Yes—but “replaced” needs qualification. Canva has consolidated Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer and Affinity Publisher into one free Affinity application. The new app combines raster photo editing, vector illustration and page layout through Pixel, Vector and Layout workspaces. The previous apps are no longer available for new purchases, but existing owners can still download their purchased V1 or V2 software.
For painters, illustrators and small studios, the change could mean a capable desktop tool for preparing references, editing scans, building portfolios and designing printed materials without a recurring subscription. It also introduces a Canva account requirement, a different interface and the need to test important files before moving production work.

The former Affinity suite consisted of three focused applications:

These are functional correspondences, not a promise that every old application behaves identically inside the new one. Canva describes the replacement as a reimagined single application with shared workspaces, customizable studios and integrated workflows. In practical terms, one document environment can now cover tasks such as editing a painting scan, creating vector graphics for a website, and laying out a catalogue or exhibition brochure.
Is the new Affinity really free?
Canva advertises the core Affinity application as free forever. Its announcement presents the main professional photo, vector and layout tools as available without a paid subscription.
That does not mean the software is completely account-free. The current download and activation flow uses a Canva account. Existing Canva users can sign in; new users can create a free Canva account.
It is also important to separate the free editor from Canva’s paid connected features. Canva premium subscribers receive Canva AI features inside Affinity, including Generative Fill, Expand & Edit and Remove Background. A Canva premium plan is therefore relevant if you want those AI tools or other Canva-connected capabilities—not necessarily if you only need the core Affinity editor. Check Canva’s current pricing page for plan details, since prices and availability can change.
The defensible claim is that the core Affinity app is currently advertised as free forever. It would be too broad to promise that every future feature, service or integration will always be free.

What happens to existing Affinity owners?
Affinity V1 and V2 are no longer available to purchase from the Affinity website or the relevant app stores. That is a change in sales and product direction, not necessarily an immediate loss of access.
According to Affinity’s support information, previous buyers can still download purchased applications through the Affinity Store account used for the purchase, or through the purchased-app areas of the Apple App Store or Microsoft Store.
If V2 is working reliably for your painting or publishing workflow, there is no urgent reason to uninstall it. Keep it available while you test the unified app, especially if you depend on templates, macros, plug-ins, fonts, colour profiles or a printer’s established PDF workflow.
What the new app includes
Canva lists the following capabilities for the unified application:
- Vector drawing and illustration
- Pixel-based photo editing
- RAW development
- Non-destructive adjustments
- Retouching and compositing
- Smart selections and live filters
- Batch processing
- Multi-page documents and page layout
- Master pages, text styles and advanced typography
- Customizable panels, studios and workspace arrangements
For painters, the Pixel workspace may be useful for cleaning scanned artwork, balancing colour, removing dust, preparing reference images and creating web-ready files. The Vector workspace can handle logos, diagrams, signatures, labels and exhibition graphics. The Layout workspace is aimed at catalogues, postcards, lookbooks and other multi-page documents.

Canva also says the app supports formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF and IDML, as well as export or transfer into Canva. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every file will round-trip perfectly between applications.
Compatibility: do not migrate blindly
File-format support is valuable, but it is not the same as perfect fidelity. Imported or exported work can differ in typography, transparency, blend modes, linked images, effects, colour profiles or layout.
Before moving an active archive or client workflow, use copies of representative files. Test more than a blank document:
- Keep the original files and the old V2 application untouched.
- Make duplicate copies of typical projects.
- Open files containing your usual fonts, linked or embedded images, masks, effects and adjustment layers.
- Check text reflow, symbols, assets, artboards and layer structure.
- For Publisher-style projects, verify master pages, bleeds, printer marks, image links and page numbers.
- Check document colour profiles and transparency settings.
- Export a proof PDF and inspect it before sending work to a printer.
- Only migrate production files after the test results meet your requirements.
For a painter, this matters particularly when a portfolio, exhibition catalogue or fine-art print contains carefully calibrated colour and extensive typography. Keep a high-quality original scan and a clearly labelled export copy rather than overwriting the source.
How to get the new app
The verified general flow is:
- Go to the official Affinity site.
- Choose the current Affinity download.
- Sign in with an existing Canva account or create a free one.
- Install the Mac or Windows application.
- Open a copy of an existing project and choose the relevant Vector, Pixel or Layout workspace.
- Check fonts, links, colour settings and export results before using it for production.
For previous V1 or V2 purchases, sign in to the Affinity Store account associated with the purchase, or use the Purchased section of the Apple or Microsoft store. Exact installation labels can change, so use the relevant account’s current download controls rather than relying on an old tutorial.

Platform availability
The latest official announcement available for this information confirms availability for Mac and Windows. It described the iPad version as “coming soon,” so iPad availability should be checked separately before making a purchase or migration decision. Platform support may change after publication.
What does the Canva account mean for privacy?
Canva says that users retain ownership of their creative work and that creative work used in Affinity is not used to train its AI features. Those are Canva’s stated policies and assurances, available in its announcement about the new Affinity.
Even so, account-linked software and Canva-connected services deserve separate consideration. Using the core editor, exporting a file to Canva, enabling AI features and collaborating through online services may involve different data-handling circumstances. Artists working with confidential client material, unreleased commissions or licensed reference content should review Canva’s current terms and privacy documentation before using cloud-connected or AI tools.

It may be a compelling alternative for people whose work centres on photo editing, illustration and page layout and who want to avoid a recurring subscription for those disciplines. Bringing the three Affinity areas together is especially attractive to independent artists and small studios that previously switched between separate applications.
It is not automatically a complete replacement for Adobe Creative Cloud. Before switching, compare the workflows you actually use:

- Photoshop plug-ins, actions and automation
- Illustrator-specific tools and client handoff requirements
- InDesign production features and print workflows
- Adobe Fonts, cloud libraries and established team systems
- Agency collaboration and native-file requirements
- Video, motion, animation and 3D tools
- Colour-management and prepress requirements
If a client requires native Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign files, or your studio depends on Adobe-only integrations, Adobe may remain the safer choice. Canva’s Creative Cloud overview is the appropriate place to check its current product scope.

No single alternative exactly duplicates the old three-app Affinity suite:

- Inkscape: a free, open-source vector tool that most directly covers the Designer role. See Inkscape.
- Scribus: a free, open-source desktop-publishing application for layout, rather than a complete photo and vector replacement. See Scribus.
- Pixelmator Pro: a Mac-focused paid photo and design option, but not a full replacement for all three disciplines. See Pixelmator Pro.
- Figma: strong for collaborative interface and web design, but not a direct replacement for desktop raster editing or print publishing. See Figma.
These tools should be judged by the specific work you do, not by feature-count comparisons. A painter who only edits scans may need a different solution from a studio producing vector branding and print catalogues.
Special case: schools and nonprofits
A separate support page discusses free access to the former Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher applications for eligible schools and nonprofits with valid Canva education or nonprofit accounts. This should not be read as evidence that the old apps remain generally available for sale; it is a separate eligibility programme.
Who should switch?
Try the new Affinity if you want one desktop app for painting scans, vector graphics and printed layouts; prefer a free core product; already understand the Affinity workflow; and are comfortable using a Canva account.
Stay with V2 for now if a current print or client workflow depends on known behaviour, or if your essential plug-ins, macros, templates and files have not been tested. Existing owners can continue downloading their purchased versions, so there is no need to make an immediate irreversible move.
