Make a large infinity mirror from a wooden frame, a rear acrylic mirror, LED Christmas lights, and a clear acrylic front panel treated with one-way mirror film. The light bounces between the two reflective surfaces to create the tunnel-like effect. Make: designer Lila Becker labels this build “Easy” and estimates 1–2 days; that is the project’s estimate, not a measured average. Read the Make: project.
How the mirror is assembled
The mirror is a shallow rectangular box. LEDs sit around the inside edges, facing inward. The rear panel is reflective, while the clear front panel carries one-way mirror privacy film on its inside-facing surface. Light reflects repeatedly between the two panels, appearing to recede into the frame.
The source design makes a frame about 72 × 25-1/2 inches. It uses nominal 1×4 lumber, which the project notes measures 3/4 × 3-1/2 inches in actual dimensions.

- Two nominal 1×4 boards cut to 72 inches and two cut to 24 inches
- Matte black spray paint
- Acrylic mirror for the rear panel
- Clear acrylic sheet for the front panel
- One-way mirror privacy window film
- Wood screws
- LED Christmas lights
- Black tape or a black project box to hide excess lights outside the frame
Becker says electronically controlled Christmas lights are available year-round through online retailers and suggests choosing a color or lights that blink or change hues. The project does not identify a tested light model or establish current product listings or prices. For the film, Becker names Gila Privacy Control Mirror window film and advises following the film maker’s application instructions.
Tools
- Drill with a 3/16-inch bit and a countersink bit
- Staple gun and screwdriver
- Round file
- Jigsaw, chop saw, or handsaw
- Hobby knife
Build the frame and install the lights
- Make the rectangle. Cut two boards to 72 inches and two to 24 inches. Place the short boards inside the long boards and join the corners to form the frame. With 3-1/2-inch-wide boards, the outside dimensions are approximately 72 × 25-1/2 inches.
- Paint and notch the frame. Spray-paint it matte black. Use a round file to make a cord notch near one end of a short board so the light plug can exit.
- Attach the lights. Staple the light wire around the midpoint of the frame’s interior boards, with bulbs pointing toward the center. Route the plug through the notch. Keep the lights inside the frame and conceal any extra strand outside it with black tape or a black project box.
Prepare and attach the panels
- Drill the front panel. Drill 12 evenly spaced mounting holes in the clear acrylic sheet and countersink them. Apply the one-way mirror film to the countersunk side, working carefully to avoid bubbles and following the film manufacturer’s directions.
- Fit the rear mirror. Drill matching holes in the acrylic mirror and countersink them on the backing side. Screw it to the frame with its mirrored face pointing inward.
- Close the frame. Attach the filmed clear acrylic opposite the rear mirror, with its film facing into the frame.
Take care when drilling acrylic: support the sheet so it cannot shift, and use the project’s specified bit and countersinking approach. The source provides no quantified optical comparison of panel materials or film choices.

Choose how to display it
The project suggests hanging the mirror on a wall or door, or adding legs to make it a table. For a tabletop version, it specifies six legs with two standard brackets per leg; the brackets should be at least 8 inches long. Its beer-pong variation uses 23-1/2-inch legs for a 27-1/2-inch table height, and the completed design is about 6 × 2 feet. These are the source design’s dimensions, not a tested furniture load rating.

The project description says no electronics expertise is needed; the listed work is frame construction, light placement, and panel preparation and mounting.
