To make a leather dog collar, size its adjustment range to the dog’s measured neck, prepare a strap and matching hardware, attach the buckle and ring with a suitable fastening method, then finish and inspect the collar. The sources below offer different material suggestions rather than a single specification, and they do not establish a strength rating for any design.
Choose a from-scratch build or a prepared kit
| Route | What it involves | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared kit | Tandy Leather’s Dog Collar Kit includes pre-cut and pre-punched leather, hardware, and instructions. Its listing gives medium as 0.75 in × 18–21 in and large as 1 in × 22–25 in. Check the product listing for current options and directions. | It reduces cutting and punching work, but the kit’s sizing range and instructions must suit the dog’s measured neck. |
| From scratch | Source leather, buckle, ring, fasteners, and tools separately; cut and assemble the strap to the desired design. | It offers more control over material and dimensions, but requires suitable tools and leatherworking skills. |
Abbey England recommends bridle butt leather for collars. Weaver Leather Supply’s tutorial demonstrates a simple collar and lead using 7/8 oz leather; for a more heavy-duty collar for a larger dog, it suggests heavier leather or adding a liner. These are source-specific recommendations, not a universal thickness rule or tested load specification. Abbey England’s collar guide and Weaver Leather Supply’s tutorial describe their respective approaches.
Measure the dog and determine the adjustment range
Measure around the dog’s neck and use the pattern or kit directions to choose a finished collar range. The available project information identifies neck measurement as the basis for sizing but does not specify a clearance allowance, so do not assume a universal number of fingers or a particular gap. Check the actual product or pattern directions, then test the finished fit on the dog before relying on it.

Materials
- A leather strap suited to the design. Abbey England recommends bridle butt leather; Weaver’s 7/8 oz example is one tutorial choice, not a requirement for every collar.
- A buckle and ring that fit the strap. Abbey England lists a caveson buckle and cast saddle dees among its suggested components.
- A fastening method: rivets, Chicago screws, or stitching are options identified by Abbey England. Weaver recommends Chicago screws or tubular rivets for larger collars in its tutorial; that recommendation is not a comparative strength test.
Tools
Plan for a way to cut the strap, mark and punch holes, assemble the chosen fasteners, and finish the edges. Abbey England names a strap cutter and edge tool, and recommends sharp punches to help avoid frayed edges. Follow the instructions for the tools and hardware you use.

Make the collar
- Set the dimensions. Use the measured neck and the pattern or kit’s sizing directions to establish the collar’s adjustment range. Confirm the selected buckle and ring suit the strap width.
- Cut and prepare the strap. Cut the leather to the pattern dimensions with an appropriate cutter. Mark the buckle fold, adjustment holes, and positions for the ring and fasteners before punching.
- Punch clean holes. Use a sharp punch appropriate to the fastener and strap. Work carefully so the holes align with the buckle and fastening components.
- Attach the buckle and ring. Fold or assemble the strap as the pattern specifies, position the ring, and secure the layers with your chosen rivets, Chicago screws, or stitching. Follow the component and tool instructions; the cited tutorials do not provide a universal fastening strength rating.
- Finish and inspect. Smooth and finish the edges using an appropriate edge tool and method. Check that holes are clean, the buckle works, the ring is secure, and the finished collar adjusts as intended.
- Check the fit on the dog. Test the collar’s adjustment and placement before use. If you are uncertain about construction or safe handling, Abbey England advises appropriate training for the pet’s and handler’s safety.
What the available guidance can—and cannot—establish
Supplier guidance provides practical component and material ideas, but it does not show that one leather thickness, buckle, ring, or fastening method is appropriate for every dog. The cited sources also provide no controlled strength tests or detailed dog-specific fitting protocol. Treat the pattern or kit instructions and an on-dog fit check as essential, and do not infer a load rating from a tutorial’s construction example.
