You can find vintage Betsy McCall paper dolls in digitized magazine archives and in seller-prepared printable downloads. For a reliable printout, check the source and page dimensions, preview the file, and choose print scaling deliberately. A page’s age or presence in an archive does not automatically grant permission to reuse it.
What are Betsy McCall paper dolls?
Betsy McCall debuted in McCall’s magazine in May 1951 as a monthly paper-doll feature, according to The Strong National Museum of Play’s catalog record. The feature continued into the 1990s. The museum describes Betsy as a girl of seven or eight and notes that McCall’s licensed the American Character Doll Company to make a 7½-inch doll. Its catalogued printed-paper object “This Is Betsy McCall” is dated 1955.

The magazine itself has a longer history: the University of Pennsylvania’s Online Books Page record for McCall’s says publication began under that title in 1897, the magazine was renamed Rosie in 2001, and publication ended in 2002.
Where to find original pages or printable files
Look for original magazine pages in archives
Back issues and library-listed serial archives can help you locate original pages and identify the issue or date. The University of Pennsylvania’s serial record lists persistent issue archives, but coverage, access, and scan quality can vary; check the archive itself for the specific issue you want. If provenance matters, prefer a page that is clearly tied to a magazine issue rather than an unattributed image.

Consider seller-prepared digital downloads
Marketplace listings may offer files ready to print. For example, one Etsy listing for “Betsy McCall Visits the Plaza,” dated by the seller to 1972, describes a scanned original page with a story and printable doll-and-outfit files in JPG, PDF, and PNG formats. The seller says the files were scanned at 300 DPI and that no physical item will be mailed. These are listing claims, not independent confirmation of the scan’s source, completeness, or rights. Price and availability can change.
Before purchasing or downloading, check what the listing actually includes, the page or image dimensions, and the seller’s terms. A file described as a scan may be a seller-prepared reproduction rather than a download from the magazine publisher or an archive.

How to print a Betsy McCall page
- Check the file. Open the PDF or image and look for stated page dimensions. If dimensions are missing, use the print preview to see whether the doll and outfits fit the sheet as intended.
- Choose scaling deliberately. Use “Actual size” or 100% only when the file’s page dimensions match the intended print size. “Fit” or similar options can shrink or enlarge the image to suit the paper; check the preview so clothing tabs and cut lines are not cropped.
- Print a test page. Confirm the printed doll and outfits are a usable size before printing additional copies. A collector post from 2009 describes enlarging high-quality image pages to approximately original magazine size, but that is a starting tip, not proof that every scan has the same dimensions.
- Select paper that suits your project. Ordinary printer paper can be used; heavier printer paper is an optional choice if you want a sturdier cutout. The available sources do not prescribe a paper weight, printer model, or required setting.
Archive access, provenance, and reuse rights
Finding a page in a collection catalog does not establish that you may reproduce or sell it. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s Archives Center catalog record for Betsy McCall material states: “The Archives Center makes no guarantees concerning copyright restrictions.” It also notes that other intellectual property rights may apply. Check the terms and rights information for the particular image and source before sharing, reproducing, or using it commercially.
Likewise, a seller’s personal- or commercial-use terms describe that seller’s listing; they do not by themselves establish the seller’s authority over the underlying vintage material. The available records do not establish one universally official source for free downloadable pages or a single rights status for all pages and scans.
