripping guide and Lee Valley’s tool instructions.
How to avoid holes and snags
- Keep the fabric supported and the work area well lit so you can see the thread and the ripper’s point.
- Guide the point under a stitch; do not push it blindly between fabric layers or through the cloth.
- Use light pressure. If the thread is not cutting, reposition the stitch on the blade rather than forcing the tool.
- When opening a joined seam, separate the layers after removing a few stitches before continuing.
The tool is sharp: Lee Valley warns, “These are razor sharp tools.” Keep fingers clear of the cutting edge, store the tool capped or in its case, keep it away from children, and dispose of any used blades safely, following the maker’s instructions.

Choosing a tool for the job
A standard seam ripper is sufficient for ordinary stitch removal. Some tools have a fine pointed stitch picker for starting stitches, a seam-ripper blade for continued cutting, a protective cap, or an additional thread-removal end or awl. These are options, not requirements. Lee Valley describes a picker and ripper as distinct tools in its instructions; Prym’s Dritz Seam-Fix combines a seam ripper with an awl/stiletto and a rubber thread-erasing end. Choose based on the features you will use and the control and storage you prefer.

Long seams
For a long seam, Lee Valley suggests opening the first few stitches with a stitch picker, then using the seam ripper along the seam. This is an optional workflow; it is not necessary for ordinary stitch removal.
