Make a custom Operation-style game with a decorated board, removable pieces, tweezers, and a clear rule for what counts as a miss. You can build it as a quiet, no-electronics craft or add a buzzer and light for the familiar edge-touch penalty; the board and pieces should work smoothly before you spend time on the finish.
Plan the theme, board, and rules
Choose a character, creature, or object to serve as the “patient,” then name removable pieces to match the theme. A painted robot might have a loose bolt or a missing gear; a fantasy creature could have removable scales or a misplaced crystal. Keep each piece visually distinct so players can tell what they are trying to remove.

Sketch the patient and the locations of the cavities on paper first. Leave enough room around each opening for the tweezers to reach the piece without scraping the surrounding artwork. Decide how a turn ends and how players win before building: for a simple version, a clean extraction earns one point, while touching an edge ends that attempt. The classic Hasbro game uses cards to identify the ailment, rewards successful removals, and awards the win to the player with the most money; a custom game can use that card-and-reward idea or the simpler point rule.
Gather materials
Foam board is named in an Instructables summary of a DIY Operation-style project and is a practical lightweight starting point. That project summary also names wire, a buzzer, an LED, and basic electronic components, but it does not establish a complete bill of materials or a verified wiring plan.

- CLASSIC OPERATION GAMEPLAY: A favorite kids game for generations. With the Operation electronic game, kids get to play "the doctor" and perform "surgery" to make Cavity Sam better--or they get the buzzer
- SKILL AND COORDINATION: In this fun board game for kids, players use skill and coordination to remove all kinds of easy-grab wacky ailment pieces with the tweezers without hitting the sides of the cavities
- UNPREDICTABLE AND FUNNY GAME FOR KIDS: When a player hits the sides with the tweezers, kids can giggle as—buzzzzz.—the surprising buzzer goes off and Cavity Sam's red nose lights up
- COLLECT MOST MONEY TO WIN: Earn money for every successful removal of a Funatomy part that doesn't set off the buzzer. The player with the most money at the end of the game wins
- PLAY SOLO OR WITH FRIENDS: The Operation board game is an easy to learn family game for kids to play alone or a fun party game with friends
- Foam board for a prototype or board base
- Paper for the first layout and optional printed or hand-painted artwork
- Lightweight material for removable pieces
- Tweezers sized to suit the players and cavity openings
- Optional: wire, a buzzer, an LED, and appropriate basic electronic components for a contact-triggered warning
- Paint and suitable brushes or other decorating supplies
These are starting categories, not a complete shopping list. Choose materials that can be shaped cleanly and handled safely; the cited project summary does not specify exact dimensions, component values, or a complete circuit.
Make and test the cavities and pieces
- Draw the board layout. Transfer the patient and cavity positions to the board. Mark each opening clearly and check that the planned tweezers can reach every location.
- Cut a prototype opening and piece. Start with one cavity and a matching lightweight piece rather than cutting the whole board at once. The piece should sit flat and lift out without jamming.
- Check the fit with the actual tool. Try approaching and lifting the piece from different angles. If the tweezers cannot grip it, or the piece catches on the opening, adjust the piece or cavity before copying the design.
- Repeat for the other spaces. Give each removable piece a memorable name and, if useful, mark the corresponding cavity so the player can identify the target.
- Reinforce a flexible board. If the foam board bends during handling, add a backing or other reinforcement before decorating. Test that the board still lies flat and the pieces remain accessible.
Hasbro’s official product description identifies tweezers and removable ailments as core parts of the classic game. A Hasbro/Lucasfilm Star Wars edition manual also says its pieces should lie flat in their matching spaces and notes that excess molded plastic can be smoothed with an emery board or sandpaper. That is edition-specific guidance; for homemade pieces, the practical goal is simply a flat, clean fit with no snagging edges.

