To make a box set for a favorite series, measure the complete collection, cut and assemble a fitted enclosure from sturdy board, then add printed artwork. For a display project, a simple cardboard build can work; for protecting valuable or fragile books and paper, choose conservation-suitable materials and an enclosure style matched to the items.

Choose the right kind of box set
First decide whether the goal is a decorative display or safer storage. The contents—their dimensions, weight, condition, and materials—determine both the construction and the fit.

The Canadian Conservation Institute describes storage as the first defense against deterioration from dissociation, water, and incorrect or fluctuating relative humidity. Its guidance is about books and paper objects; a decorative project for mixed media may need different construction choices.

Measure the collection before cutting
Gather the exact items that will go in the set and stack them in the order you want to store them. Measure the total height, width, and thickness. The Make: tutorial emphasizes fitting the box around the actual contents; allow for the board thickness so the completed enclosure is not too tight to load or remove items.
For an enclosure made specifically for a book or paper object, the Canadian Conservation Institute gives a more precise method: measure height, width, and depth in millimetres, then add 3 mm around all edges. Measure a book’s depth at both the spine and fore-edge and use the larger measurement. This sizing advice is for the Institute’s book and paper enclosures, not a universal allowance for every format.

Materials and tools
For a decorative build
- Thick, solid (not corrugated) cardboard; foamcore or thick card stock may suit smaller boxes.
- A sharp knife and a cutting surface; use a metal ruler to guide straight cuts.
- Tape for holding the structure together while checking fit.
- Sticker paper for the cover art, or photo paper and spray glue.
For a conservation-focused enclosure
- 2-ply or 4-ply acid-free matboard and sturdy acid-free paper, as appropriate for the enclosure.
- Gummed linen tape to secure corners and strengthen folds.
- PVAC adhesive or double-sided tape, as suitable for the construction.
- A metal ruler, sharp knife, cutting mat, and a tool for scoring fold lines.
Acidic paper and board can damage stored objects. The Institute also notes that cyanotypes and diazotypes call for acid-free, unbuffered enclosures, so the material choice should account for what is being stored rather than relying on an “archival” label alone.
Build a fitted decorative box
- Plan the panels. Use the measured contents to draw the side, top, bottom, and back panels. Include the thickness of the board in the dimensions so the assembled box has room for the set.
- Cut the board. Cut the panels with a sharp knife and straightedge on a suitable cutting surface. Work carefully; make multiple controlled passes rather than forcing a blade through thick board.
- Assemble and test the fit. Tape the sides to the back, then fold the structure into shape around the collection. Check that the contents fit before securing the outer corners and edges. Adjust the panels if the fit is too tight or loose.
- Measure the finished surfaces. Once the box is assembled, measure the areas that will receive artwork. Size the printed design slightly smaller than the surface and leave extra material at the edges for trimming and folding.
- Apply the artwork. Print on sticker paper, or use photo paper with spray glue. Position the art, smooth it onto the box, then trim and fold the extra margin around the edges.
Applying the cover art after assembly lets you size it to the actual finished surfaces, including any small changes caused by the board and folds.

Make a book or paper enclosure with conservation in mind
For a book in good condition, a slipcase can provide a close-fitting enclosure while keeping the spine visible. If the book is fragile or badly damaged, the Institute recommends a box rather than a slipcase. Because a slipcase does not prevent light damage, consider a more protective box style when light exposure is a concern.
For the Institute’s matboard method, measure the object as described above, score the board at the fold lines, and use gummed linen tape to secure corners and reinforce folds. Its detailed instructions and diagrams are in the Canadian Conservation Institute’s enclosure guide. Use the enclosure type and material suited to the object’s condition and composition.

Keep digital bundles separate from physical box sets
If “box set” means an eBook bundle published through Kindle Direct Publishing, Amazon’s boxed-and-bundles guidance applies specifically to eBook editions. It advises making clear in the title that the product contains multiple books, accurately representing the included books, and listing them in sequence in the table of contents. These are digital listing and navigation considerations, not instructions for making a physical box. Check Amazon KDP’s current boxed and bundles edition guidelines before publishing, since platform rules can change.
Use artwork you have the right to reproduce
A handmade set can use original cover art or other artwork you are entitled to reproduce. The fact that a tutorial demonstrates applying series-inspired cover art does not grant permission to copy a publisher’s cover, logo, or branding. Rights depend on what you use, how you use it, and the relevant jurisdiction; seek rights-specific advice if you plan to distribute or sell the finished set.
