You can make a simple spinning top inspired by Beyblade using a plastic bottle cap, a pointed axle, and a balanced cardboard layer. This homemade craft is not an official Beyblade and is not automatically compatible with official launchers or stadiums. An adult should handle sharp tools, and play should stay at floor level.
Materials and safety
Gather a clean plastic bottle cap, cardboard or thick paper, a thumbtack or push pin, scissors, decorating paper, and tape or glue. Use an awl or another suitable pointed tool only with adult supervision. Keep faces away from the spinner, and stop using it if the axle loosens or pieces begin to come off.

Hasbro warns that “BEYBLADE tops may unexpectedly fly off surface and cause eye or facial injury.” Its instructions also say not to use tops or a Beystadium on tables or other elevated surfaces. Those warnings apply to official products; for a homemade top, floor-level play and a clear area around players are sensible precautions too. Hasbro’s instructions.
How to make the top in 8 steps
- Set up your work area. Put the materials on a stable surface. Have an adult do the piercing and any cutting that could be difficult to control.
- Choose and clean a cap. Select a round, undamaged plastic bottle cap. Wash and dry it so paper, tape, or glue can adhere.
- Mark the center. Use a ruler or careful visual check to find the center of the cap. An off-center axle can make the top wobble.
- Pierce the center. With an adult handling the tool, make a small hole at the mark using an awl, thumbtack, or push pin. Keep fingers clear of the point.
- Fit the axle. Push the pointed axle through the hole so its point projects below the cap. Check that the cap sits squarely around the axle rather than leaning to one side.
- Add a balanced body. Cut a circle or star from cardboard or thick paper and place it concentrically on the cap. Secure it with tape or glue, distributing material evenly around the center.
- Decorate and test-spin. Add lightweight paper decoration, then spin the top by hand. If it wobbles, reposition or trim the added material and test again. This adjustment is for balance; it does not establish a particular spin time or speed.
- Make a simple arena and play. Trace and cut a circle from cardboard to mark a basic play area, as shown in this craft tutorial. Keep the play area on the floor, keep faces back, and stop if the axle or any other part becomes loose.
How to make a homemade launcher
This cap-and-axle design does not specify a reliable launcher mechanism, and it may not fit an official Beyblade launcher. Start by spinning it by hand rather than forcing it into a launcher. Official Beyblade systems use a launcher and ripcord designed for their generation of tops; Hasbro’s instructions describe official components and assembly, including use of a Phillips screwdriver: Hasbro assembly and safety instructions.

If you want repeatable launches, use a launcher made for the same official Beyblade generation as the top. Compatibility varies by generation, so do not assume that a homemade cap top or an unrelated launcher will work together.
How to improve balance and durability
- Wobble: Recheck that the axle passes through the cap’s center and that the cardboard layer is centered. Move or trim added paper in small increments.
- Uneven spin: Keep decoration and tape distributed around the center instead of piling them on one side.
- Loose parts: Stop spinning if the axle, cap, or paper layer shifts. Re-secure the part before trying again, and discard the top if it is cracked or cannot be made secure.
- Comparing designs: Change one feature at a time, such as cap size or body diameter. Note what you observe about wobble, ease of launching, durability, and how long each top appears to spin; do not treat casual observations as measured performance data.
How it differs from an official Beyblade
Official Beyblade products are modular systems. Hasbro’s instructions identify components such as a blade base, weight disk, attack ring, bit chip or cover, launcher, and ripcord, and describe assembly with a Phillips screwdriver. Beyblade X guidance is for children ages 8 and older and says parts can be mixed and matched within that product system: Beyblade X parents’ guide. A homemade bottle-cap spinner has different construction and interfaces; do not present it as compatible with official launchers or stadiums.
