You can keep an old book’s cover and replace its printed text block with blank journal pages—but this is a binding alteration, not a simple page swap. The idea is best suited to a low-value book with a sound cover that you are willing to change. If the volume is rare, fragile, historically interesting, or personally valuable, pause and consult a qualified book or paper conservator before altering it.

- Do not force the book open and flat. The Canadian Conservation Institute warns that forcing a book to lie flat can crack its spine and weaken pages. Its book-care guidance is especially relevant if the cover or spine is stiff or fragile.
- Do not apply craft glue or self-adhesive tape to a collection item. The Library of Congress advises against glue and self-adhesive tape on collection materials. If the book may have preservation value, do not use it as a craft experiment.
