The right way to make a background transparent in Illustrator depends on what the background actually is. Delete or hide a separate vector object, use Remove Background for a placed photo, use Image Trace for a simple white logo or scan, or set the PNG export background to Transparent when the artwork is already clean.
To check the result, choose View > Show Transparency Grid. The gray-and-white checkerboard shows transparent areas; it does not remove anything by itself. Before delivery, export the artwork and test it over a colored background.

“Transparent background” can mean several different things:
- Transparent artboard area: no filled object exists behind the artwork.
- Transparent artwork: part of an image or object has alpha transparency.
- Hidden or masked artwork: the background still exists but is not visible.
- White background: an opaque white rectangle or white pixels are still present.
- Transparent export: the chosen file format and export settings preserve transparency.
Start with View > Show Transparency Grid. If you see the checkerboard around the design, that area is transparent in the Illustrator document. A white shape can still sit above other transparent areas, however, so also inspect the Layers panel.

Remove a separate vector background
This is the cleanest method for a logo, illustration, or design whose background is a separate rectangle, shape, or layer.
- Open Window > Layers.
- Find the object or layer forming the background.
- Select it with the Selection tool, or target it directly in the Layers panel.
- Press Delete or Backspace to remove it. Alternatively, click its eye icon to hide it while keeping it editable.
- Choose View > Show Transparency Grid and inspect the area behind the artwork.
- Save the editable master as an AI file before exporting a delivery copy.
If clicking the white area selects the entire design, the background may be grouped, part of a compound path, or inside a clipping mask. Try the Direct Selection tool, enter isolation mode by double-clicking the group, or select the object through the Layers panel. For a clipping mask, use Object > Clipping Mask > Release, then access the mask and underlying artwork separately. A clipping mask hides content; it does not necessarily delete it. Adobe’s clipping-mask reference documents this behavior.

Current desktop Illustrator documentation includes Remove Background for selected placed images. Adobe’s documentation for the feature was updated on May 7, 2026, but menu locations and availability can vary by Illustrator release, operating system, localization, and edition.
- Choose File > Place and insert the image.
- Select the image.
- Choose Remove Background in the Contextual Task Bar.
- If the task bar is not visible, look for the command in Properties > Quick Actions, the Control panel, the context menu, or the Object menu.
- Inspect the result at 100% magnification or higher.
- Export the result as a PNG with a transparent background.
Duplicate the original image before applying the command if you may need to recover it. Automated removal can misinterpret fine hair, transparent objects, shadows, reflections, holes, and low-contrast edges. For a production-quality cutout, refine the result with a manually drawn path, clipping mask, opacity mask, or a raster editor such as Photoshop.

Remove a white background from a logo or scan with Image Trace
Image Trace is useful when a simple white-background logo, signature, icon, or line drawing needs to become scalable vector artwork. It does not simply erase white pixels. Illustrator analyzes the raster image and rebuilds it as vector paths, so the result may need substantial cleanup.
- Place the raster image with File > Place and select it.
- Open Window > Image Trace.
- Choose a suitable preset and preview the result.
- Enable Transparency where available so transparent areas are not traced as white.
- If the unwanted background is a specific color, use Ignore Color where supported.
- When the result is acceptable, choose Expand to convert it into editable paths.
- Ungroup if necessary, then delete leftover background shapes and small fragments.
- Inspect enclosed areas, such as the centers of letters and loops, before exporting.
Use Ignore Color cautiously. Ignoring white can also remove white details that belong in the logo. Image Trace can produce many paths, rough edges, unwanted white islands, or lost fine detail. Improve the source image and clean the expanded paths manually when accuracy matters. Adobe explains the relevant Image Trace Transparency and Ignore Color options.
Use a clipping mask for a controlled crop
A clipping mask is best when you want to hide everything outside a defined geometric shape, such as a circle, rectangle, product label, or prepared silhouette.

