Load a long-arm quilt by preparing the backing, batting, and top; attaching and rolling the backing without stretching it; aligning the layers; and securing them with the method your frame requires. The exact poles, leaders, attachment points, and order vary by machine, so use the procedure for your specific frame rather than treating any one sequence as universal.

Before loading: prepare and size the quilt layers

Square the backing and quilt top, trim ragged edges, keep opposing edges parallel, and press seams flat. Choose quilt batting that is smooth and appropriate for the project; do not stretch it as you place it.

Allowances differ by source and frame procedure. BERNINA’s Q Series Q20 manual, dated November 2020, recommends backing at least 10 cm (4 in) larger than the quilt top on every side, and batting at least 5 cm (2 in) larger on every side. Longarm University’s older general guide says both backing and batting should be 6–12 inches larger than the top, then later says batting should be at least 10 inches larger. These are instructional recommendations, not a single industry-wide standard: follow your frame manual and the needs of the quilting job. [BERNINA manual; Longarm University guide]

Load the backing, align the layers, and secure them

  1. Mark the centers. Find and mark the midpoint of the backing’s top and bottom edges. Marking the center of the leader or using its center reference gives you a starting point for alignment.
  2. Attach the backing to the appropriate leaders. Match the backing’s center marks to the leader centers, then pin or otherwise secure the fabric working from the center outward. BERNINA specifies the wrong side of the backing facing up at both leader attachments. Gammill also starts with the backing wrong side up, but its roller names and attachment steps are specific to its frame. Check your model’s instructions for the correct leaders, fabric orientation, and fasteners.
  3. Roll the backing and smooth it as you go. Work from the center toward both sides, smoothing wrinkles while rolling. Aim for fabric that is taut and flat, not stretched or distorted. Gammill advises aligning an uneven backing’s shortest edge with the leader rather than pulling the fabric to force it square. Adjust side clamps or other tension controls so they hold the fabric without distorting it.
  4. Place the batting. Lay it over the backing, smooth it, and avoid stretching it. BERNINA’s procedure places the batting’s top edge parallel to the backing.
  5. Align the quilt top. Match the top’s center or other frame reference to the backing and batting, checking that the top is straight before securing it. Gammill describes stitching a reference line through the batting and backing before aligning the top; whether that is appropriate depends on the frame and loading method.
  6. Baste or secure the layers as your frame requires. Gammill’s instructions baste the batting and then the top and sides. BERNINA calls for basting across the upper edge and both sides of a frame-loaded quilt to reduce shifting. Use the basting or fastening approach specified for your setup before quilting.

The procedures above reflect manufacturer guidance from the BERNINA Q Series Q20 manual and Gammill’s loading guide; their terminology and arrangements are not interchangeable.

Choose a top-loading method your frame supports

Some setups attach the quilt top to a leader; Gammill also documents a float method in which the top is laid over the batting without attaching it to a top leader, then basted at the edge and sides. A float method can change how the top is supported and secured, so it should not be assumed to work on every frame.

Method Top attached to a leader? What to check
Leader-attached top Yes Confirm the correct leader, attachment direction, and edge-basting procedure for your frame.
Float method documented by Gammill No Top is laid over batting and basted at the edge and sides; confirm your machine’s support, roller access, and securing method before using it.

This comparison describes options in Gammill’s guide; it is not evidence that every frame supports both approaches.

Check your frame’s specific loading instructions

Frames differ in leader arrangement, roller access, attachment hardware, and side-clamp setup, so verify the exact sequence for your model before loading. BERNINA’s Q Series manual and Gammill’s guide use different terminology and configurations. Handi Quilter’s HQ Moxie Getting Started Guide points owners to its Loft Frame loading demonstration at 12:58 and a side-clamp segment at 27:37. Use your own model’s manual or manufacturer demonstration for the attachment points and tension controls.