- OPERATION GAME WITH MODERN UPDATES: You’re—BZZZT!—basically a doctor! This edition of the easy to play Operation game combines what families love about the classic kids game with fresh features, such as all-in-1 storage and 2 ways to play
- PORTABLE GAME WITH CARRYING CASE & STORAGE: The gameboard (slightly larger than previous versions) folds up into a durable handled case, so kids can carry it like a doctor’s kit! For easy storage, a built-in drawer helps keep pieces from getting lost
- 2 WAYS TO PLAY: Now with 2 modes for endless play! Enjoy classic gameplay by following the cards’ instructions in Hospital mode—or omit the cards and race to beat the clock in Emergency mode. (Requires 3x 1.5V AA Alkaline Batteries. Not Included)
- FIRST-EVER SOUND EFFECTS & LIGHT-UP NOSE: Yow! Ah-choo! Burp. When kids touch the cavity’s sides in Emergency mode, Cavity Sam reacts with funny sounds. In Hospital mode, get the buzzer and his nose lights up
- CAVITY SAM GETS A MAKEOVER: Same lovable patient, adorable fresh look! Humorously reimagined with hilarious details, Cavity Sam also features updated cavities (like a squiggly shaped one!) for added challenge
Paint and decorate the board
- Finish the fit before painting. Confirm every piece can be removed and replaced while the board is unpainted. Paint or coatings around an opening can affect clearance, so leave room for the finished surface.
- Make the targets easy to read. Paint or label each cavity and give the corresponding piece a matching color, icon, or name. Keep the target markings distinct from the edge that triggers a miss.
- Keep openings and contact edges clear. Do not let paint bridge a cavity or interfere with the intended conductive edge if you are installing electronics. Let finishes dry before testing fit again.
- Add the character details last. Paint the surrounding illustration and decorative elements without obscuring cavity outlines or making the extraction path difficult to see.
Choose whether to add a buzzer and light
The familiar electronic mechanic is a warning when the extraction tool touches the conductive boundary around a cavity. Hasbro’s Star Wars edition manual describes contact with the metal sides around a piece activating light and sound. The Instructables project summary describes a DIY version using tweezers, a conductive cavity edge, a buzzer, and an LED. Neither reference establishes a complete homemade schematic or exact wiring specifications.
If you add electronics, treat the circuit as a separate prototype: verify the design and component suitability before building it into the finished board, and keep the game away from mains-powered wiring. Do not assume a particular battery type or circuit value from these references. The original US Hasbro product page lists two AA batteries, while the Star Wars edition manual specifies four AAA batteries; those are different products, not a general specification for a custom build.

- INSPIRED BY BLUEY ANIMATED TV SERIES: In this Operation Bluey Edition game, your little one can imagine helping Bluey’s dad, Bandit, feel better with Doctor Bluey and Nurse Bingo! Operate carefully or get the BZZT! (Requires 3x 1.5V AA Alkaline Batteries. Not Included)
- PORTABLE DOCTOR CASE WITH STORAGE: A built-in drawer neatly stores all pieces, and the board (slightly larger than previous versions) folds up into a handled “doctor’s kit”
- HEAR FROM BLUEY, BINGO, AND DAD: This fun kids game for 1+ players features music and funny phrases from favorite episodes in the voices of Bluey, Bingo, and Dad. Get the buzzer and Dad’s thermometer lights up
- BLUEY-THEMED GAMEBOARD: Humorously reimagined in the Bluey art style, the board features different shaped cavities (like a squiggly one!) for added challenge
- 12 FUNNY, BLUEY-RELATED AILMENTS: Draw cards with 12 silly ailments that Bluey fans might recognize from the show, such as a toy octopus, sticky gecko, and cactus
A no-electronics version can still work if a miss is unmistakable. For example, agree in advance that a referee calls a touch, or use a timer as the attempt limit. These are simple house-rule options rather than sourced build-tested designs.
Test the game before decorating is finished
- Each piece lies flat in its matching opening and can be removed without force.
- The tweezers can reach the piece without blocking the player’s view of the cavity edge.
- If fitted, the warning activates when the tool contacts the intended boundary and not during a clean extraction.
- Paint, labels, and reinforcement do not obstruct the openings or loosen the pieces.
- Players understand what ends a turn, what earns a point or reward, and when the game ends.
Test every cavity repeatedly and adjust the fit or layout wherever a piece jams or the warning behaves unpredictably. This is prototype advice, not a reported test result for a particular homemade design.

A touch against the edge ends that attempt; finish when all pieces are removed and the highest score wins. To echo Hasbro’s card-based version more closely, write one target on each card and have players draw before attempting the matching piece. Decide whether a miss loses the turn only or also cancels a reward, and use that same rule for everyone.