- Draw or select the vector shape that will define the visible area.
- Move it above the artwork with Object > Arrange > Bring to Front if needed.
- Select both the mask shape and the artwork.
- Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make.
The mask must be a vector object. The artwork underneath remains available, making this workflow reversible and useful for layout work. It is not an automatic way to isolate a person or irregular object from a photograph, and it does not necessarily remove the hidden pixels or paths from the file.
Use an opacity mask for soft or partial transparency
Use an opacity mask when the edge needs a feather, gradient, soft shadow, or partial transparency rather than a hard cutout.
- Open Window > Transparency.
- Create or select the artwork and the object that will control its visibility.
- Create an opacity mask from the Transparency panel.
- Edit the mask thumbnail to control the result.
In an opacity mask, white areas reveal the artwork, black areas hide it, and gray areas create intermediate transparency. Use Invert Mask when the result is reversed. Be careful with Clip: it confines visibility to the masking object’s shape and can make the artwork appear unexpectedly cropped. If mask thumbnails are not visible, use the panel’s options to show them. Adobe documents these controls in its Transparency panel guidance.
Export a transparent PNG
If the background has already been removed, export the artwork rather than a screenshot of the Illustrator workspace.

- Choose File > Export > Export As, or use File > Export for Screens when appropriate.
- Choose PNG.
- Enable Use Artboards if the file should match the artboard boundaries.
- In the PNG options, set Background Color to Transparent.
- Choose the required resolution and export.
- Place the PNG over a colored background to verify the alpha transparency.
PNG export offers Transparent, White, and Black background choices. Only Transparent preserves transparent pixels. A white rectangle in the artwork will still export as white, even when this option is selected. Conversely, a viewer that displays transparent pixels as white does not necessarily mean the file contains a white background.
Use Artboards controls the exported bounds; it does not trim transparent padding automatically. If the design has too much empty space, resize the artboard to the artwork when appropriate, or use the correct artboard during export. Adobe’s PNG export documentation covers these settings.

Keep the AI master whenever possible. Adobe identifies PDF 1.4 or later as the relevant threshold for retaining transparency without the older PDF 1.3 limitation. EPS should not be treated as universally safe for transparency because another application may read flattened EPS data. See Adobe’s transparency and flattening guidance.
Fix common transparency problems
The artboard looks transparent, but the PNG is white
- Show the transparency grid.
- Check the Layers panel for a white rectangle or background layer.
- Export again as PNG.
- Set Background Color to Transparent.
- Enable Use Artboards if the exported bounds are wrong.
- Test the PNG over a colored rectangle rather than trusting a white preview.
The checkerboard appears in the final image
Illustrator’s checkerboard is normally only a canvas display. It should not be exported with the artwork. If it appears in the file, you probably exported a screenshot or created actual checkerboard shapes.

Image Trace produces a white background
The source may contain actual white pixels, or transparency handling may not have been enabled. Try Transparency, use Ignore Color only when white details are not needed, then expand and delete residual background shapes.
Remove Background removed part of the subject
Restore the duplicated original and try a manual path, clipping mask, opacity mask, or raster-editor workflow. Fine hair, translucent materials, shadows, and similar-colored edges are common trouble spots for automated selection.

There is too much empty space around the result
Removing a background and cropping the output are separate tasks. Resize the artboard or use Use Artboards to control the exported dimensions.
Transparency disappeared in a PDF or EPS
Check the PDF version and the receiving application. Older formats and workflows that do not understand transparency may flatten it. Retain the AI master and use PDF 1.4 or later when live transparency is required.
When Illustrator is not the best tool
Illustrator is strongest when the final asset needs editable vector paths, scalable logos, SVG output, or integration into a vector layout. Photoshop or another raster editor is usually more controllable for pixel-level selections, hair, soft edges, shadows, and complex photographic backgrounds. For a one-off photo cutout, a full Illustrator subscription may also be excessive if you do not need vector editing.
For repeatable vector editing, transparent SVG and PNG exports, Image Trace, masks, and editable logo work, Illustrator remains the appropriate tool. Adobe’s current plan information is available at Adobe’s Illustrator plans page.
